Back when I was a young teen, I would go over to my friend's house, and we played SC for houuuurs - for the N64. In retrospect, it was awkward, slow, clunky and would been insanely painful for anyone with any semblance of RTS experience to play - but we had no idea of any of that. It was just one of the most entertaining games to play. We loaded up Bloodbath and played 2v2 against 2 easy computers. We never bothered to make more than 10 - 12 scvs...We spent the first 10 minutes securing the front with bunkers, turrets and tanks, then we dealt with any potential 20 minute mutalisk harass. We never cared to play it for the PC, or actually learn what a 'good' game of SC looked like, we were content being so awesome at 2v2s. Eventually when SC2 came out, I ended up wanting to check it out because of all the good memories, and it evolved into something far more than I'd ever imagined. A great game, with great communities around it, at a really interesting time for the scene - all sparked, for me, by the N64 game :D
I was wondering...did anyone else lovingly struggle through the N64 version of this game? What were your impressions of it at the time?
|
I rented it once. (PAL edition, rare as balls now). I'd played the PC version about twice, so I knew what the general idea was.
Played my brother who played quite a bit of SC. The game was absolutely awful, and it was only entertaining as a bit of a novelty item. Still played a bit of it though.
|
Played it for 3 years with my brother. Loved that game. Thought the computers were pretty damn good at the time. Ctrl groups were awful to use, but we had automine! Haha. Game always lagged like crazy when you hit 200/200 armies. I thought the computers were too easy though (despite being "good", still easily beatable), so but multitask in that game was so impossible if I purposely let them get to lategame, it was an insane challenge to beat and super fun, especially protoss when it got carriers! Omg, trying to play as Terran was just insanely hard, took forever to give commands with that controller.
In short, yes, and I loved it. Could never go back though.
|
10 years from now, this is going to be one pricey collectors item
|
I dont think I could call it a "loving struggle," but a friend and I tried to play the N64 version in an emulator a few years back. As far as a console interface to a RTS I think it was about as good as it could have been (which is of course horrendous in comparison to a PC).
All I can say is...at least it had automine...it would have been unfathomably painful without it.
|
I rented this game before. I'd always go hydras, hydras beat everything so I made a lot of them. Epic game!
|
ahahaha, carrier battles were so much fun! they'd just jump every 3 seconds, until 20 seconds later everything was dead. aaaahhh, the memories!
i think i might pick it up on ebay for the lulz.
|
Still own this game and i always played zerg. Like kyhol said, mass hydras all day long. Ling/Muta was always alot of fun too lol.
|
I've got my N64 cartridge and it still works. Its what got me into starcraft to begin with, ages ago. Good times.

On topic though, although I never played this version, here is what wikipedia says about it:
In 2000, StarCraft 64 was released for the Nintendo 64, co-developed by Blizzard Entertainment and Mass Media Inc. The game featured all of the missions from both StarCraft and the expansion Brood War, as well as some exclusive missions, such as two different tutorials and a new secret mission, Resurrection IV.[61] Resurrection IV is set after the conclusion of Brood War, and follows Jim Raynor embarking on a mission to rescue the Brood War character Alexei Stukov, a vice admiral from Earth who has been captured by the Zerg. The Brood War missions required the use of a Nintendo 64 memory Expansion Pak to run.[62] In addition, StarCraft 64 features a split screen cooperative mode, allowing two players to control one force in-game.[63] StarCraft 64 was not as popular as the PC version, and lacked the online multiplayer capabilities and speech in mission briefings. In addition, cut scenes were shortened.[61] Blizzard Entertainment had previously considered a PlayStation port of the game, but it was decided that the game would instead be released on the Nintendo 64.[64]

Only real men play Starcraft on N64! But all jokes aside i think it's a fun game as long as you don't take it too seriously while playing with someone else because, you know, both players use the same screen. xD

This was one of the most faithful ports ever for any game. Someone put up a blog post a while back stating how awesome the conversion was, but I can't find it anymore. Back then, no one could've anticipated the multiplayer explosion, so it's best to review this on the basis of its singleplayer merit.
They could've gone the easy route and removed a few units or missions to save cart space, but they kept everything they possibly could. You even got the Brood War missions! The only thing removed was the mission briefing audio, which is understandable.
You'll never see a port like Starcraft 64 ever again due to the increases in development time, which is a shame.

haha, nopeee. but glad you can relate!

oh man, this game was so incredible. THIS GAME is the reason i started playing SC on the PC and slowly crept into the competitive aspect of it. definitely terrible from a gameplay standpoint by comparison to any PC RTS, but when you're in the 6th grade and you don't know any better.... :D
me and my best friend at the time would have nights where we seriously would play one, maybe 2 games against each other for 3-4 hours. we were such scrubs too, our general style was to turn on all of the cheats, then cycle through the money code about 50 to 100 times (and if anyone remembers the process for enabling cheats, enabling it 100 times felt like it took FOREVER) and then make a shit ton of tier 3 air units and throw them at each other until someone's base started falling apart, lol. the game would play at about 5 FPS and we could constantly see what the other player was doing - but it was still fun as shit.

Still got it, a big corner chunk of the cartridge that plugs into the 64 is broken off, the part you usually blow on wipe with q-tip. Its where I first played Starcraft ever, and I was hooked very badly. Interesting tid bit though, you know how slow that damn game was, well i was so overwhelmed, I told my friend (who introduced me to the game) to slow it down. If you got it, please, slow it down, and see how fast I needed it to play. Of course now I'm the friend in the group that beats all the others since im addicted to SC as I'm sure most of you are as well.
EDIT: the corner chunk may be missing, but it still plays completely normal.
|
it was a terrible game, but I enjoyed every last minute of it
|
ROFL, yes - this was also the first time I ever played SC. Good (painful?) memories there.
|
perfect idea.
next time get get a JvF final.
it must be played on this.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

I remember reading about it in Nintendo Power magazine. I was into Super Mario 64, Super Mario Kart 64, and Banjo Kazooie type of games though back then. I didn't play Starcraft 64, but I did play the crap out of STARfox 64. lolz
|
Looking back I can't believe that it didn't dawn on me to look at my friends screen when we played. Ahh the days of innocence.
|
Just played this a month ago against my buddy who can't beat me in SC2 so he challenged me in SC64.
Let's just say micro doesn't exist, so Zealot rushes are ridiculously powerful xD
|
I too hired it with a friend. It was pretty Brutal compared to the PC version so while we played one of us would always link it back to the PC version and go, ohhh yeah this is so much worse
I think we ended up playing some LAN SC on PC after, hahaha, good times. Nice thread!
|
I loved this game, you could never play on any map larger than 64x64 or it fastest speed would feel like normal. Also auto mining and 150 mineral spawning pools was tight too. I remember trying to go back and muta micro on it, and thinking it was really easy lol
|
I heard about this, though I usually spent my childhood playing Command and Conquer, Red Alert, and Warcraft 2 on the Playstation. IMO, console RTS controls were extremely archaic back then.
Also, how was the split screen multiplayer? It seems that screenlooking completely negates proper scouting.
|
I played it after already having been pretty experienced in the PC version. I just loved SC so much, I wanted any game about SC. The computer was a difficult thing to get on with my family using it too, so the N64 version let me play it more.
What I loved most about it was split screen. I thought it was just the coolest thing I could play SC with a friend next to me!
Also, the campaign forced me to not cheat so it was the first time I actually went through the campaign cheat-free.
I still play it sometimes now too. Triumvirate! Great fun!
|
Me and my brother used to play eachother all the time but we would agree not to attack eachother untill we were both 200 200 then we would battle it out haha. Protoss always won.
|
Ah, fun times. It feels almost embarassing that I liked the N64 version, with all its awkward controls, at the time :-). Not having a attack button or move button, only something inbetween, was so rediculous in retrospect lol. You'd have to spam the attackmove button thingy like 50 times to sucessfully disengage from a battle.
Still complaints aside my friend and I loved kicking the computer's ass on coop. We only played island maps because the computer would always crush us with its first push otherwise.

To be fair, if you're playing on the N64 against other players, enjoying it, you probably aren't good enough to know what to look for anyways.
|
I found a guy selling this, and I hope that I will get it for my birthday! But it looks like a fun challenge
|
I had that game. It was also my only gateway to the Starcraft world. I had no PC version until SC2, but I still had a lot of fun playing against the computer on Lost Temple or something like that. Heheh
|
I remember playing Red Alert for the ps1. Took me roughly half an hour to target and command my army.
|
starcraft 64 is how I got into starcraft
I still remember beating the campaign missions one level at a time and playing with friends/brothers like all day
nostalgia man

It wasn't the developers fault , they did the best they could. SC on N64 was a terrible idea to begin with.

There was a N64 emulator for the PSP and I thought it would've been cool to play sc on the PSP even though it wouldn't work well at all haha, but never got it to work
|
Heh, my friend got this for me as a kinda-joke present this past Christmas. It's not nearly as terrible as people make it out to be. It's playable, which is more than can be said for most PC -> Console ports. Obviously it's not going to play anywhere near as well as on PC, but they did the best they could with an N64 controller.
On a another note, the PlayStation Diablo port was actually really good.
|
I played it sometimes at a friend but i can barely renember. We always ended playing Mario Kart anyway when we would play on Nintendo64.
|
I discovered Starcraft through the N64 as well. Once I realized it was a computer game and I bought the computer version I couldn't play it on the N64 anymore because the fastest setting on the N64 is like playing normal on the computer.
However, you could have 18 units in a group on the N64 instead of just 12! I think I've lost the cartridge though which makes me kind of sad.
