the music in FF7 was better imo but FF8 music is pretty good as well
FF7 story was much better and the character development has not been matched since it's release and the only game that compares is Torment.
FF8 was a commercial version of seven, everything was made very obvious, characters were very stereotypical and so was their so called character development.
I don't hate FF8, i think it's one of the better rpgs out there but to throw it up there with the best shows that either it was one of the first rpgs you ever played and thus got attached to it, or that you haven't played the other rpgs you are comparing it to.
ultimecia definatly isnt rinoa of the future noone can prove it! btw search for "the black mages"(nobuo uematsu band) remakes of finalfantasy (8 included) songs. they're awesome i <3 them examples: + Show Spoiler +
Final Fantasy 8 has the worst RPG storyline of all time. I almost just quit when they had the storyline "revelations" of disc 3. Add that with the terribly written romance where Rinoa throws herself at Squall and Squall randomly changes to be receptive halfway through the game..
One of the more poorly designed battle systems as well. You could win ez pz just playing the card game and junctioning end game spells to yourself a half hour in. And forcing players to draw spells and punishing them by penalizing them for using them...really fun.
I can at least understand why people think FF7 is the best because of nostalgia, because that one does have a lot of redeeming qualities, even if it's really not. But 8 and 9 are the worst games of the series.
I thought the setting/music/characters of Final Fantasy 8 all had potential, but if you play through the game nothing is developed convincingly. All the game's values are at a surface level, which makes for a very tedious and boring RPG experience.
Also, there's no subtext or hidden meanings buried in the game. It's amusing that people are coming up with theories to try and make the game seem like it was something substantial.
I don't mean to spoil the feeling but can someone explain to me why FF8 was so special? Honestly, the dialogue and story made NO sense whatsoever. It was like they translated all the dialogue through Google translator.
Also FFIX was magnificent too. I played that game through more than any other human and I believe I know it better than anybody (I know all the mistakes in both the official walkthrough and the online guides). It was like the perfect counterpoint to FFVII. Where 7 was dark, 9 was light and childlike. Where 7 shows you loss and tragedy 9 gave you miraculous escapes and happy endings. The story itself was decent and the the junctioning spirit points (is that what they were called) system was original, simple, intuitive and effective. And the minigames, so many minigames. One thing which should be noted is that if you know what you're doing you can make the game very easy for yourself. For example if you go to the Chocobo forest immediately after leaving Lindblum you can get a chocograph near Burmecia which gives you the reef chocobo and a chocograph near Lindblum in the water which gives you Bio (a mid level spell). Gaining access to it in the early parts of disc 1 is incredibly overpowered. The same can be used for meteor in the middle of disc 2. However the difficulty level is appropriate for the first time you play through while rewarding players who seek these things out and creating replayability through the desire to unlock the games secrets. The world is compelling, the theme is light and airy and the overall experience is excellent.

I do admit that it had good music and imagery though.
At least play 9. FFX ended it for me too (well, I bought X-2, gave it away after 2 hours to a friend who also gave it away after 2 hours). If you're ever in the country again imma make you play 8 and 9 with me. Hopefully my enthusiasm will be contagious and if all else fails we can drink while doing it.
Also did you know FFIX is 2 player?!?! Nobody does.
I'm actually just playing through ff8 now, still my favourite rpg of all time. One of the favourite things about it is that I DON'T have to grind like crazy because the junction system and the leveling system just makes it possible (and even easier) to play it at lower levels.
I did enjoy playing FF8, but mostly due to its music, settings, some part of the storyline, and some characters. But the gameplay mechanics are really what put the game blow all the others FFs (didnt play FFX tho). Really, music was pretty good (I LOVE Man with the machine gun).
I'd say the best for me would be 7, 6 then 4, followed by 9. They pretty much had everything FF8 had + a good gameplay. And at least those you can have some challenges if you want, I got the Excalibur II sword in FFIX (weapon not worth it tho, but challenge of completing the game in 24 hours is quite fun), I've been doing a low-level run of FF6 for quite some time (level 12-13 in the middle part of the World of ruin). But FF8 even if you try those thing, you end up with broken mechanics and kill late game boos with level 15-20 characters and they are still a breeze ><
FF8 was indeed a great game. I was always surprised by the fair amount of hate but I think over the years it has gained a lot more supporters then haters.
I have the exact same reaction whenever I hear music from Skies of Arcadia, my first RPG other than pokemon. That game was so good, yet they are never going to make a sequel for it. It makes me sad .
FF8 is the better game compared to 7(imo^^). Combat was fun with squall with the trigger pull gimmick and I also had a lot of fun with smashing square to up my summons damage (weird I know). Finding summons was another plus. Cactar on the island and getting the Thornberry summon ( names are off memory so probably wrong) are memorable for me because you had to defeat the summon. Then there was the card game. Had fun playing that while not trying to popularize the hard regional rules.
I like romance stories so I am a little biased. ( ones where the chick everyone likes doesn't die.) Remember looking up how to resurrect Aries by beating the game 7 times ( lalala )
The best part of FF7 was probably the beginning because it had very dark themes throughout Midgar and Square did a good job in adding a lot of character into the dialogue. I would say disc 1 of FF7 is the most memorable.
( PS. When I think of FF8 I hear Garden music lol ) I never did get a hotdog out of the cafeteria.

Ooh, watching that just gave me tingles too.. or maybe I got the tingles because I've been holding my piss in for the last 15 minutes. FF9 definitely tops FF8 IMHO. FF9 had the best soundtrack after FF6.
