Warning: Incoming is a lot of rage I need to let off about playing Fifa 10 world cup online.
I guess this is for discussion about online experiences that have pissed people off, advice for dealing with these situations, and anything else you feel is relevant.

So I picked up Fifa 10 world cup because I'm a huge soccer/football fan and a huge fan of the US team. I'm a pretty competitive person and I was pretty good at Fifa 09 and Fifa 10 (Over 75% win percentage online with USA), so I started playing online a lot.
1. Even though I pick the US every game, I don't mind it when people pick the 5 star teams like Spain, Brazil, Germany, England, Argentina, Italy and France every game. If they want to play with the best, that's cool. But some people have their favorite team as say... England. Then they go and pick their rival Germany. WTF... are you serious? Was England not good enough? Nice loyalty.
2. "Pinball" gameplay. All these fucking noobs get it to their best player(Torres, Villa, Rooney, Messi, Tevez, Fabiano etc.) and run right at you. My CB will make the tackle, and it pinballs right to their other forward for a breakaway. It happens in every single game and it accounts for 60% of the opponents goals. It's fucking ridiculous. Or they get it to god damn messi or henry and go sprint down the sideline. I put Onyewu or Bocanegra in position to intercept the pass, and it will bounce off them right to the other players forward.
3.Switch player AI is so fucking bad. This accounts for about 30 % of goals scored against me. I don't mind that the lb button sometimes decides to switch to a different player than I want, but when I push the right stick to manually choose who I want to control, I want it to go to that player fast. Most of the time it fucking lags and takes forever, or goes to a different person. The computer AI is so fucking stupid that if you don't control them, they don't get back in time to defend the thru ball, and then you have Torres scoring it and running around celebrating like he fucking did something special. I know exactly what the fucking idiot is going to do, but the game won't let me stop them.
4. Chipped thru balls are great for gameplay, but the defender AI is so terrible. I will be manually controlling the defender, Running towards my goal because I see the chip thru ball coming, sometimes the idiot opponent will still try it, and sometimes it works because the AI MAKES YOU TURN AROUND IN A CIRCLE AND START RUNNING AGAIN? EVEN IF YOU ARE CONTROLLING THE PLAYER! ARE YOU KIDDING?
5. Often times when there is a turnover the camera won't center around the ball, so you can have possession of the ball, but you can't see what is ahead of you, because the screen literally only shows 2 inches in front of the player.
Misc. rants... Why the fuck is patrice fucking evra able to muscle Dempsey and Altidore off the ball when they have their back to them? Why do people sit their and make me watch the replay of their shit goal? Why did they change chip shots yet again?
Feel free to post your own rants/experiences with online games, or advice for coping with the rage. I feel a lot better now.

Anyways, I'm guessing it's still made by EA? The quality of their games have gone down over the past decade even if it is Fifa World Cup

Yeah bad AI is really annoying. A lot of games have really terrible AI and it makes the game horrible. Allow me to offer another example. Tried playing NBA Live before. Just pass the ball to the superstar and let him drive in and dunk over anyone. The computer offers absolutely zero resistance.

the things u describe could be said about every fifa game in the last 10 years. and complaining about it sounds like noob whining. if you say you loose because of bad AI, do you imply that your opponents AI is better? SC has bad AI too thats why people with good micro have an edge over the ones with bad micro, in fifa its similar.
And its also understandable why these games are so bad, because people buy fifa games every year and the WC game too no matter if its practically the same game with a new name (like fifa 10 and world cup 10 for example). so why should EA bother making their games better when they will be sold anyway?
Thats what makes me angry, people who buy this series since 10 years and every year they bitch about how bad it is but they still buy the next one.
Some tipps if you have problems wit chipped thru passes:
1.you should look at the custom tactics of your team and check if it works better if you put the defensive agression a bit lower and the pressure too. and maybe even use cover instead of offside trap. idk whats standard for USA.
2.rarely use slide tackles, stand tackle is much safer imo
3. make a custom formation where your IBs run back when defending

First bold: I usually play with the US, so any mistake that I make is very unforgiving. Almost everyone else is France/Spain/Brazil etc. If they make a mistake, there players can make up for it. If I make a mistake because I can't switch over to a player quick enough, my player doesn't have the speed to come back.
Second bold: It's nothing to do with tactics or anything. I am controlling the defensive player the entire time. It has to do with an animation where at certain angles of chipped through balls the defender must turn to look at the ball, then turn forward again. This time allows for the forward to run onto the through ball. It's been in the game for 2 years now, since FIFA 09 at least.
I am very good at the game. I won my like 10 or so online games with USA. Then I did an online world cup tourney and made it to the round of 8 with Barbados (half star team LOL). I've played hundreds of games in previous versions. It's just extremely frustrating because I want to play a competitive skillful game of Fifa, but the game is just extremely luck based when two evenly matches players play. Online if there is any lag at all, it greatly affects the game. And if you get unlucky pinball bounces, the game can turn very quickly. In real life the bounces can usually even out, but online the games are too short.

well its true if u play with USA u will have a hard time to win against Spain etc. but thats your choice, and you cant expect EA to make USA as good as the top teams ;-)
Its although true that the game is somewhat luck based. i had many games too where i was dominating the player with 60%+ possesion and 15 shots on goal (hitted the bar about 7 times) compared to 2 shots on goal that my opponent made and i lost these games 0-2. But sometimes football is just like that even in real life. I dont really care about that but probably im used to it because of poker wich is still far more luck based than fifa :-)
What you say about lag is really frustrating i dont understand why EA fucks up their online mode every year that much (on consoles at least). The most annoying thing was that they didnt do anything about ragequitters for a long time and you could just quit when u were behind and you didnt get a loss.
2 years ago you even had the possibility to switch to ProEvo if you didnt like Fifa but today ProEvo is even worse than Fifa. :-( (Because they too started to spend their money for licenses rather than spending money for game development)

Yeah, I used to play pro evo exclusively up until Fifa 09. Such great games. Really nostalgic thinking about them! Oh wells I'm all calmed down now.

How the fuck does the AI decide to turn around????
They are sprinting back and when i get control of them, I am sure my controls are set to keep them sprinting towards the net yet they decide to turn around, lose their speed, and lose the attacker. ASDG SAR YH SHAS HASE DJAEK ARJK

I can't comment for the any of the other franchises, but the NHL games have progressively gotten more awesome to the point where I actually can't wait for the next iteration.

I don't know how you can whine when everybody is in the same situation. If you want competition in a football game then you won't be able to find it at a high level because they are all too luck based, like you say.
Or you can just pick a good team and stop complaining that your players are too slow or that your mistakes are unforgiving.
Also, I don't think raging ever helps anyone's game. It clouds your judgement.

#3, you can change the speed at which the player change happens in settings. I've been doing this since like 06 FIFA because default's fucking terrible.

To poster above. I play with USA because I love our players and have a lot of national pride.
The settings you mention for switching players is already turned off for me. I do everything manually, there is just a built in latency the game has when switching players

1. If there are mistakes that affect everyone, that sucks and they should be fixed in the game. Why should it be impossible to reduce the luck factor in a football game? Real games have lots of luck involved yes, but the collisions bounces in FIFA are way over the top. I don't see why they couldn't tweak those down a bit.
2. I don't care if I lose because my team is slower or less skilled and my opponent abuses that. That is what they should do. I get pissed when the game won't let me control me team.

The luck factor increases the enjoyment for most people because it levels the playing field a little. Bad players can get lucky and beat better players. I don't think it's as simple as just tweaking the physics of the game to reduce the luck element of one specific situation.
You know the game is flawed, yet you still play it and complain and get angry about it. This is what I don't understand.
