Be warned: Spoilers about whether or not games were good in today's Code A GSL.
I know that this has been said before. But I really hate it when Tastosis calls gg 20 times a game.
Particularly the Code A matches today, every time there was a push it was "Well, I think this is GG... I don't know why he isn't typing gg here..." And then that guy comes back from whatever slightly bad position he was in. Then its immediately gg for the other player... until he stops that small push.
Look guys, you're good casters. Great casters, even. But enough is enough. You called GG 6 times within 5 minutes on game 2 of the Gilja v Sangho game. The Byun/Golden game was almost worse, since you started calling gg roughly fifteen full minutes before the end actually came.
Every time you call gg, and the game keeps going, it makes you look bad. I know you're better than this, but not everyone does, and if I'm starting to get annoyed, you can bet others are. In fact, I know other people have mentioned this before. Yes, making the game feel like there's an epic comeback occuring will add excitement. But only the first one or two times. After that, it just gets annoying.
Come on guys. Just cast the game, and let the ending sort itself out. We'll know when the game is over when we see gg typed on the screen
EDIT: I know its horribly bad form to call out people who are starring this blog, but if you're going to 1-star it, at least explain why? I mean its not like i did this to gain popularity. If you disagree with me, tell me why.

to be fair, the byun vs golden game WAS over 15 minutes before it actually ended, golden threw the game away. it didnt take great play to win from his position when tasteless called that game, it only took some small measure of competency, which, when under pressure, golden appears to be lacking.
|
I know, and as Tasteless said, its different because if these were code S players, the game would've been over. But they aren't code S, Golden wasn't expanding, he Did suicide his infestors repeatedly, and I never thought the game was definitively over until that terrible final engagement, and even then i wouldn't have bet money on either player, simply based on how many crazy things had happened that game. I'd seen enough of that match to know that the outcome was anything but predictable.
In their place, I would have waited to call gg until it was typed, and then explained why it was gg.

I agree, they should just stick to describing how terrible the situation is mostly.
Telling us its game really ads nothing when they do it so often, they should be mindful and only pull out the GG in situations that warrant it.
|
Yeah, I was actually noticing this today. Its one area where I would say they could learn from Day9. I think it was one of the Blizzard HQ games he did where one of the guys was very clearly dead but Day just refused to say the game was over.

You can be like the Korean commentators and just sigh dramatically in such situations

It's stupid that the observer sometimes don't understand Artosis/Tasteless and doesn't know where the heck he should be showing. I am guessing a Korean obs? They should fix that asap.
I am liking the rotation of camera, and he moves around bases/fields of battle a lot, but he never clicks the units that harass for units killed number.

As they've mentioned, the observer is new and you can leave feedback for him at the gom forums.

Tasteless and artosis expect players to play near perfect...and they should. It's a carry over from broodwar I guess, since players there would rarely make game breaking mistakes.
In todays games...+ Show Spoiler +if golden played properly and didnt make any mistakes, the games would have been over when artosis and tasteless said so. Unknown to tasteless and artosis golden either lost his cool completely or doesn't know how to play the game properly yet. I don't think it makes them look bad at all. They should have been right in those situations.
|
I don't watch the English stream so I can't really comment on that, but I can tell you that the Korean commentators never do this.
If a dangerous (and most likely game-ending) push is coming in, they will say something like "Player X is looking to end the game right here!", "Player Y is going to have a hard time holding this off" or "Player Y is in a really difficult situation right now".

Except apparently players arent playing anywhere near perfect...so Tastosis gets it wrong...alot.
They need to adapt their casting to fit the reality of what is actually happening.

agreed with OP
sayin gg before the opponent does detracts from the excitement of when GG actually happens. it's okay to do it sometimes but not all the time. it might take a bit of the energy away from the game if gg is called too soon too.
|
I don't mind it. It's an indication of when, all things considered, the game is absolutely over as far as they can tell.
Tasteless will occassionally go a bit overboard with "I don't think he can hold this" but when Tastosis outright say it's gg, it should be. It's just that players don't have total map vision and it's a tournament worth a ton of money. They don't GG until they can see it's 100% over and they've composed themselves.
|
It's generally bad form for a commentator seeking to provide entertainment to ever declare a game is over. The audience can, sure, but you don't really want to ever rule out the possibility of a comeback as someone trying to build excitement for the game.
So I agree, 100%.

I know it's probably just semantics, but they should never say "this should be gg". I wouldn't mind them saying something like, "this game looks like it's pretty close to being over" or "so and so sure has a good chance of taking this game", but to say that it should be over, and then reiterate it over and over makes me cringe.
|
"Expect a gg any second, now"
That annoys the heck out of me every time, and Tasteless says that, or something along that line, pretty much every game. Then if the player doesn't gg, he'll often ask why he isn't doing so. I feel the same way about this as offensive gg'ing. Does it make Tasteless feel good about himself being able to predict a gg? Seriously, stop it. Respect a player's decision of not giving up immediately.

They are usually right, but it's true saying GG repeatedly is repetitive and detracts from the enjoyment somewhat.
I think it would work better if they used it as an opportunity to explain the game to a naive audience - how and why the position is very difficult to come back from. If they want they can note that in that case they themselves would probably gg. But they can still narrate and explain the action even if they have a strong informed opinion about what should/will happen from this point.
EDIT: I guess saying "saying GG repeatedly is repetitive" is sort of, uh, repetitive.

I do wish they'd only call the GG when a player actually gives it, even if they are right some of the time it just reflects badly on the player or the caster if they're wrong one way or the other. I also have no real problem with a player having "late" GG timing in a competitive scenario, sure if everyone was perfect the game would probably be over, but people make mistakes under pressure, and all it can take is one bad engagement or one clutch play for things to even out somewhat.
I did think this was going to be a plea for them to please learn the format of the Code S group stages, because it's pretty poor that you are paid to broadcast something but don't understand how it works after a week ><
Other than that, the actual commentary has been pretty awesome this season =)
