mlg tourney design, one big "extended series" ?

Extended series is stupid, the reward for winning the first game is you keep your "lifeline" and have to play less games by staying in the winners bracket. but thats not what im here to talk about, im here to rage at all the OTHER stupid rules mlg has thought up over the years. All stream issues aside, my main concern about how mlg runs the tournament is the bracket design itself. theres a few key areas that seem more than a little dumb to me. this post rapidly turned into a wall of text so ive hidden each section into a spoiler to save your eyes from pain. im aware my writing is going to feel like a ramble to read but im doing my best at 5am

firstly, its hard to actually "lose" once you make it to the top once. what i mean by this is that players seeded into the top 16 are given a free ride to the finals. as far as i can work out, even coming last in your group is a top 32 finish, meaning with just 1 or 2 wins total, against weaker opponents than you faced in your group, you can once again be seeded direct to pool play next time.

now to me having an overall score of 2-4 just isn't good enough to justify top 16, when there are players eliminated from the whole thing on scores of 10-2 or better.

just look over to the GSL, code A has been lumped with praise at the rapid improvement in the player base. why? because its so damn hard to compete there. the bottom finishers have to re-qualify for the whole GSL all over again from "code B". where as the cosy code s is criticized for its lack of new blood, and relatively bad players are able to stay in code s because no matter how bad they do, they then get TWO chances in the up and down matches to stay up. mlg is using a similar system that rewards has beens by taking longer to punish them for falling behind the pack, only needing a few wins or maybe even just 1 to stay near the top.

Secondly, and a little similarly, the bracket design doesnt reward skill. when the logic behind defending players with poor results is based on consistency being so hard to achieve in sc2, why are people consistently beating a variation of weak (likely all in/cheese) and strong (long macro games or crisp timings) being thrown out in to the cold of the open bracket next time?

Another problem i have with the whole design is that its needlessly complicated and rushed. the bracket is designed to stop the big names falling out early, which leads to this stupid layout that people struggle to understand. The point isnt even whether you understand it, the point is that its just another hurdle stopping people enjoying the game as a spectator sport. Pool play could be eliminated all together and just have a few qualifiers enter in to a final bracket along with the top 16/32. this is how it functions in sports like tennis and snooker except they hold the qualifiers before the cameras show up.

mlg should consider playing out the event over the whole week, now im all for more content but the fact is i think everyone would prefer there to be time for a best of 7 for every top end game, rather than a best of 3 for top end players, and low end players alike. this combination of being limited on time at the weekend event and wanting to let the best players play a longer series (more entertainment, the better play is more likely to win, more mind games/strategy) means that they should be hosting the "open bracket" the weekend before, purely online. have an admin spectate the game to check for cheating and make the replay available shortly after.

Another advantage of this layout is that it allows hype to build up for a whole week around the tournement. for their current setup mlg cant release any bracket info until the day it all happens, incase people dont show up. now with only the final 32 remaining being decided partly over the whole week before, it gives you time to build hype, release informantion, get interviews and weed out people who you couldnt be sure would actually show up to a lan.



tl;dr. the week(end) before the MLG the open bracket is played out online, with the top 4/8/16 from that qualifying for MLG proper. these would join the top 28/24/16 seeds at the live event. they would be put into a standard bracket, 32nd plays 1st etc, and play full BO7/9's all weekend. the stupid tournament layout is removed, people who suck have a real chance of being eliminated, people get to see idra rage quit more, and maybe with some of the money mlg can save from not having to get 76s pcs for people to use they can pay for the plane ticket to get the qualifiers to the event

Seeded players are guaranteed 24th. Placing highly in this even will let you stay at the top for a while no matter how you play in the next events because you will earn points every event and it will be hard for open players to place highly enough to overcome that build up of points.

At least Code S is getting 7 new players next month the bad players will be gone soon. Even the champion isn't safe from falling in the next event.

i think their intention was to confuse us so much by the format that we wouldn't even notice the extended series...

i saw the pic explaining the format but as the event is happening, i can't tell shit on whats going on and who's ahead. might just be because we had a 10 hour downtime.. =/
I only make 5 actions per minute. But since I use all my time deliberating and planning, my 5 actions are so brutally devastating that children cry out and grown men weep.

Totally agree with everything you said. I personally feel it should all be pool play and the winners of pool play get put into a bracket. Further more I felt like they could have benefited from several of the smaller stages as I spent most of my time watching games in the loser bracket or the open bracket.

Extended series makes sense especially if strategies used in the first serious could not be repeated as easily with the opponent already knowing what to expect. Also I would not be happy knowing that I was 3-2 against someone but they were still able to continue in the tournament but I wasn't.

i really prefer the GSL setup, i understood it from day 1 and even when they added code A etc. With the way MLG works if i watch someone lose a series i dont know if they are out of the tourny or still in

I've given up on completely understanding the brackets. I just watch the game and wait for the results here on TL.

Extended series IS stupid, I completely agree...why bother with brackets at all with that logic, just make all the players play each other like a huge group then...

The logic is astounding, and I am dissapointed to see players fight through the losers bracket just to be disadvantaged because they have played the person who won at some point in the earlier brackets...

By the same logic, you should start down a game vs. ANYONE who has EVER taken a game off ANYONE who has taken a game off you...no? It's dumb.
