Ok so I skipped practice league today and decided to just do the placement matches.
I did a Protoss 4 gate for both matches that I played and won both. The first one was pretty quick and painless since the guy pretty much turtled in his base and my proxy pilon just kept warping stalkers and zealots in.
The second match was a bit more challenging. I did a 4gate and proxy pylon but he pushed marines out early game and killed it. Also i must say it was wierd to see that he walled off against me and I was a Toss. Usually only see that with ZvT but this was TvP. I eventually got a good bit of stalkers to clear his marines out then put another proxy pylon down. After that i basically kept him in his base by either killing what he pushed out with or pushing into his base a bit to wreck havok on his economy. And I basically did that until he ran out of minerals in his 1 base and he left. He said during the game that I didnt play fair seeing as I was denying him access to the outside of his base and kept killing anything that came out.
Overall I have had a good start to my laddering shenanigans. 2 wins 0 losses so far. I must say even though I dont have my 4 gate refined alot it seemed to be enough to pull out the win for these two games.
I happy to say that Im glad to be a protoss. Very simple and easy build to start with and i enjoyed playing it.
Thanks guys for the encouragement and support that you have shown since ive joined Team Liquid.
Cant wait to progress more. Only 3 more placement matches and i get put into a league.

gl in your remaining placement matches.

Good luck on your next placement matches! Seriously, don't be put off by using the 4 gate. It's a tried and true build that everyone uses and even though there's some distaste in it, it's newb friendly.
|
I dont mean this to be a brag blog. I was just celebrating my wins and wanted to share it with Team Liquid.
|
Good luck for your remaining placement. Masters for me now feels so hard...........lol

Oh hello Marksman. Good to see you again. I got motivated and did it. And it turned out to be fun and a cool experience. :D

your blog brings out conflicted feelings in me.
I hate those who use 4 gate with a passion, as one who had lost countless times to 4 gate with 3 gate robo; It takes absolutely no skill to win with such a build.
However, it is also cool to see new ppl getting into starcraft 2. Many people i know are afraid to cross over to laddering and just play custom games. It takes courage to do so.

I can understand your feelings about hating it Icy. I feel that it does take some skill because if you dont micro then your units can easily be killed by a good counter unit and micro. And I also understand how you hate it since the build is designed to put early early pressure on your opponent while being able to transition if the pushes dont work. Its a very good build but if you exploit the weaknesses in the build then you can quickly gain the upper hand on the toss in both tech and economy wise.
Its a noob friendly build and thats why I focused on this build to learn first.
However, I have seen a video of a good way to counter the 4 gate build but I dont remember specifics of it. You could try looking it up to arm yourself with a good counter to the 4gate.

Haha, I'm the same way. I just bought the game at the behest of a friend of mine (and lurking here on tl for about a month) about a week and a half ago, and I'm putzing around in the bronze league (I started gold, then tried to play zerg, dropped me SOOOO hard >.<). I wish I could see my losses, though, and I could for about two days, but I understand that Blizzard patched that out.... Still, having fun and making progress.
|
I highly suggest you start practicing with builds that are not all-in from now on. Yes, you might win with a 4gate, but what is a single win to improvement overall? Maybe you are the kind of guy that says "Okay, I'm in Bronze League and I'm totally okay with that," but if you are any other kind of guy you will find the 4gate a little unreliable.
Not to say I wasn't any different. When StarCraft II first came out in the beta, the 3rax and 4gate were considered standard play so everybody did those builds.
And the counter to 4gate is just micro and macro. If you are decent at both, then you will be able to win out against a 4gate.

You are currently in for a great opportunity. Seasons are locked, 1 day remains in ladder. Get someone good to play your remaining 3 placement matches and get into Diamond. If there are no divisions open you can get into a new division and get wings with a star. Your MMR from 5 games is unstable so after you lose a few you play nubs again but you get a friggin diamond with wings and a star!!!!
+ Show Spoiler +gl in remaining placement matches ^^

Good luck. I bombed all of my placement matches except for the one where the person disconnected.

It's very hard for a video to teach you how to defend against a 4 gate. There's too many variations of it and too many factors depending on the match up, map and even the players.
Also I found it cute that you said ''it takes skill because if you don't micro, you will get killed by someone who does.''
But I suppose that's what makes the term ''skill'' relative.
And out of curiosity, what are the weaknesses that you mentioned from a Zerg perspective that one should look for when facing a 4-gate Protoss?
|
Well Idk really much about playing zerg but im guessing that you could send out a scout to scout the protoss base and see what he is doing. If you see gas, cybernetics core, and a warp gate then he is probably going for a 4gate.
The only thing I think that you could really do would be to find a unit that counters stalkers, zealots and sentries and go from there. If you defend against the first few pushes of the 4gate then you have a tech advantage over him. But you will want to be careful. 4 gate can easily transition into 10 or 12 or how ever many that toss wants gate xD. And at that point your in trouble if he has a good mix of units in his army.

A win is a win.
Good luck with the next matches!
