So I have been playing the beta for 3 days now and have reached rank 1 in my division. + Show Spoiler + I've never gotten higher than D+ on ICCup but still it only took me three days to get highest rank in my division. I'm very surprised about how easy it was to get this high in the ranking, I really thought that there would be a lot more good players at the top since it seemed like BW had loads of players who were a lot better than me.
I have no idea about how one is able to be as low a copper or something like that, you would have to not make a single unit or something. The skill ceiling seems to be incredibly low atm.
I didn't really think that such things as mechanics were a plus to a game before I played SC2. I have always thought that BW was too hard mechanically since there are just so many funny strategies that could be pulled of but its simply not humanly possible. Even Jaedong cant incorporate queens in his army since its just so hard to pull of. Even though ensnare is a very use full ability against pretty much all races. So I think it would be great if a game such as BW gets are more newb friendly successor, but it just seems like a complete noob fest to me. Even I can macro fine off four bases.
This atleast seems to be my first impression of the game. I really hope that these concerns will show to be meaningless when top players start to figure the game out for real. I really hope that SC2 is going to be a huge success with a super high skill ceiling, so I'm anxious to see how the game will be at release. For now I'm just going to keep playing this game because its so much fun :D it definitely holds a lot of potential, but please make this game a game were the best players in the world get to be on TV so I can look in awe. Everything else would be so sad.

Really platinum ranking does not mean shit. What is better for evaluation of your skill is your ELO rating. I'm around 1300 and cruising in the 30-40's. It gets harder.

Many Blizzard fans registered for beta keys and got them. They probably aren't used to the level of mechanics needed in the SC series. I think anyone who can macro at a D+/C- level has the mechanical skill to make it into a platinum league. As for being number one, you likely got placed into a platinum league without other good players.

Surprised you made it there with that rating / record...in my division, rank 1 is like 2050 rating >_>

@OP
How did you do on your placement matches? 5-0 ?

#1 in mine is 1950~, I'm sitting at 1700+

Copper is for players who are just picking up the game. Like, you pull in a random friend and make him play the game while telling him what to do. He'll end up in copper. There are many things you take for granted at a D level player such as using hotkeys and macroing decently that's extremely hard for a complete newbie who's coming from, say, WoW. I agree that the skill ceiling is low, but I think it was meant to be low, since the game is supposed to bring together the pros, the low money map players, the BGH players, the FPM players, the UMS players, the WC3 players, the CS players, the DotA players, the WoW players, the casual gamers, etc. all together in one ladder.

Sorry to say this but you did get a bit lucky

the way its set up, new divisions keep opening up within plat so the new players that come in only have 1k rating. And they are younger so it takes a while for that division to mature

Being #1 in your division is basically meaningless...

Also, it seems like you haven't hit your skill ceiling yet, which will definitely happen since there are many experienced players in the higher levels of platinum. If you can get to 2000+ ELO, you can, as a D+ iCCup player, honestly say that SC2 has a low skill ceiling. Otherwise, I don't think so...

...unless you're #1 in copper. Means you're really bad.

That ELO is nothing special and besides, the ladder right now is pretty easy as anybody with ANY iccup broodwar experience is in platinum. I'm rank 18 plat too with a decent (1400) ELO but I was still raped by people like kawaiirice when I faced them in placement.

Like everyone else has said, sitting at 1290 ELO is really low, and only equalivalent to #40 in my division. That means you are not even playing any of the good players yet, and probably not even any decent ones either. Once you get to 1600 you start facing competent players, and anything over 1800 becomes quite a challenge. At 1290 plat you are probably still playing gold players as well =\

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else. Divisions don't matter too much, what really matters is the ELO. I am around 1600, and the people I play now compared to when I was around 1300 are much much much better.
