watching videos and interviews of pro-gamers Foreign and Korean, i can see from there mannerisms about 80% of pro gamers are introverts (imo), of course tasteless being in the other 20%. I have many introvert qualities myself. what do you guys think? is it they become introverts because they have to play alot or are they already introverts who enjoy playing alot? is there some kind of a connection here?

The fact that you spend most of the time on the computer, and you barely see people on real life has a big role in people being introvert.

Korean culture is just like that as are most Asian countries.
I always try to give a sensitive, reasoned answer. This is usually awkward, time consuming and pointless.

cpl use to say work hard, play hard. Many countries that are considered lazy is also very social but then again, not very good at starcraft.

I'm pretty sure its mostly a Korean cultural thing. Since starcraft is more legitimate there a lot of korean pros aren't just nerds and geeks.

Tasteless is pretty introverted. Not sure I follow how he's supposed to be an extrovert.

Is it because you think he looks dumb?

I think they are naturally introverts and that is why they turn into gaming instead of doing the more extroverts' activities ( clubbing/teamsports/going out ).

As for me, I guess I am mostly introverted but I certainly enjoy team sports and I am generally athletic, compared to my gamer friends at the least. I play soccer and football competitively and do team outings and stuff. That and going out with my girlfriend are basically the only social activities I do with people that don't play video games. In fact, if I spend too much time with people I get mostly irritated and angry, and I just want to be alone for a bit. So I'd say I'm introverted because I am most comfortable with myself or only a few people, but I can entertain some extroverted behavior like doing team sports.

I'm pretty sure that's your common gamer here on TL. I guess the better they become the more introverted they become by necessity.

Most top players have big personalities, and they have to in order to be at the highest levels. Mental intimidation is a big role, and personalities score sponsorship.

I'd say the most shy of them all are the B-list Koreans. Most are super nervous whenever they're in a televised match or whatever.

celebrity status tends to change people. As strange as it seems, people who are sure of themselves being introvers often transform into exrtoverts, as they get reinforced by their success and become more and more open

e-related stuff doesn't count. and yeah most PC gamers are introverts. Since strategy gaming is (relatively) niche, it's even more likely the players are introverts.

I ain't sure about 80% though. Think 65-75% is more accurate.

No... Just no. Introversion is probably one of the most misunderstood things in the world.
Let's say that people have their batteries that they need to recharge every once in a while. Extroverts get their batteries recharged by being around people, while introverts batteries get drained by being around people and social interaction, so we get our batteries recharged by being in solitude by ourselves.
I'm an extremely introverted man and I can be alone without seeing anyone for weeks, yet I'm far from being a shy or socially awkward person. I get along with people well and I have no problems talking to strangers etc, but I really need some time alone especially after a few days of not having time on my own at all.
But please, never presume that being an introvert equals to being shy.

They mistake a difference in culture for being introverted - Koreans (and asians in general) have a much more formal culture where respect to elders is much more important than in western culture, which can come off as being introverted (when in fact, it is being respectful/proper).

Lol. I don't think he understood the meanings of the words. Anyone would say Tasteless appears to be an extrovert from his casting style/ stories.

I would tend to agree that most are probably introverted more than your average person, but of course there are exceptions.

The best gamers are dedicated professionals in an extremely competitive field. It's no surprise they may be less social than say, your average college guy whose biggest concern in the world is his exams.

o_o Does online interaction play no role in this decision?

They're practicing alongside other people either in-person and/or online with their team.
Pro-Gaming houses are consistently being made, furthering socialization.

How are they introverted?

Not necessarily true. Introverts would rather spend their time by themselves than with others. Extroverts would rather spend their time with others. There is also omniverted for those who don't have a preference over either. Just because you are introverted it doesn't necessarily mean you are shy. You can still have good social skills and be introverted.

Eh....to be fair...sitting at a comp staring at a screen isn't exactly the most extroverted thing to do. You can argue it all you want that gamers socialize online but deep down you know that hardly counts as real socialization. I know it's less socially acceptable to be introverted but questioning how gaming is introverted at all is a little unnecessarily defensive.

I would say that most gamers are indeed introverts (but it doesn't necessarily mean that have to be shy...though many are). It's not necessarily bad though, it's normal to be introverted just as it's normal to be extroverted.

Well I've had a lot of experience of working with the Korean pros on shoots. By and large most of them were really shy and kind of awkward. However, this was mainly due to me being a woman, kind of forceful, and dealing with the language barrier. There were some pretty confident boys with wicked senses of humor amongst all the others.

My favorite example of a Korean pro being too shy (possibly too worried I'd shout at him? LOL) to speak up was when I did a shoot with ZerO only to realize half way through that where I'd placed him a pipe was dripping water onto his head. He just stood there without complaining until I noticed and got him to move.

The non-SC pros were generally a lot more out-going at live events. Especially the DF players. I miss those guys so much. They were fun, very friendly and made me feel so welcomed from the first time I photographed a live.

I bolded the main part of your argument and then the rest you're trying to wiggle through.
I don't think introversion is less socially acceptable either.

I'm really confused where you are pulling all these false ideas.
Deep down, I consider online interaction a significant of socialization.

I'd say so. The majority seem to be though there are a few extroverts just like in any other profession. Personality is not really a limiting factor.

lol isnt most of socialization non-verbal? online socializing is nothing comparable to real life. its why you have parties in person, and not over irc chat. theres a competent of social interaction (arguably the most important part) that you can't get over the internet.

Really?

I don't think being introverted is bad at all, but you can't deny that it's less socially acceptable. It's a fact, since being extroverted basically means to be more social.

It's also not a false idea that interacting online isn't the same as socialising in real life. While friendships and the like can form online, it still lacks the basic forms of interaction such as body language and skinship.

If your argument were to be applied in real life, then introverts would still be introverted at home. What tends to happen is that introverts (and shy people) like socialising online because of the many barriers that are put up between said person and everyone else.

western society is 99% based on extroversion. introversion is not socially acceptable. but in other parts of the world, i couldn't comment.

Good post, and is actually how I feel too.

it sickens me that introversion is seen as a negative trait(especially in men) just because of western culture... but it is what it is

Hmm, I can someone like boxer not having any problems with socializing since he pretty much help build the sport. I guess most of the younger guys who've only focused on gaming could feel a little awkward.

Of course personalities are different and of course you can get the occasional MC or FBH in the group. If you're looking for ther AVERAGE pro-gamer, it'd be hard to actually put a finger on it.

Progaming requires you to spend copious amounts of time (10+ hours a day) playing video games by yourself on a computer. While you may have teammates, to maintain your skill level you will pretty much have to continuously game throughout the entire day with little to no social interaction. And plus, to reach the progaming level in the first place requires thousands of hours of playing at home by yourself before you even have a chance to crack the top level. Obviously there are exceptions, but I find it no surprise that the majority of progamers are introverted.

I also want to clarify that this is not an argument over whether online interaction is socialization. It may very well be, but progamers aren't exactly chatting and socializing on IRC all day. For most of their waking hours, they play their game, where the extent of socialization is "GLHF" and "GG." Progamers do not have the luxury to waste time, because the competition is so ridiculously fierce at the top level.

not entirely sure about this one...

korean gamers (including progamers) are still massive nerds and geeks in korean society's eyes. it's very off-putting to hear about someone and is still viewed negatively. your average person on the street will probably know who lim yo hwan is but have zero idea who any other progamers are. i think it's more of an underground scene...

anyways, i'd imagine that the percentage of introverts among gamers/pro-gamers is more like 90 to 95%
