It seems like I'm always coming back. I play a lot for a few weeks then slowly reduce my game time until I quit for weeks, only to come back again. It seems that if I would just keep playing a lot for a longer time, I'd be far better than I am now.
So many players have started playing after I have, and I destroy them for a while, then a few months later they'll be clearly better than me.
I've just started another comeback, mostly because of SC2, but how long will it last? I seem to always end up convincing myself to focus more on other things. I'm thinking I should try to get some motivating wins (tourneys, F2F, etc.) and then maybe I'll keep it up.
How do you suggest I stop this cycle?

Question is why would you want to stop? Do you want to dedicate your time (life) to videogame and be SC2 pro? Then you should stop it. Do you want to have fun? Then just play when you feel like playing and enjoy it.
(ye i know, being better thus beating more players is also fun)

Well, that's been my mindset all this time, to play to have some fun, but this didn't get me as far as I wanted to go. Sometimes you gotta play even though you're not having fun, because, as you said, later on you'll be better and enjoy the game more by winning.

If the reason you don't enjoy playing for long stretches of time is because it is too demanding/demotivating/difficult, then I would suggest watching more VODs, playing more UMS, and finding ways to spice up your SC experience so you don't get too stressed over the game.

buy a mac
it will kill any desire to play sc instantly.
If it doesn't, the lack of AH/Chaoslauncher will make you quit cold turkey
