A quick rant: Today I realized one important difference between bw and sc2: The countdown in the beginning of a game. In bw there's this epic "beep beep beep" while it's counting down from 5 to 1, after this the game immediately starts, which still feels like "okay, now it's on, I'm gonna crush this noob, kekekeke" (sorta ) This kicks ass, when you've joined a game and the host has clicked on "start game". It's like: "You've got exactly five seconds until the chaos breaks loose. Just FIVE seconds. You better prepare yourself."
in sc2 (I played the beta) it's just a plain "clack-clack", and then there's this f...ing loading screen, where I never know, when the evil bar has finished its journey from left to right. No epic "beep beep", and no thoughts like "omg omg he's got a [KR] tag...". (more like: "well, he's favored. That's not fair, I want to be favored, too!") I remember sitting in my chair and waiting for the opponent (who must have been playing on a 486 machine) to finally load the map, and my thoughts were like: "god dammit, I don't want to stare on this picture of a random planet, I want to play!" And when the game suddenly started, I managed to clone my drones, but completely missed this early-game adrenaline rush, because I've been busy staring at progress bars.
Does this blog post have a deeper meaning? I guess no. It's just something, I wanted to say. Thank you for your patience.

I agree. In bw it was as you say, beep, beep .... beep, swoosh! And you're off into amazingness.
And the 30 second custom map countdowns are so unnecessary. I'd love to know the reasoning behind that...

Agreed. I wish they changed it so the map loaded beforehand, and THEN the 3 second count down occurred - would lend a lot to more smooth gameplay.

Isnt that 10 now? Anyway, the idea over sounds good.

I don't like the loading screen ~_~ It's so suspenseful!! ~____~

Also, I find the intros so much less... epic in GSL. In BW there would be the intro video, then as soon as it finished you would catch the last few seconds of beeping, mixed with some hype music, then the mission screen, boom in game. It created this feeling that something fucking awesome was about to start!

Even BW loading screens are more visceral than SC2 hahaha.

I actually hate the countdown sound. If I could disable it, ohh, that'd be awesome. Because that sound freaks me out and empowers my anxiety. <.<

The reasoning behind that was it's the default value set in the map editor. If you are making a map you can set the countdown timer I do believe Most map makers are just terrible and don't know about that!

With every broodwar-beep there's a jolt of the good old adrenaline pumped into the brain, I'd sign the petition to bring it back!

The swoosh was the best part. Also more predictable so korean fans could do their player countdown cheers.

I would have to agree, it's anticlimactic.

The biggest practical problem with the current setup is that you don't know exactly when the game is going to start, since it's all dependent on how fast the map loads. Definitely a fan of just loading the map and *then* starting the countdown so there's no "waiting for 10 seconds with your hand over the e key ready to start a probe".
