I'm making this a blog post.
Poll: Which is first/lower in your hotkeys (1-4 range)

Any clarification that may be required.

The key 1-4 being the easiest to reach and access. Do you use them for buildings and marco or unit and attack micro?

1-4 units
5 all production buildings
6 CC/Nexus/Queens

Always felt that just 3 keys for units wasn't enough, so I moved up buildings/economy. But now I never seem to use 4 anyway lol.

1 main army, 2 air(phoenix) or caster 3 casters if I have air, 4 main unit producing structure, 5 all nexus, 6more unit producing stuff, 7 forge, 8 9 0 observer, i usually have one obs with my main army group too

Um, there's no option for buildings then units then buildings then units.

1 Nexi
2-5 Units
5-7 Production buildings (5 is gateways until warpgates then I have 'w' so it gets recycled for units)
8-0 Observers and buildings with upgrades (if I bother hotkeying them)

I find it much easier to 4a5a6a than 1a2a3a for some reason, my hand just feels to cramped for the latter and I can't hit it quickly or accurately so I find this way works out for me.

for terran:

1 - CC/Orbitals
2 - All rax
3 - Fac/Starport
4 - Bio
5 - Tanks
6 - Air
7 - Utility (ravens or something that needs to go off on it's own like banshees)

For zerg - I only just started and only play muta/ling (thanks LP!)

1 - Main Hatch
2 - Nat Hatch
3 - 3rd Hatch
4 - All queens
5 - Lings
6 - Roaches
7 - Mutas

For zerg I'm thinking about consolidating down to

1 - Saturated Hatches
2 - Unsaturated Hatches

At least that way I won't have drones running around all over the map wasting moving time from one base to another that you get when you put them all in one control group

I was mainly concerned about the first few. 1-4 ish. You could claim either as you put a building first, but you mainly use the lower for units.

Edit now that people have posted response I'll state my opinion.

I have been using units as my lower and its great micro for the battle but my marco fails and I quickly ramp up several thousand resources because I stopped building for the duration of the battle so I'm switching to buildings as the lower numbers to help entice me to build better.

I just found out today that I use the same hotkey setup TLO does:
1. CC/OC
2-4. units
5. rax
6. fac
7. starport
8-0 i have smallish hands not sure what TLO does for these

used to do 1-3 units, 4 nexus, but i find 1e easier than 4e and 4a easier than 1a, so i switched them.

I use 1 and 2 as a more competent person would press f5 and f6 or whatever the hotkeys are now for saving screens. So I have my starting CC on 1, my building SCV on 2, and whatever's being built on 3. Once I start making my army, it becomes 3, and when I expand, that CC becomes 2.

It's pretty bad though; my macro sucks because I have to double-tap 1 and scroll over to my Rax/whatever. All of my gameplay is centered around those 3 or so locations and for everything else I scroll around..

If I'm doing something funny like harass the harassing units are on 5-6 (ie Dropship on 5, the Hellions inside on 6).
now run into the setting sun, and suffer, but don't mess up your hair.
