Hey everyone!
Yes, I'm making yet another "Please recommend to me awesome games of a certain genre"!
This time it's MMO type games! What are some good hidden gems out there? The only MMO I ever really played was WoW, and it couldn't hold my interest for more than a week or so after I hit 80. When I first started playing WoW, I thought it was the goddamn stupidest thing I'd ever seen. I quit before hitting like level 15. I came back to WoW *years* later when I found a guild composed entire of friends of mine from another website. I got back into the game, and I had a lot of fun. Knowing so many people was awesome! I played for.... I dunno, 6-8 months? PvP was my favorite, and kicking ass in battlegrounds was one of my biggest leveling methods.
Anyway after hitting 80 I did raids for a bit, but it was so meh. I got bored and took a hiatus to play LoL and eventually SC2 beta. Recently a few weeks back I logged back into WoW for the first time in like a year, and the guild has fallen apart entirely. Apparently some drama or bullshit between some of the founders, and most people left for different guilds or servers or whatever.
LONG STORY SHORT..... What are some good MMO games out there? Or should I give WoW another try? Start over mebbe with a new group? I have no idea tbh, o.o;;;
I haven't played too many other MMO games. I did a free trial of Guildwars, but never got even remotely into the game. I tried Warhammer online, but it frankly sucked ass, (which is a real shame, because I'm a huge warhammer fan).
Right now LoL is fulfilling my need to stomp noobs in PvP, but I'm craving the whole leveling and gearing/building aspects. Part of me wants to start over in WoW, but another part of me wants to start over in a whole new game where I don't know anything about it, and need to learn everything. It's a lot more fun imho learning your character as you go.
Anyway, any suggestions? All replies are much appreciated. Thanks!!

EVERY MMORPG wants to be WoW, but isn't as good (yes, even EVE, Yahtzee is right, you are NOT, now hush!)
I'll prolly go back to WoW once Cata comes, and if it came today, I would play it.
|
MMORPGs are only as fun as the people you play them with. None of them, WoW included, have particularly good gameplay. Get some friends together first, then decide on a game.
|
the only MMORPG i've ever thought stood a chance to rival WoW was Ragnarok Online.
but pokemon universe seems like it has potential. (yes a pokemon mmorpg) D:

I dunno if Guild Wars really counts as an MMORPG per se, as its end-game comes relatively quickly and at that point a huge chunk of GW's end-game focus lies in the PvP, which is decidedly less RPG-ish than other games (as you can use max-items on call).
If you tried the 4v4/8v8 PvP and didn't find it your thing it's understandable, but if you only played the relatively dull PvE then all you did was (IMO) basically play the tutorial, hahah.

I honestly disagree. I personally think LotRO is better than WoW in a lot of aspects. If I'd be into PvP maybe I'd like AoC / WAR more. But I stuck to WoW, because of the people.
You must also consider the development time. WoW is out since 2004. They can reuse a lot of old technology. And it is still: If you're not into PvP - raid or die. Yeah the leveling experience is really good (story/quests in LotRO are better though). The endgame options arent very varied.

I'm actually excited to see them bring back Battlegrounds into their former glory as its now as rewarding as playing arenas.
And whats wrong with there being either PvP or PvE?
To me, (i'm not as good at this as baller), thats like saying SC is bad because you can only singleplayer(PvE) or multiplayer (PvP).

EVE ONLINE!!!! There is even a Liquid Corporation in it...and a TL thread about it so...

It's WoW in space without raiding, just the grinding, and you can either grind, pvp or sit on the auction-house all day long.
It's a second job that you have to pay for.

You might've been close if you said UO in space, but WoW focuses on self while EVE is world driven.
On topic: I've found going back to WoW to never meet my expectations to what happened in the past. Probably has a lot to do with my guild, started getting really shitty after tier 5ish. We were top 200 I think during that time. Then crazy drama with girls flying cross country to have sex for purples and such happened.
EVE is pretty fun, really gotten into it lately. The game rewards the smart which is a nice change of pace of whoever plays the most wins.
Edit: Actually ask Sadistx at the next dinner he has some good insight I'm sure. He was in a huge corp.

anarchy online is an interesting and unique(in a sense its nothing like wow) way. It's PvE aspects soon become really dull, however it's pvp system is very dynamic, reminiscent more of a shooter then your classic mmorpg, and the item system is insanely entertaining if youre a nerd, let me try to briefly explain-
there are 6 classic primary attributes(i.e. strength, intelligence). All items you use require certain amount of 2 or 3 of these attributes to wear, and the better the item the higher are the requirements. The best item have requirements much higher then what you naturally can achieve so you are forces to ladder up items that buff those attributes until you can finally wear the best in slot, so wearing Tier X requires meticulous planning, unlike roll and click thing WOW has going on.
Oh yeah and it has sorta much more intelligent crowd then WoW, so while everyone is a dick you can expect elaborate insults instead of being informed that someone have performed an indecency upon your mom.

It´s not out yet but "Dark Millenium Online" will be the shit. Warhammer 40k to its finest. i tried Allods its nice and free but not WoW. Anyways mmorpgs are all the same. Orks and Humans all over again.

I cant believe i am reccomending this to someone, but Runescape. Apparently its become very new-player friendly recently.
Yes, i still play it, but my addiction has passed.
And dont even get me started on Dark Orbit -.-

The Old Republic.... no release date yet unfortunately.
|
You may not want to go back to WoW for now, if you are planning on doing PvE. Cataclysm is in the horizon, and with your old gear you'll not be able to get into any raids except the worst of the worst.
Have you tried Asian MMOs like Maplestory? If you do not really like WoW, nor Maplestory, MMORPGs might not be your genre. These 2 games represent almost all the MMOs in terms of style and gameplay.
|
Guild Wars 2 when it comes out will be epic. Give it a try. Of course that's 2011 =/
|
Warhammer has an unlimited trial up until level 10 if PvP is your thing. You can play as long as you want but you can't go above level 10. I had a lot of fun and played it for a few months but the bugs were just a little to much so I stopped.
I don't recommend WoW especially if you have played it before. It has only gotten worse over the years. There is no challenge ever any more, it is just a massive time sink.
|
I'm another guy who recommends EVE... it's just so epic. You're free to do so many more things in that game than any other MMO, it's just so much ahead of its time.
I guess I'd recommend FFXIV when it comes out (end of september), if it's like FFXI (which from all accounts it will be) it should be very good, basically that teaming up with other people is extremely important.
The Old Republic (spring 2011 I think) should also be pretty good, though I don't know much about it. Guild Wars 2 is going to be quite different from the original, and it looks like it'll be pretty groundbreaking.
