Hi, I am a Sophomore in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, studying Industrial and Operations Engineering.
I'm looking for some advice on some things that I've been thinking about lately. So I'm torn between a couple of choices for the next couple of years... Although I'm studying IOE right now and I'm doing a decent job with it, I'm trying to decide if I want to switch over to architecture and whether it is plausible.
So I went to an engineering-focus high school and I'm in the college of engineering right now, so I have a pretty good handle of how things go in terms of engineering. More recently, I've been developing an interest in architecture, probably because my mom is an architect/interior design Ph.D and she's taught me how to thinking about structures of buildings/interiors as I was growing up. I guess you can say that I have somewhat of a passion for architecture, and I have a natural ability to be able to analyze buildings and such (again, from my mom "training" me as I was growing up).
To be completely honest, I am afraid that I won't have the artistic ability/creativity necessary to be a good architect if I jump into architecture right now. There IS an undergraduate architecture at Michigan that I am seriously considering right now, but I am not sure if I should actually go for it. I guess I'm afraid that it may be a little too late to switch over at this point in my college career, since I've been on the engineering track for so long.
With that background in mind.. I have a couple of ideas on how I could integrate architecture into my life:
1) sticking with Industrial and Operations Engineering degree for undergrad and going for architecture school during grad school.
(Pro: solid engineering base Con: I may be unprepared for the graduate school level courses in architecture)
2) going for undergrad architecture degree, going for Civil Engineering / Architecture Dual degree (there is a joint program between the grad schools, so it works out)
(Pro: build architecture base in undergrad, incorporate both into grad school studies. Cons: will cost a lot of money being in school for so long...)
3) Something else available? someone suggest some things..
Please shed some light on this matter =( I'm really torn and I have to pick my classes very very soon...

one of my friends on the UM table tennis team is in the UM architecture grad program right now, if you want i can give you his contact info if you want to talk to him

Noone can TELL you what you should to do in college. The best advice anyone can ever give you is major in something you love. You'll get better grades, learn the material more fully and easily, and actually enjoy classes. If you have a passion for architecture, go with that. Idk anything about IOE but most majors have a ton of electives, use them for architecture stuff if you really want the IOE degree.

Course counsellors are the ones to talk to. They will know so much more about your different options than most outsiders. I would talk to HotBid's friend in the architecture grad program, he can probably give you some real world advice on what it means to go into architecture.

We have a CSL team?
I was going to create one with my friend who used to be top player in US (Neo)Crazy) or something like that.. he's still around heh

Two questions you have to ask yourself:
1. Is a switch possible, in terms of not only just credits and external limitations but your personal ones like money, time, etc.?
2. Do you want to spend the rest of your life thinking "if only I majored in architecture in college"?
It sounds like you've thought it through somewhat but not to the most detailed you could be. And even then, if you decide that IOE is the safer route logically but denies your passion for architecture, fuck it anyway and go with architecture.

I will go with option #1, finish the IOE first then do the Architecture. Probably will be hard but if you love it you will be happy to work your ass off to pull it off plus you will be proud once you finish.

If you are accepted as a PhD, you don't pay tuition. The department usually pays for the tuition PLUS a monthly stipend. I am currently a 1st year in Carnegie Mellon's Chemical Engineering PhD program. However, if you are only going for a Master degree, then you have to pay for tuition.

yeah, he doesn't play much anymore.. he gets a headache or something if he plays. I somehow beat him once though =)
