What's up guys, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is half price on Steam for the weekend and weighing in at around 6 quid for us UKers, not sure how much for everyone else.

It's an awesome and horrifying game so far. Graphics aren't great, they remind me of Thief 3, but the gameplay is extremely well thought out and legitimately horrifying. I read that one guy hid in a cupboard for 3 minutes haha...but I can't laugh because I have already hidden in a cupboard for maybe 1 minute, as I heard a guttural cry followed by a slow shambling sound.

You have to avoid the darkness because it makes you mad, and everywhere you go you can hear things shuffling, doors creaking, insects crawling. It really makes you think you are being stalked at all times. I just got attacked by something but I pegged it and was too afraid to turn and face it.

Basically, if you imagine combining Thief with Silent Hill and a little bit of Resi, you'll end up somewhere with this game. DEFINITELY worth picking up for so cheap!!!

Right, back into Amnesia, with my heart in my mouth!!!!

EDIT: Oh dear. My guy is already almost insane. The screen is taking ages to follow where I point. And it keeps telling me to make progress. BUT every time I go somewhere something fucked up happens. If you let your guy see 'paranormal' things like doors opening on their own or water appearing out of nowhere, you lose sanity!!! Right now my 'mind meter' has gone from 'headache and hands trembling' all the way to '...' haha.

Thanks for the tip. I have a feeling this game will go on sale for like $5 during the Winter sale, though.

I really really recommend this game! Perfect for anyone who liked the Penumbra series (same creators).

It's kind of like an old point and click adventure, but with a 3d engine. You find different items and combine them to solve puzzles. All this while being scared as shit because the game really is horrifying.

yeah good point Snaill, the game is a really fun puzzle'em'up because you can't actually fight the enemies that stalk you, you just have to run and keep sane!!!! And beating all the puzzles and keeping a MENTAL IMAGE of the whole place is fucking hard when you are constantly hearing footsteps in the background!!

I don't mind scary games to be honest, but when you can't even see walls and stuff because of how dark it is it just pisses me off. I liked RE5 for example, but I have a feeling this game would piss me off too much because of visibility issues lol
If you watch Godzilla backwards it's about a benevolent lizard who helps rebuild a city and then moonwalks into the ocean.

Amnesia wont be pissing you off, it will be pissing your pants :D

Scariest game I've ever played atleast. RE5 can't even be compared, that game was terrible.

The light sourcing is extremely realistic. So if you dislike realism you will dislike this game. How much light do candles actually provide? Very very little. And by the way, you can definitely see the walls. I would say the lighting reminds me of Thief 3. However you can turn the gamma up if you want to be playing in a sunshine field.

I'm a huge pansy when it comes to anything related to the horror genre, but I always wondered a few things about this game. I've caught a couple of people streaming this game on TL and watched for quite a bit, but what exactly makes this game so scary? I'm sure the experience is completely different when actually playing the game instead of watching a stream, but I've never actually seen anything happen. The most that occurred was the screen would shake or there would be a growl/scream in the background, but there's never or rarely an enemy in sight. It felt like the player was never in any threat because the enemies were too few and far between. At first there was a lot of tension, but later on if the player came across an eerie room, you could sort of expect that there was nothing threatening about it.

it's the fact that you have no way to fight anything, and if you have surround sound, you constantly hear things stalking you!!!! It's hard to explain, but the game just robs you of all sense of perspective when you are playing it. You constantly feel pressured to find the next solution to your current predicament because your oil is going to run out (from your lamp) soon and then you will die!!!

The music always crescendos too, making you think action is coming. The fear of attack is far stronger than the fear of being attacked, really. Once the monster is there you starting thinking of ways to fight it, but when you are being stalked it's fucking awful.

Also you have to hide in the darkness but the darkness makes you weak and you eventually die in it...so when you DONT KNOW if you are being stalked and therefore need to hide or not, you aren't sure whether to gamble your sanity or your health!!!

Also, the game always puts 'being stalked' sounds like footsteps and creaks ALWAYS on your left an right. You can't focus on them, ie work out where they are coming from. Very very unsettling and unnatural feeling haha.

Hm, alright. I guess that's sort of what I was getting at, though. What actually kills the player? Are there enemies that actually follow you or do the game sounds just make it appear that way? I'm not trying to downplay this game, but I just haven't seen much "threat" from all the streams that I've watched.

I got this game about 4 months ago or so. I haven't been able to finish it. I'm down in the dungeons, and there's a monster down there. It can see me.
Excuse me hun, but what is your name? Vivian? I woke up next to you naked and, uh, did we, um?

No dude there are actual beasts that attack you. Right now I am being stalked by a monster in the water that attacks when you are in the water. YOu have to jump from crate to crate and you can use hacked up flesh to keep it occupied for awhile by throwing it in. But there are a lot more examples of tension and scary music than actual creatures.

Part of the things that make any movie, game, etc. the most scary is the presentation of the unknown. If they show you the monster straight up, that's no longer as scary [and as a previous post said, death is a possibility, otherwise the game would just be silly lol]

Beaten this game like a month ago, definitely can freak you out some times . The feeling of being helpless against everything since you have no weapon definitely plays a big factor in making you feel scared.

I've made it about 3 hours in... they slowly work you up to having to run and hide like a pansy. Now that they've gotten to that part, there are monsters lurking around the corner somewhat often. Or at least the noises make you think so. -_-

Good man! My palms are sweaty and I didn't enjoy my steak dinner because of this game haha. Getting used to the fear now, but it's still a bitch. Learning to find my friend in the darkness!!!!

And to the guy who asked, yes you get chased by zombies that are really fast once they see you haha, you can actually see them they are proper zombies. You can't kill them tho, and they kill u in 2 slashes.

RE5 wasn't scary in the slightest.
try RE1/2 or Silent Hill 1/2
THATS THE STUFF!

@ Amnesia ...
I don't like whats being shown in the trailer ...
Either the scenes have a ton of solutions (would be great, but i somehow doubt that) or it would be extremely trial&error'ish. I am guessing the latter which really turns me off in a game.

Holy cow, I went to my friend's place and ended up trying Amnesia out because his comp can actually run it.

What a sick game. I basically saw various reviews/videos of Amnesia prior to playing so I knew the first hour and half of the game so I let my friend play past the water part and I took over after that. The atmosphere/sound is just perfectly done to scare the absolute bejezus out of you. When I saw videos of people playing the game and freaking out about the zombie (I mean it's just a auto attacking zombie) I was wondering why they were so flipped out about it but when you play the game in a dark room with headphones cranked up, it's scary

Only quibble I have about the game is that some of the stuff that you have to do isn't really obvious. My friend and I was stuck at the beginning for like 30 minutes around trying to figure out what to do before we had to resort to gamefaqs to find out that we had to use the lab and we spent another 15-30 minutes wandering around and backtracking only to find out that there was a hidden hole in the wall being covered by boxes (and the game being 99% is pitch dark without the lantern doesn't help either). I mean my friend was playing the game and we had like 3-4 other people in the room watching him play, helping him spot tinderboxes/oil/other stuff that he might miss and we all didn't see the stupid hole.

This might be more of a complaint against the genre though, I could never play Resident evil/silent hill games because I always miss something and I hate using guides/gamefaqs.

I can never play these games. It looks pretty cool, but I get startled really easy and start mad jerking around. I couldn't even get past 4 levels of doom 3. My instinctual fear of the dark stresses me out too much as well, haha. My imagination's probably a few touches too active for my own good. And when I'm helpless in a game, that is the worst feeling ever. In doom 3 it was getting caught with your flashlight out instead of a gun, and in amnesia you don't even have a weapon, plus messing with your mind is scary (the fallout vault where you saw stuff was bad too). Not for me, however, I will watch and enjoy other people getting scared playing the game.

EDIT: Holy shit, that WTF video is hilarious! And the guy who says "Oh shit, I've got a bag of milky ways!" sounds totally like Seth Rogan.
How's the weather down there?

You owe it to yourself to buy this game. This is insanely good. It's by the same people who made the Penumbra series, which is also something you need to buy.

Also, in the very beginning the game recommends you play it with headphones on for the sound. LISTEN TO THEM, they know what they're talking about, it really makes it intense.

Is there any chance that this game will ever be ported to the ps3 or psn? I'm not really into FPS but I'm really into console games that deliver some sort of visceral experience. Like re4. This is probably way scarier however since you're completely helpless. I reallllyyy want this game. But I wouldn't play it on the pc.

If you are going to play this game then do so at night with all your lights turned off. Use a headset with the volume rather high and try not to rush through the game. Read all the notes and follow the story. You will probably have to take breaks regularly to remain sane though

I got this game today and have played it for 3 hours so far and I love it.

Am I the only one who felt like this game wasn't as scary as the classics of this genre, ie. the first Clocktower?

Edit:
I just felt like the enemy AI was too stupid compared to the golden standards of the escape puzzles :/

This guy's got the right idea. At the very beginning of the game they give you a few suggestions on how to get the ideal experience, follow them it really does wonders.
