Welcome to my Blog and post number one. I have never blogged before, but I figured TL was as good a place to start as anywhere. Kinda doing this out of boredom, of which I have plenty because it's the wee hours of the morning. I am an insomniac, and I am addicted to coffee. Note, these two problems don't actually have anything to do with eachother. I just enjoy coffee, and I'm pretty sure my body conquered the stimulant aspect of caffeine a long time ago.
Recently, my friend randomly sent me a game over Steam called Rift. I'm not much for MMORPG's these days, but I'm told Rift only recently went live, and I kind of like the launch phases of MMO's for a couple of reasons.
1. People are everywhere, and it seems alot more social. 2. There are cool events to celebrate the launch phase 3. GM's are too busy fixing buggy things to deal with me being a prick.
It's not that I'm a prick on purpose, but I really take issue with obnoxious little WoW nerds getting their grimey little hands everywhere, making everything sticky and gross.
Why do people deign to use WoW as a benchmark for MMO's? I understand it was hugely successful because the developers made it entirely too accessible for it's own good, but the game itself was one of the most generic MMO's of all time. There is nothing that sets it apart from other MMO's anymore.
One of the big reasons I decided to give Rift a chance was the random invasions. I like the concept of NPC armies taking over towns and zones, and setting up ambushes along the road.
I also kind of like how the talent system works. You have 4 root classes (Cleric, Mage, Warrior, Rogue) and each one has like 8 sub-specs, or "souls". I have a Rogue, with the Assassin, Ranger, and Marksman souls.
I also STRONGLY like how they have dye merchants. Every game should have these. Custom colored armor is boss.
What do you guys think? What kind of stuff makes or breaks an MMO? Why is WoW so successful? What is Artosis going to announce on monday?!
Edit: Meme removed, let's all be friends

Memes, even TL ones, are annoying. Don't 1a2a3a your way to posting over 9000 memes -- we will ban you. There are plenty of places to go if you want to see posters of people failing at things or a humorous caption appended to a photograph of a cat. TeamLiquid is not one of those places.
might want to remove that meme

I think WoW is so popular because it's easy to get recognition for doing something, and because you feel like you're always progressing.
Also a lot of other factors aswell, the world is much better than that of any other MMO. There are more things to do. It's also very accessible, easy to understand unlike some other MMOs.
I think WoW was a great game, definitely would make my top 5 of best games of all time. I say "was" because i havent played it in a few years, to me it just sort of lost the charm it had earlier. I think that some of the hate WoW gets it only gets because it's so popular, so alot of people will act elitist towards it because they feel it's too mainstream or whatever.
Havent tried Rift though, might give it a try.

People use WoW as a benchmark because it was the most successful MMO by a huge margin.
Kinda like how people use SC as a benchmark.
WoW was a pretty damn good game at one point.

Krazy was still right. This guy is pretty far from spamming memes all over TL, so why don't you let a mod deal with it if they find it inappropriate.
OT: I think as was said before WoW is just such a hugely successful game that people use it as the standard for MMO's which is also why so many of them are similar to it.

there is a difference between telling one the rules and backseat moderating.

I like how this blog got derailed so fast I think chaokel did a right thing, he just told the no meme rules so OP doesn't get warned/temp banned. How can that be backseat moderating? That's being nice.
On topic: WoW used as a benchmark because it's perhaps the most successful MMO, and at one point, really really good MMO. It's like how you benchmark RTS with BW.

You must be referring to the very same difference between telling people how to drive, and backseat driving
In other news, the picture in question has been removed, let's move on

wow was successful because unlike its predecessor mmos it had good game-play, and more importantly much of the content was designed for casuals

Im confused, what was the meme?
And at OP, dude Ive been playing Rift as well. And the "invasions" where a ton of rifts open up is so fun.

Rift does seem pretty good, and i have no idea what you are talking about with WoW.....
WoW isn't the generic MMO... most of the others are.... they copied what WoW did well. WoW is by far the most succesful MMO, look at all the big MMO's goin free to play, LotR, Champions Online, D&D..... they can't compete with WoW based on solely subscriptions, because they don't do what WoW does as well as WoW does it.
I have tried a tonne of MMO's and they simply don't have the same PvP or PvE experience, they aren't easy to pick up and the progression is slow. No other MMO has been able to replicate raiding or dungeons with the same level of detail and variety that blizz has, WoW has gotten stale but its still going very strong..... i doubt rift will still be here in 5 years and it probably won't be on its 3rd major expansion. No other MMO gets major content updates every 3-4 months, and although WoW sucks now imo, its still way better than any other one I've played.
I will be giving rift a try, but if its like any of the other MMO's i've played...... its just not gonna match up to how good WoW was before it ruined. Roll on TITAN..... thats my only hope for a good MMO to come

I like your post Emy, because you're right on alot of points. I foresee Rift going the same way as Aion, which was another MMO I tried after I quit WoW.
I disagree on your points about having engaging PvP though. The pinnacle of PvP falls to games such as Dark Age of Camelot, or Planetside. Conquerable castles, sieges, putting the good PvE stuff in the middle of a PvP warzone. Things like that create engaging worlds that kind of force the two factions to fight on a regular basis. I really feel like WoW failed in that. Halaa was cool, but only on the day that it came out. Wintergrasp and Tol Barad are like the inbred offspring of world PvP and instanced PvP... Maybe it's just me, but it just seems like Blizzard was far too concerned with balancing PvP to a fault. The beauty of world PvP is that it can happen anywhere, any time, without warning. You could be horribly outnumbered, or you could be the one ambushing people running by on the road. You never knew! Instanced PvP just kinda sucks the reality out of it..

Ive played Rift to max level and Ive quit already. I was an arenaer in WoW and I quit because I just didnt like how things were getting buffed/nerfed. It wasnt uncommon to see your class go from good to crap in a season. It kind of turned into a race to 3k before you got nerfed all to hell.
Enough about WoW though, why did I quit Rift? Well, when I got to 50 I didnt feel like having to work all over again for all that gear. I did it in WoW and I didnt want to have to do it again in Rift (this is on the PvE side of things). For PvP I just couldnt stand there only being warfronts. I didnt like BG grinding in WoW and this, to me, is no different and equally as unenjoyable. Seems I burned out on MMORPGs
So now my future is to give SC2 another try, even though I suck balls at it, and wait for SWTOR to come out. Hopefully by then I will be ready for MMORPGs.

I don't know how anyone can play an MMO and really enjoy it...
The only way to be good at an MMO is to put MASSIVE amounts of hours in just to get the "itamzzzzzz". Then once you have your gear, a child could click those buttons and win.
Seems so boring, repetitive, with a low skill ceiling.
PLUS you have to pay every month, PLUS upfront game cost!

I love the community aspects of MMO's - the guild/alliance activities, cooperative and competitive instances, large-scale wars, and most of all, just having a ton of people to chill with in a long-term basis. For this reason I feel like paying monthly fees are worth it for the most part.
I haven't tried Rift, but once I have lots of free time in the summer, probably going to grab onto an MMO... kind of hoping Cabal2 is released by then.
