Hey everyone!

As of recently, I have been playing most of my games as Terran in sc2 and basically having to start my mechanics over completely, after transitioning from Zerg. But in other news, I have been searching for another fun and practical RTS to play that is semi-similar to Starcraft. After quite some time, I am now considering purchasing Warcraft III. However, I have a series of inquiries, since I am a complete chobo at the Warcraft RTS series..

If I do purchase WC3, should I choose Frozen Throne or Reign of Chaos (for multiplayer for each mainly)?

Does Warcraft 3 still have an active community?

I have a many many more questions regarding the game, but I want to keep it as short and sweet as possible for the thread readers

If you guys don't mind, can you respond with an answer to each question and whether you recommend WC3 or not? Also, if it is easy to transition to from Starcraft 2?

Thank you very much, hope to hear back from you guys!

Regards,
MASSivez

Warcraft 3 is really a completely different game. I mean, the basics are the same, but wc3 basically has no macro. Its all about using a few units and levelling your hero and stuff. Using spells and smart army combinations.
You know what you could try, is a game called starcraft broodwar. Its fairly easy to transition from sc2, has an active community and a really good pro scene. Afaik the wc3 pro scene is dead (evidence: grubby and moon playing sc2) so yeah.

I have broodwar but it seems kinda bleh after playing sc2 first ( please dont flame for saying that) lol. It sounds like WC3 has some subtle LoL qualities within.

The Frozen Throne is the expansion to Reign of Chaos (like how Brood War is the expansion to the original Starcraft). War3 is a good, but different game. If you're looking for a quality RTS to mess around with and have fun with, War3 is definitely a good choice.

WC3 is a completely different game. The way the game works isn't really similar at all besides the fact that you control multiple units and make units out of buildings. It's a fun game, but I wouldn't say it's really similar to BW or SC2 at all.

I would imagine there is still a very wide range of players who still play on ladder... from very bad to very good

How is what he said wrong? -.-

Warcraft 3 is a completely different game. The amount of macro in wc3 is really, really low. Army sizes are very small and it is a hero-centric game.

seriously. i played a fair bit of wc3 and tft when they came out. sure the overall basics are the same (make base, make unit, eliminate other player) but the entire concept of the game is different. in sc its all about pressing for an edge in eco or a good timing. in wc3 you literally micro every unit, shitloads of stuff has spells. its actually really hard to follow imo also it feels slow

I played wc3 for about 4-5 years so I imagine that I can answer your questions satisfactoraly.

1. Frozen Throne or Reign of Chaos?
You need RoC to play TFT, but RoC is EXTREMELY deadish, and very bland imo. TFT is what WC3 got known for, not RoC. I would definitely recommend TFT.

2. Does Warcraft 3 still have an active community?
Yes, while it has shrunk vastly, it still exists. Your best source for WC3 related stuff are the following sites:
wcreplays.com
replayers.com
gosugamers.net

The first one is probably more dense in useful information, but generally has a very bad mannered community (I say this because I have been on said site for like 4-5 years). The second is informative and a little better mannered, and they are more active. The third is the best for professional style information.

3. you recommend WC3 or not?
It depends what your looking for. I would never recommend WC3 for the community because it is just terrible (with some exceptions), and I mean it wholeheartedly. If your looking for a macro type game, then again no. WC3 macro is very light and non intensive, while it does have an interface that is a hybrid of SC2 and BW. If you are looking for a game that depends a BUTT-LOAD on micro, then yes without any doubt. You may think you see some cool micro in SC2 and BW, but wc3 micro is really intensive and extremely difficult to manage. WC3 really focuses on very small battles, with extreme detail.

4. Also, if it is easy to transition to from Starcraft 2?
Well yes and no. It is probably a little easier to transition from SC2 to WC3 than BW to WC3. It is a vastly different game that is centered on heroes and small scale fights. If you like microing very small battles in SC2, you might like WC3. But again, WC3 is not a macro game, so the transition will be rather rough. If you are a skilled SC2 player and have solid fundamentals, you can pick it up. The skill ceiling is rather high, not as high as BW's but rather high. It will take a lot of time before you can competently fight someone. It will be very difficult and aggravating, but it is worth it if you like the style of play.

The Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne singleplayer campaigns alone are worth the purchase price of the game.

The multiplayer is fun, but I always had more fun with the custom games.

wcreplays.com is the TeamLiquid of WC3 and you should probably start there. However, it's been over a year since I visited the site and I don't know how active it is anymore.

That's becuase LoL is a direct ripoff from DotA, which originated as a WC3 custom map.

You want to play TFT not just vanilla RoC

There is still a community, China still plays it heavily with many competitions and there are people playing it outside China as well.

By far the best replays site is http://war3.replays.net/

It is mainly in Chinese and can load slowly, but has the best content (or at least it did when I was playing Wc3 before SC2), it isn't too hard to work out how to download replays without any knowledge of chinese. It also allows you to download the maps too (Wc3 requires you to have the maps downloaded manually, unlike SC2).

Lots of the community has changed over to SC2, but there is still quite a few active players, with a reasonable skill base across the ladder (Obviously no where near as good as ICCUP, but nothing can really match that) as the game has been out for quite a while now.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask here or PM. I have had a lot of experience with WC3 and can competently share about its ins and outs.

Yes but we hardly play WC3 ^_^

If you guys don't mind, can you respond with an answer to each question and whether you recommend WC3 or not? Also, if it is easy to transition to from Starcraft 2?

If you want to try it out, go ahead and do so. However, you'll find out that it is much different than Brood War and SC2. Is it easy to transition into to SC2 from WC3? Not really and also not sure if coming from WC3 had any particular advantages other than micro battles. Grubby for example would micro his units very well but would just forget to make anything in the mist of all that and bank over 1000 minerals and gas. Also, he would just not upgrade his units throughout the whole game.
