mine is almost 4 years old and already is giving me problems T_T; it works fine after a fresh format...but after a few weeks or months, the shit hits the fan...so i need to format again (software is irrelevant..as i know its not a factor since my comp stops working randomly)...annoying. 4 years is kinda young...so i dont want to (lost the interest in) upgrade for SC2 just yet...i'll be playing BW until 2011 at least...then switch to SC2 only when i feel is the right time to buy a new Comp.

How much juice (in years) do you guys usually get out of Desktops? (not laptops, as i know these fuckers break every year)

I just bought a computer for $ 2k. It better last me 5 years or I will not be satisfied. I realize I might not be able to play every new game after a while though

You should have an option for less than 2 years...Plenty of people upgrade every year or less.

I switch out parts of the same rig almost twice a year, whether it be a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade, a case change, a GPU upgrade, etc. The only thing I'm probably going to keep for a while is my 850hx power supply, optical drives, and ram assuming DDR3 will be alive for a while.

Thinking about picking up the new HAF-X, and selling my 5970 while I can still get decent money off it till the 6xxx series hits.

I just built a new PC on April and I'm still upgrading it. My next purchase will be a solid state drive and a 6-core AMD 1090T. My buying habits say it will be replaced in two years. I don't think everything will go away. I plan to upgrade the motherboard/CPU/video card when AMD releases Bulldozer processors/chipset, and the rest of my stuff are reusable. Here is my setup:

AMD Phenom II x2 555 unlocked to B55 X4 (I really just wanted to find out if I could unlock it to X4, not my first choice, compared to rest of my setup it's the cheapest part)

G.Skill DDR1600 Ripjaws 8GB
Corsair 800W PSU
Western Digital 1TB 64MB cache Caviar Black x2
Gigabyte 890FX-UD5
LIAN LI PC-P80
ATI 5770 x2 Crossfire

I tried SC2 and everything's on max in 1920 x 1080 resolution. At one point I only had one ATI 5770 video card and I could still play SC2 with everything on max.

Many of those parts are some of the best stuff money can buy. Not necessarily the most expensive, but good price to performance ratio. I want to support competition and built an AMD comp . If I built an Intel setup I would have gone with an I7 930 and X58 motherboard.

Ive replace/switch parts slowly. But my rig is ancient, as I am still using a E6420/2GB DDR2 and a MSI P6N Mobo.

The only components I consider recent is my Sapphire 4770 and my quiet EarthWatts. Too bad my GPU cant run its fullest potential because my mobo technically doesnt support it and my CPU just doesnt do it anymore.

I dont seem to find the need for purchasing a 5850 or a GTX 4xx.

I voted for approx 5 years but that's only about complete upgrades. I usually switch a part or two once a year to keep it in good shape.
Generally I'd say that how many years a PC will last depends heavily on making a good choice when you buy it, ie don't get anything based on technology that will soon get out dated etc..

for $460, I think it retails at like $700. Also have a stable overclock at 1k/1.3k which is like a 37% boost from stock, so definitely a good card with a full 3 year warranty from asus.

That's a decent price alright. I'm a light gamer though :|

Around $800 every 4-5 years. Plus some minor upgrades in between, like RAM, graphics card or hard disk.

You bought a Mac?

To OP: this desktop has lasted me 3 years so far. Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 and ATI Radeon HD3850 is perfectly fine. I contemplated getting an i5-750 or i7-920 but that would require a new mobo upgrade as well so i said fuck it. I also don't see myself upgrading for quite some time because all the new games are pretty bad. As long as it can run SC2/D3 then I'm fine, and those two games might not even be good.

tl;dr 3 years and counting, will probably be 5+

That's almost exactly my schedule. Building it yourself you can do impressive things with $800

Every six months or so I catch myself upgrading something small, sometimes I skip a period and go mobo cpu.

Id say it comes off to be about 2 years for a new rig to turnaround.

Also, if people take care of their laptops it is a common misconception that they break more frequently than desktops.

I have an HP laptop that was at the end of the single core series. (It's like 2.4 single core or something, I lent it out to a friend in need while I have their rig in my shop,) It runs with Ati mobile x 600 series, and like 1 gb of ddr2 low speed ram. It can handle low setting starcraft 2, 17 inch widescreen monitor, 60 frames no lag.

People just need to take care of their equipment, dust buildup is a big laptop killer as all the hardware is obviously more compact, and therefore dust has a significantly larger impact on performance than it does in your average atx mid tower computer case.

Every couple of years or so I set cash aside to do some major upgrading if I can. Even if I can't set the money aside I figure within about 2 years or so It's about time to at least think about upgrading. Usually my upgrades come in the form of a whole new franken-system all together. In that 2 year or so span, I'm always working on minor components to try and get something just a bit better, or more useful.

My desktop hasn't had new parts since HL2 came out in 2004 and I got the Radeon 9600 XT bundle as well as new CPU/RAM. In that time, however, I've had two laptops -- first one in 2006, new one this spring -- and gradually used the desktop less and less. In fact the desktop has been decomissioned altogether now that I've started using my new laptop for gaming as well as work, and I'm not planning to get a new desktop until I've finished school and can afford to put together a nice gaming rig.

most of you seem to talk about updating because of performance reasons...

but my OP was more about updating because of numerous hardware glitches that makes usability annoying as fuck. after how many years do you guys usually start to have some "hardware annoyances" ?

ive only ever had two problems with parts from the past, and that was 5 years ago. fijrst was an ATA hard drive from my pre-built emachines from 2002. the other was from the same computer - 300w power supply that fried itself +motherboard.

i do a lot of freelance work from a computer, so my computer has to be in the high range constantly.

you wouldn't believe how many keyboards I've chewed through since 2009 just because I find it uncomfortable to work with. Now I have a closet full of keyboards :p
