Apparently sushi restaurants don't use real wasabi because the shit is hard to grow and therefor expensive as fuck. Most of the time you go, you get this horseradish/mustard mixture with green food coloring.
Can you tell the difference here? (don't google before voting cheater)

Right. Wasabi is more yellowish than greenish.
Well, you can get wasabi powder, but yeah, I didn't ever think it was real wasabi.
I don't think it's good anyway. so. =D doesn't matter to me xD
Buuut yeah, wasabi on right.
I know the one on the left is fake, because it looks the same as the stuff I get in my wal-mart sushi and I would be shocked if they used anything real.
Why is this not common knowledge? I feel like it's false advertisement or something >.< I demand reparations Shouldn't it always say imitation wasabi or have some asterisk next to wasabi on the menus or have some cheap name like other imitation products like 'whasabi' or something
Real Wasabi is too expensive to import. If ur a real sushi lover, make ur own sushi, buy and grind ur own wasabi and enjoy :D.
also Sashimi > Sushi
Just because you don't know something doesn't make it "not common knowledge" my dear CharlieMurphy.
Stuff on the right looks like it was grated up so I'm going with that. I've actually never had real wasabi but I do know I've been eating the fake stuff at restaurants because of its paste texture and taste exactly like horseradish.
Wasabi should be on the right in my opinion.
The left one is way too green, appears to be more influenced by green food coloring.
At some restaurants in Japan, they give you perhaps a 4 cm stalk of wasabi and make you grate it yourself, lol.

I did not know this. CharlieMurphy taught me something!?

i said the one on the left is fake, cos its a good colour green so therefore imitation right?
but tbh i'd never be able to tell the fkn difference
not really sure if i care either tbh lol
wasabi is pretty gross anyway IMO, always throw that shit out
I say the real is on the right... I think its the 'greeny-ness' that gives it away... I think.
I never really use wasabi, Sushi is too expensive for me to try to see how spicy I can eat something. I save that for burritos and chili!
But yeah, I never new it was fake, but I never really cared.
Edit: I'd say the one on the right is real since what I usually see is a light green like what is on the left. So if what I am seeing is fake and the one on the left is what I see, it must be fake.
lol you complain about the green coloring added, then post one green picture and one yellow one. Duh.
it's not yellow on the right, it's just a lighter shade of green. I didn't say how much food coloring was added. For all we know the green food coloring is not strong/correct enough to match the real stuff. Why would they over green it if they are trying to make it look like the stuff on the right?
the one on the right definitely looks way more yellow than green to me personally. O_o
maybe its just the lighting with the picture or something.
Hmm, I'm going to go with the majority and say the legit stuff is on the right. The fake stuff always looks too real...
I wonder whether the wasabi they serve with the sushi here on campus is good or not. Maybe I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it here and a sushi gosu can help me out. I can't believe some of the posters here eat sushi without it, you gotta stir it in the soy sauce, it's the only way! It tastes so bland otherwise. :/
So which one is the fake and which one is real? Wtf?
Even a lot of restaurants in Japan use the green wasabi. Real good restaurants in N.A. grind up the wasabi root at your table side (Megu in NYC for example).
the suspense is killing me
I want to try real wasabi and see if theres a big difference in taste now...

The flavour is more mild, and the texture is more moist and grainy.

Most sushi restaurants you're eating at are probably run by Koreans and Chinese anyways, so my outrage wouldn't start with the wasabi.
hmmm i figure wasabi on the right and imitation on left since i always see the one on the left =D
Jesus. Ending the "suspense."
+ Show Spoiler + Store bought wasabi on the left Freshly grated wasabi on the right A wasabi root in the back as well as pickled ginger.

Why under green/over yellow it? haha
Anyway. I think that can only be considered green if you're talking about skin color.

And baby carrots aren't actually tiny carrots. They're just big carrots cut smaller. O.O

But on topic, I couldn't tell the difference(didn't vote), googled it, and still didn't know which was which. I've seen my share of wasabi before, but I don't eat it, so I never really paid attention to the taste + colour.
I knew about this a few years ago, I asked my sister to bring back a root while she was in Japan so I could try the real thing. She kept it in her suitcase... on the outside pocket -_-
It got squished and was totally flattened when I opened it at home.
I was so sad, plus that's like $50 out the window (It was only half root)
well i figured the one of the left is imitation judging by your post! however, if asked for the color of wasabi, i'd probably say it leaned more green than yellow. i never knew it was yellow! :O not really a big fan of wasabi though :/
I've never seen yellow wasabi. The green shit is everywhere, so it's probably the cheaper one (fake).
Wow, never knew that. I wonder if I would actually like the taste of real wasabi?
I have a friend who was on Ecstasy at a part a while back. We were eating sushi and laughing and chatting, this guy walks in the room and you can tell he's out of his mind at this moment. He looks at us and then he looks at the wasabi... without a word, we're all looking at him, he picks up a big piece with his fingers and sniffs it up his nose as hard as he could. I'm dying laughing at this point, "is he seriously going to do this again?". He grabs a bigger piece and sniffs it up the other nostril. Tears were shedding from both of his eyes and to this day I still don't know why he did it, but it was originally funny. He never showed an ounce of regret.

Who cares about wasabi being real or not.
Pizza places making pizza with fake cheese is much more terribleliliier!
fuck wasabi
spicy mayo 4 life
You never bother with the wasabi unless the sushi chef actually puts some in there. And I thought majority would know that its just mostly dyed horse radish, the real shit is expensive and real picky on where it grows. If you really want to try it, they usually grow it in the Northwest or just go to Japan.
man everyone must be color blind, that is not yellow at all. I guess that's why everyone calls cyan ' teal ' in sc2..

The only thing that I can think of that might be imitation is the mayo at Jack in the Box. That shit is yellow and nasty looking/tasting.

Which would sorta be the cost anyway.

That shit is yellow and nasty looking/tasting. This actually happens a lot. About 70% of the cheese on storebought pizza, cheeseburgers etc. is not real cheese but something made of palm oil, starch, milk proteins and salts.
Not only is it cheaper but it is also more resistable to heat and has a few other advantages that make it more flexible to use in food preparations.

Yeah my thought as well. Now I am curious to try the real stuff and see if it really adds a lot to the sushi experience.
