I find this thread come up quite often. Some say how korean keyboards and KTEC mice are far superior. As people are willing to pay up to 10x their worth for shipping etc... But in my opinion, I'm quite content with my 10 year old keyboard and $15 mouse from walmart.
Just use what you're used to. I find those extravagant keyboards from razer or steelseries to be of less quality, and too bulky for my taste. As long as it's qwerty and has a numpad I'm fine with it. I don't need flashy lights or anything to type or play a game.
Headphones are another story altogether though. I love my bose headphones.
If your heart is set in stone of upgrading, go to bestbuy or a similar store and find one that you like. Type away or spam 1a2a3a4a5a6a7a8a9a0a on the display keyboards and find one that you enjoy the most.
If you're heart is set on LED lights and macro keys, then go to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com and find one that suits your needs/desires/price/specs range.
If you like laptop keyboards, then you should use the Logitech 920 Ultra Thin. I've been using it for a year and it's amazing. It's scissor switch just like laptop keyboards, but it types even smoother than laptop keyboards. It used to be expensive, but now it's only like $80 on Newegg. A keyboard isn't something you want to save money on. You'll be typing on a keyboard for several hours a day for a few years, so the extra money you spend on a better keyboard pays off.

what are your favorite keyboards and could someone help me find a cheap low profile keyboard with volume options, with also a mute button?
im currently using a old shitty block dell keyboard that i got back in 2004.
I have the same one, except in 2002 I think I always buy the cheap Microsoft ones, I don't understand the differences in keyboards. What makes mechanical so preferred?

I don't think they sold them back in 2002... I got a dell in early 2003 and it didn't come with the keyboard pictured above. I got another dell in 2007 and it did.
Still using it.... home keys are worn down so that I can barely feel the pieces that stick out, and spacebar has a huge smooth spot from my right thumb, and it's full of crumbs/etc, and other quirks, but it still gets the job done and it's the keyboard I'm used to since 2007 broodwar so it will be a pain for me to upgrade.
Microsoft Sidewinder X4. Have had this for like almost a year now and now complaints what so ever. Someone might think its wrist pad is useless but i havent used one so don't know about that. It must be one of cheapest gaming keyboards. At time i bought it was 44 eur.

I could be way off perhaps. I just have an old old Dell computer with the exact keyboard.
For me its not so much high vs. low but the fact that I really don't like rubber dome keyboards. For high-profile I have a compact IBM Model M.
For low profile I have a compact Apple keyboard. Its rubber dome, but so low profile I don't get the "did I actually press the key?" feeling that annoys me about rubber dome.
I need a wrist guard to play at this point T_T. I like mid actually, high gets annoying but low (the apple keyboard, I have one too T_T) is almost impossible. Using a microsoft wireless keyboard 6000 v3. works pretty well but using the F keys are impossible

I have one right now. Spilled some water on it and the space stopped working so now I macro'd it on S1 and it's a pain but it works.
That's what I use. If you like the feel of your old keyboard, I got this for my laptop so I can still use the f keys for starcraft, and to have a better keyboard overall for other games.
I don't use the media buttons but you can see it has all the volume controls, etc. The best buy link above says usb capable but the one I have is just a chord (and it had been a little cheaper; I think I got it on sale or something).
edit- oh, this isn't low profile though. This is high profile obv.

Oh wow, a tenkeyless model M. How much did you get that for? Those are so rare and hard to come by these days and usually cost a pretty penny.
Generally I type on a Filco and a Thinkpad laptop keyboard. For gaming and normal use I definitely prefer the regular profile keys.

It cost me about $80 three or four years ago. It was a very lucky find.
The Saitek Eclipse II, seconded. I have had this keyboard for about 4 years and gave it a full component cleaning a couple weeks ago. It is essentially brand new again.
Keys are responsive, light, and not very noisy. Everything comes apart easily and without damage. Backlit keys haven't faded a bit.
I personally prefer the purple backlight, but I switch it up to keep things interesting.
Any mechanical keyboard is awesome. You don't notice they are high profile at all. I don't know how I ever used my low profile Razer keyboards for so long. I loved them. Now I've got a Filco and I'll never look back. It's like typing on a cloud.

Have you tried the Black Widow? I've never been a fan of the other razer keyboards, but i've heard good things about it.
I have this keyboard and I don't really like it. I mean it's okay, but I don't think it's anything special for the price. I would rather have the OPs keyboard (I use to use that one). I do like how it's decently quiet though. I have a roommate so this is important for me.
Maybe I just need to clean it like the above guy. My spacebar is fucked up too.
simple keyboard that has yet to fail on me. no need for media buttons since i bind winamp shortcuts (play/stop/previous/next) to ctrl+up/down/left/right arrow respectively.

I mostly like it for the small keys. I don't have huge hands so it's much easier for me.
hahaha, I have the exact same keyboard in the OP, but I just ordered a steelseries 6Gv2. When I played at a cybergrounds lan in DC I got on a computer that had a Model M on it and I just fell in love with the way mechanical keyboards felt. I'll end up using the 6Gv2 for just about everything but I'll need to keep my crappy dell keyboard around since I still haven't gotten to the point where I don't need to look at the stickers to type in Hindi.

I used the saitek eclipse 2 for about 2 years before the rubber domes gave in and I had to replace it (got a mechanical keyboard this time.) I enjoyed the quietness of it the keyboard and the backlighting, the keys are a little spread out out so not the best for hotkeying units 1 - 9 with small hands.
