I've been listening to FF8 music on youtube tonight and it's making me feel so nostalgic, I just felt the need to make this blog and show my absolute love and appreciation for this masterpiece of a videogame.
I have to say, regardless of how much dislike there is for FF8 compared to all other FF's, this is one of my top 3 favorite games of all time, if not my most favorite.
Everything about it is so amazing. I love the setting/world it's set in. Something just clicked with me, with the futuristic, but yet not too sci-fi theme. I also really loved the entire story. There's a lot of stuff that is really subtle that you don't even pick up on until you go and read about it on the internet, like the whole + Show Spoiler +
Ultimecia/time compression thing with Rinoa possibly being Ultimecia from the future. If you haven't read about that, go look for it and read about it, it's pretty awesome :D
There are so many defining parts of this game that I remember when I first played it. Everything about it was so magical and spectacular. All of the diverse locations in the game were so fantastic and had such strong moods/settings to them. Things like the place where you get Odin and fight the Tonberry King, that place was so surreal and creepy! The Deep Sea Research Center where you get Bahamut and then later go back in further underground to find Ultima Weapon and get the Eden summon from him. I really loved Timber and Dollet, too. I loved the small town setting of them, and being on a secret SeeD mission in Timber, it was all so awesome. ^_^
And the music, my god the music! It is some of the most amazing music I have ever heard. Every single song, no matter how little it was used in the game, is SO amazing and well made, and fits every location and scene perfectly. One of my lesser known favorite songs EVER is called Silence And Motion. It's the song that plays while you are in Esthar (before you go up into space). It's so quirky and epic at the same time. (Here's a link to the song).
The main reason why I love this game so much and I get so nostalgic every time I hear its songs or think about it is the fact that it was one of the first RPGs I ever played. To quote someone else, to sum up exactly how I feel: "This game defines my childhood. The music is the pillar that holds everything together to make me so emotionally attached to FFVIII, along with the story, graphics and everything else." I remember getting a Playstation + FF8 for my birthday in November, right around the time when the game first came out, and I spent every day after school playing it all the way up until christmas. I remember even one day, I was so sick with the flu, and had such a high fever, that I couldn't even make it to school. I had to stay home, and my mom's rule was that I couldn't play videogames when I was sick. So all day I was so sad that I couldn't play and I was so bored. But then as a present to make me feel better from being sick, my dad went to the store on his way home from work and bought me the FF8 Strategy guide. It made me so happy. ^__^ I read it the rest of the night since I couldn't play, haha.
I really wanted to articulate this a lot more in terms of why this game is so amazing, but I am really tired and can't. ): For anyone who loves this game though you should talk about how amazing it is in here and we can talk about it! I'm thinking about maybe starting to play it again once I have more time after the class I'm taking right now.
Well... I honestly hate FF8, and think it is one of the worst RPGs I've played. However, the Setting of FF8 was good (especially in the beginning), and the music was good as well. However, there were just too many things about the game that made me dislike it.
Like, I couldn't stand the characters. They more or less swapped out "character development" with "personality disorders", IMO. Squall was way too emo, and his emotional change when Rinoa got hurt or something (when he basically carried her on his back all the way to that really futuristic country) just made me give up on his character. Speaking of Rinoa, she was probably the most annoying character in the game.
I really didn't like how the plot progressed, beyond probably like the first quarter of the game. Especially with the stuff about GFs.
Last but not least, I hated the gameplay mechanics. First off, you are more or less punished for leveling up in the game. As you gain levels, so do your enemies, and when enemies gain levels, they learn new spells and stuff. So its easiest just to never level up at all, and to run from most battles.
Junctioning was an incredibly broken system. First, think about my last point. If I don't level up, my enemies don't level up. However, if I go into a battle, and simply sit there and waste my time drawing magic until I can draw no more, or need no more, I can make all of my characters extremely powerful compared to all the other enemies in the game. You just draw magic, run away, junction.
Speaking of magic, they basically turned magic into a different type of item, which I didn't like >_>
Later on, it seemed like you were too dependent on either Summoning GFs, or Limit Breaks. Like I'd go into a boss fight, and either Limit Break the entire thing, or just bombard the boss with summon spells.
All this said, alot of the things I dislike about the game, I've found that people who do like the like it for those very reasons. This is a very love it or hate it game, so even though I disagree, I respect your opinion on it. FF4 best Final Fantasy game tho IMO
@Sentenal, I think one of the main reasons I can overlook so many of the actual battle/junction/gameplay troubles of the game is because at the time I didn't have much experience with RPGs in general, so I had nothing to compare it to. That's probably why I didn't mind it at all. ;P And the story/setting/music just completely overwhelms any flaws that it had in general, at least for me.
I do agree Rinoa was the most annoying character though! Haha. Zell, Irvine, and Selphie were my favorites. : ]

Those 3 were my favorites as well, or at least the ones I had the least problems with. Irvine was an alright character (my favorite of the bunch), but I wish they did more with his character in the game.
I don't how anyone can dislike this game. I played it when I didn't even know a single english word and still finished it thanks to my brother's walkthrough. But my favourite is still FFIX (reason for my username), took me 4 fucking years to complete without a walkthrough till disc 4 when I first knew about the internet's existence. I'm gonna play FF7, 8 and 9 again when I upgrade my onboard video card to a 4670.
FF8 had some amazing music, and a storyline that was quite complex (deep) compared to other games before it. On top of that, the characters were very well developed. In that sense, it was a really great game. However, I think it had an abysmal battle system. Having to spend time stealing magic from enemies, the junctioning garbage for your stats, how you obtained item upgrades, limits being linked to low health but still somewhat random...there were just so many things that were frustrating to play with. If only there was a version with the same storyline and a battle/magic/item system that was less annoying. While the materia system in FF7 was amazing, I would even have been happy with a simple system like that of FF4.
FF7 > FF8 > * >>>>>> AIDS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hillary Clinton > FFX-2
Don't know where FF3 (FF6 in Japan) goes because I never played it, but people say it's really close to FF7 in quality, either a little better, a little worse, or just as good.
That's funny, I've had FF8 music on playlists for years. (Not all this but a lot of it)
1 - Liberi Fatali 3 - Blue Fields 8 - The Landing 12 - Never Look Back 14 - Breezy 15 - Shuffle Or Boogie (lol awesome to play Triple Triad to :D) 16 - Waltz For The Moon 17 - Tell Me 18 - Fear 19 - The Man With The Machine Gun (Orchestral or not, this is badass :D) 20 - Julia 23 - Timber Owls 24 - My Mind 25 - The Mission 26 - Martial Law 29 - Succession Of Witches 30 - Galbadia Garden 31 - Unrest 32 - Under Her Control 33 - The Stage is Set 34 - A Sacrafice 35 - Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec 36 - Intruders 37 - Premonition 39 - Fragments of Memories (Orchestral or not) 40 - Jailed 41 - Rivals 42 - Ami 43 - The Spy (Awesome retro feeling) 45 - Movin (Again.. lol) 47 - Drifting 49 - Fisherman's Horizon (I love this song, again orchestral or not lol) 50 - Odeka Ke Chocobo [+] 51 - Where I Belong 52 - The Oath ( :LSJDF lol orchestral or not) 55 - Love Grows (orchestral or not) 56 - The Salt Flats 57 - Trust Me (god damnit there are too many good songs XD) 58 - Silence And Motion 59 - Dance With The Balambfish (orchestral) 61 - Residents 62 - Eyes On Me (lol I love this song by faye wong XD) 63 - Mods de Chocobo (Come on, any chocobo song is awesome) 64 - Ride On 65 - Truth 67 - Compression of Time 68 - The Castle (... I'll just not say anything more after this until the end!) 69 - The Legendary Beast 70 - Maybe Im a Lion 71 - The Extreme 72 - The Successor 73 - Ending Theme 74 - Overture
Good god, I actually went through and listened to the entire sound track (not every bit of every song but enough to remember which I loved) and this is the list is I compile. Even the ones that didn't make it weren't blatantly disliked, I just tried to prune the list as best as I could. GOSDJFL this game had the perfect music at every point lol. And yeah, FF8 was my favorite.
FF8 fucking sucked so much. The character development was so forced and utter shit. RPGs first and foremost is supposed to give its gamers a REASON to care about them... but man the pathetic piece of shits that were Squall and Rinoa, and the utter idiocy that was the romance, as well as the whore Selphie, all combined in a story that a 3 year old could write... FF8 is the series that really turned me off from ever playing japanese rpgs seriously again. And looking at the character designs for the following ff series, I quit not a moment too late.
storyline wise, i think it just beats 7 and 10 (partly because it has a sweet and happy ending lol). oh, and there are so many memorable scenes, like the dance, the space rescue, squall's promise etc. and i thought ALL the characters were interesting in their own way.
gameplay/battle wise, i think is its only weak point. the drawing, junctioning, gf, are unique and adds a few dynamics to the battle, but really got repetitive for me. materia in 7, the grid/overdrive in 10, gambit/license in 12, i thought are ideas that are more fun to play around with. the card playing was definitely very fun tho (better than blitzball by a mile)
music wise, there is no competition. ff8 stands head and shoulders above the rest. it took me 70 hours to put down ffx (so many extra side quests), but even after that there are only about 10 songs that i found memorable. whereas i can enjoy listening to almost every track on the ff8 soundtrack (which i had to pay $50 for because they dont sell them in aus and i had to get it shipped. but its so worth it...) and each ff8 play through only takes 40 hours for me. every song is unique and beautifully put together. there's a few that shares a melody but even they are arranged to feel different.
i played 4 and 6 as well, but it was too long ago that i dont remember what they are like...
Playstation 1 era was the golden age of jrpg. FF7,8,9 were all incredible games.
It's all about atmosphere and soul, and these games have plenty of that especially 8. I don't remember much about the plot, but definitely remember how it felt to play the game.
Hell Yea. FF8 and FF9 are my absolute favourites. I was so impressed by FF8 as well, consider the difference in looks between FF7 and 8. And I believe FF8 began production just as 7 was being launched. I feel like Square came really far with FF8.
Also can't really stand the trash that is FF10. I hate that game, FF12, I'm pretty ambivalent to really. It's enjoyable, but not really a game I want to play through again. I know I've done atleast 5 clears of FF8 and 9 respectively. Also, all the female characters in FF8 had big tits. Can't rule that out.
XII was the only one I thought was average. All the rest were incredible in their own way.
I actually always preferred IX, but maybe thats just because getting a perfect save in IX was so hard and I'm all about random FF challenges :p
The plot of VIII is amazing when you first start out, cause your characters really feel pretty insignificant to the overall flow of the plot, and then when you play through it a few times and finally work out the really complicated time loop system and the way that Ultimecia is probably Rinoa, the plot becomes alot more interesting.
the music in FF7 was better imo but FF8 music is pretty good as well
FF7 story was much better and the character development has not been matched since it's release and the only game that compares is Torment.
FF8 was a commercial version of seven, everything was made very obvious, characters were very stereotypical and so was their so called character development.
I don't hate FF8, i think it's one of the better rpgs out there but to throw it up there with the best shows that either it was one of the first rpgs you ever played and thus got attached to it, or that you haven't played the other rpgs you are comparing it to.
ultimecia definatly isnt rinoa of the future noone can prove it! btw search for "the black mages"(nobuo uematsu band) remakes of finalfantasy (8 included) songs. they're awesome i <3 them examples: + Show Spoiler +
Final Fantasy 8 has the worst RPG storyline of all time. I almost just quit when they had the storyline "revelations" of disc 3. Add that with the terribly written romance where Rinoa throws herself at Squall and Squall randomly changes to be receptive halfway through the game..
One of the more poorly designed battle systems as well. You could win ez pz just playing the card game and junctioning end game spells to yourself a half hour in. And forcing players to draw spells and punishing them by penalizing them for using them...really fun.
I can at least understand why people think FF7 is the best because of nostalgia, because that one does have a lot of redeeming qualities, even if it's really not. But 8 and 9 are the worst games of the series.
I thought the setting/music/characters of Final Fantasy 8 all had potential, but if you play through the game nothing is developed convincingly. All the game's values are at a surface level, which makes for a very tedious and boring RPG experience.
Also, there's no subtext or hidden meanings buried in the game. It's amusing that people are coming up with theories to try and make the game seem like it was something substantial.
I don't mean to spoil the feeling but can someone explain to me why FF8 was so special? Honestly, the dialogue and story made NO sense whatsoever. It was like they translated all the dialogue through Google translator.
Also FFIX was magnificent too. I played that game through more than any other human and I believe I know it better than anybody (I know all the mistakes in both the official walkthrough and the online guides). It was like the perfect counterpoint to FFVII. Where 7 was dark, 9 was light and childlike. Where 7 shows you loss and tragedy 9 gave you miraculous escapes and happy endings. The story itself was decent and the the junctioning spirit points (is that what they were called) system was original, simple, intuitive and effective. And the minigames, so many minigames. One thing which should be noted is that if you know what you're doing you can make the game very easy for yourself. For example if you go to the Chocobo forest immediately after leaving Lindblum you can get a chocograph near Burmecia which gives you the reef chocobo and a chocograph near Lindblum in the water which gives you Bio (a mid level spell). Gaining access to it in the early parts of disc 1 is incredibly overpowered. The same can be used for meteor in the middle of disc 2. However the difficulty level is appropriate for the first time you play through while rewarding players who seek these things out and creating replayability through the desire to unlock the games secrets. The world is compelling, the theme is light and airy and the overall experience is excellent.

I do admit that it had good music and imagery though.
At least play 9. FFX ended it for me too (well, I bought X-2, gave it away after 2 hours to a friend who also gave it away after 2 hours). If you're ever in the country again imma make you play 8 and 9 with me. Hopefully my enthusiasm will be contagious and if all else fails we can drink while doing it.
Also did you know FFIX is 2 player?!?! Nobody does.
I'm actually just playing through ff8 now, still my favourite rpg of all time. One of the favourite things about it is that I DON'T have to grind like crazy because the junction system and the leveling system just makes it possible (and even easier) to play it at lower levels.
I did enjoy playing FF8, but mostly due to its music, settings, some part of the storyline, and some characters. But the gameplay mechanics are really what put the game blow all the others FFs (didnt play FFX tho). Really, music was pretty good (I LOVE Man with the machine gun).
I'd say the best for me would be 7, 6 then 4, followed by 9. They pretty much had everything FF8 had + a good gameplay. And at least those you can have some challenges if you want, I got the Excalibur II sword in FFIX (weapon not worth it tho, but challenge of completing the game in 24 hours is quite fun), I've been doing a low-level run of FF6 for quite some time (level 12-13 in the middle part of the World of ruin). But FF8 even if you try those thing, you end up with broken mechanics and kill late game boos with level 15-20 characters and they are still a breeze ><
FF8 was indeed a great game. I was always surprised by the fair amount of hate but I think over the years it has gained a lot more supporters then haters.
I have the exact same reaction whenever I hear music from Skies of Arcadia, my first RPG other than pokemon. That game was so good, yet they are never going to make a sequel for it. It makes me sad .
FF8 is the better game compared to 7(imo^^). Combat was fun with squall with the trigger pull gimmick and I also had a lot of fun with smashing square to up my summons damage (weird I know). Finding summons was another plus. Cactar on the island and getting the Thornberry summon ( names are off memory so probably wrong) are memorable for me because you had to defeat the summon. Then there was the card game. Had fun playing that while not trying to popularize the hard regional rules.
I like romance stories so I am a little biased. ( ones where the chick everyone likes doesn't die.) Remember looking up how to resurrect Aries by beating the game 7 times ( lalala )
The best part of FF7 was probably the beginning because it had very dark themes throughout Midgar and Square did a good job in adding a lot of character into the dialogue. I would say disc 1 of FF7 is the most memorable.
( PS. When I think of FF8 I hear Garden music lol ) I never did get a hotdog out of the cafeteria.

Ooh, watching that just gave me tingles too.. or maybe I got the tingles because I've been holding my piss in for the last 15 minutes. FF9 definitely tops FF8 IMHO. FF9 had the best soundtrack after FF6.

I dislike FF8 because it's a freaking awful game.
No really FF8 and FFX-2 are the only two FF's I ever had a real problem with. FF8's characters grated me the wrong way, the general game play was a step down compared to FF7, and so on and so on. I always felt FF8 was too.. generic? Yea generic is the word i'd use.
I don't consider FF7 the holy grail that other people claim it to be but FF7 had a better story, better magic system, better everything but graphics and that's just because it came out before FF8 did. Aerith actually dying is pretty much a pinnacle part of why FF7 has such a good story line.
FF8's decent story wasn't enough for me to ignore the horrible gameplay. It usually is for people that loved it though.
I dunno I still honestly don't mind the junction system and magic system haha. ;\ I think I'm insanely biased though. I guess for me it's like, since I love everything else about the game SO much, I actually enjoy having a system that's so easy to exploit like the junction system is to make the game easier so I can spend more time enjoying the music/story/setting etc. ;P
Going to troll this thread and say: Shin Megami Tensei series > Final Fantasy series.
In all seriousness though, I have very odd opinions when it comes to JRPGs. IMO FF4/5/6 > FF7 > FF9 > FF8. FF4/5/6 generally feel more revolutionary as they actually work out the fundamentals of how ATB-based combat works in general. Future games feel like they just have gimmicky permutations of that, and make you wonder what was wrong with simple class-based advancement that they had to change it. 7, while good, is generally overrated IMO. It has a solid plot, but the characters generally feel like they fit too closely to their respective archetypes--variation from norms creates more interesting character development IMO. FF9 gets my thumbs up over FF8 for that--the feel of FF9 just generally feels more unique, and the characters more interesting. Oh, and level-scaling. Level-scaling pissed me off in FF8.
Oh, and Final Fantasy Tactics is hands down the best Final Fantasy game.
I was able to get into all the FF games. FF9 I had the most trouble getting into, though. The last one on PS2 was a little rough at times as well. I really did like 8 still. Any game with a good story I can easily get into. Still, It goes 7, 3(the SNES version for the US), then 8 or 10. Everyone ragged on 10 a lot too, but I thought it had a solid story behind it despite all of Tidus' whining.
I always found the FF games to be too long. I only finished FF4 and FF6, started FF7, 8, 9 and 10, and never finished those lol. I think if I were to pick one and finish it, it would be FF9. I'm just a sucker for the child-like cheerful theme and the theater introduction was pretty fun to play. Zidane was just more likable right from the start too.

Nah, SNES was the Golden Age of JRPGs.
FF4, FF5, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2), Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, and probably more I've forgetting.
Anyway, FF4 will always be my favorite, because it more or less invented the modern JRPG, since it actually had defined characters, and a flowing coherent storyline. FF6 was excelent too, it basically took everything from previous RPGs, and made them better, more or less. Chrono Trigger had probably the best battle system of any RPG ever released, and the story and characters were very enjoyable.
Not much love for FF6, it's my favorite! Suikoden series are excellent too. I hated FF8 at first but I got used to it, it's really cool in theory but the overall gameplay just seems to lack a little bit(junctioning.)
I wanted to finish the game but somehow my fourth disc is lost? Humbug.

Because Tactics isn't in the true essence of the FF series that's why it was placed with the "tactics" tag. If you like the one odd-ball game out of the series of the games that all follow the turn based-RPG style then what I say is true.

Uh, again, saying that I like Tactics BETTER than the other FF games says nothing about how much I like the rest. It doesn't matter how different it is, saying that it's better is only a relative qualification.

don't listen to jayson, he's dumb.
Tactics is a completely different genre than the other FFs.... it's a strategy game, like starcraft (only turn-based and makes mathematics the divine path)
Kinda like mario games and mario rpg. ^_^'
So, don't compare it with the rest of the rps.
Uematsu has made the music for every last FF game out there, ya?
All I remember was being told: "You can kill the T-Rex if you junction properly" and I could never do it. I think I was too young when I played that game to understand the complex junction system. Maybe I'll go back and retry it.
You said tactics was the best meaning you like that play style better then the original FF play style which is turn based style and not "tactics" style. To say the one tactics style game is better then the original style seems a bit insulting to the series. The game wasn't in the true spirit of the series except for the story, I suppose. Saying you don't like the series probably wasn't right, but liking the one odd-ball game out of the original line of the series doesn't quite add up for me.

Not so. I consider Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, for example, to be pretty terrible compared to most of the traditional Final Fantasy games. A game doesn't get cool points just for fitting a certain style of play for me. I say Tactics is better because IMO it's better across several fronts that apply to all of them, regardless of style--encounter design, class advancement, character development, etc.
FF8 was my first Final Fantasy game, so I love it for the nostalgia. There's a lot of subtle hints and foreshadowing in the game that I never picked up on my first play through, so the game becomes much more amazing when I find these bits and understand more of the story. While FF8 might not be able to compare against FF7, I still believe it to be a great game in its own right.
ff8 is an amazing game. and such wonderful music. I don't think that there are many games where the music makes up so much of what a lot of people remember about them.
I know ff8 is good because I loved it and a lot of people hated it. That means its something.
I loved the plot, the characters, the music, and most of all: the gf/junctioning system. at first it confused me but its not hard to maneuver at all, and setting it up/messing with it rewards preparation and thinking.
I loved playing around with the junction system, dont understand why everyone hates it. Its not like you had to draw magic either, since you could easily refine tons of good magic from items, by using the GF ability. I think it was pretty cool, allthough I didnt like the "futuristic" setting.
My personal favourite is FFIX, just because it owns so fucking much it makes me cry.

Yeah, it was like pouring salt over the wounds some fans had over FFX's ending, and making what was a decent ending significantly worse. FFX-2 was terrible in every way, other than gameplay. I mean, it was all so bad that I didn't even WANT to play it, regardless of the actual gameplay.
Still pretty shitty plot if you ask me. What I enjoyed with that movie was to finaly put a voice to every character, and it was pretty much what I thought it would be...Rude and Rufus owned everything.
