When we discovered 4e was the watered down shallow crap it is, being more mature, we decided to give GURPS a try, and NEVER looked back In gurps you dont have classes or levels, only character points, atributes, skils, cost character points to purchase. You have Advantages to represent all sorts of natural aptitutes like combat reflexes and high pain treshhold (must have to warriors) and so many others. Social advantages are also avaible, and you can buy your wealth or status (or both) prior to character creation, make characters who arent focused on blowing stuff up. You also have disadvantages, that incentive players to roleplay in exchange of extra character points, things like code of honors, vows, obessions, addictions, curses, cripplings it all has a value, and the customization is endless. Combat is way better, theres good rules for hitting specific body parts, you have active defenses like parry dodge and block (and theres advantages and skills that can make them better). Crafting is way better. GURPS standard magic system is awesome, a mage will have to learn a ton of fire spells before he can cast a powerfull fireball, and etc... My personal advice, GO GURPS | ||

Also as a DM its much easier to prep 4E. It used to take me 4 hours to prep a session with 3.5E Pathfinder, now it only takes 1.5 hours with 4E. As far as cheap resources go, check out enworld. Its the TL of all editions of D&D. Also checkout drivethrurpg, you can get a TON of good cheap content there. Many pdfs are priced at around 2 or 3 bucks because theres no material cost. I've found pdfs to be superior to hardcopy books just for the search feature. | ||
