I'm not sure if this is the trend outside of the United States, but for the past few years the popular music trends have been shifting towards rap, hip hop, and R&B.
Now I don't personally mind this shift - I'm pretty open to all sorts of different musical styles and I have to say that the recording studios have some absolutely genius editors on board producing the smash hits that are on the radio.
But from time to time I stumble upon these old videos on youtube and it makes me sad that you no longer need to be a good singer to become famous.

I think recently popular music shifts back towards pop-rock and classic girl pop, not rap. When I came to the US in 2003 it was all rap everywhere. 50 cent came out, obie trice, jay z, snoop, ja rule, shaggy, some other jamaican crap - that was all over the radio. Rap nowadays doesn't even sound like rap anymore.

You're definitely right, the newest mainstream stuff is very.... I don't even know how to describe it. It's like a more poppy, upbeat type of rap. I suppose you could call it hip hop, but not really.
I'm not sure what genre this is called, but there are a lot of songs right now where theres a main chorus, and aside from the chorus (which has a melody and everything) the song is pretty much "rap" (by rap I mean no singing just rhyming words to a certain rhythm; I think its hip hop?) A lot of todays new hits seem to be a fusion of techno and pop. A lot of it seems like dance (not that theres anything wrong with that, I love dance) but some of it sounds realllly similar to other songs (similar beat, chord riff etc) It's good fun, but the compositions like "Circle of Life" seem to be diminishing.
