Ok so here's what I've been up to this week. Thanks for all the kind words in the first blog guys, really helped me
What have I been up too each day this week? + Show Spoiler [Monday] +50 minute walk 5,5KM Planned on a 1 hour walk, but since I didn't know what route to take it ended up being shorter.
+ Show Spoiler [Tuesday] +55 minute walk 6,5KM Really tired and I'm actually realizing how addicted I am to fastfood. I really REALLY want a burger right now. But I'm not giving up on the 2nd day, no way. Got a lesson with incontrol tonight, and after that I'm gonna go for another walk.
+ Show Spoiler [Wednesday] +Sick like a dog, woke up this morning and could barely walk because of the fever. Typical!
+ Show Spoiler [Thursday] +Another sick day, I don't care how hig the fever is tomorrow, I'll pop pills and take a walk!
+ Show Spoiler [Friday] +20 minute walk 2,5KM I am still sick but said "fuck it" took out the strongest shit I could find in the medicine closet and went for a shorter walk. Felt good to get fresh air after being in bed for two days. I'm back baby!
+ Show Spoiler [Saturday] +40 minute walk No distance this time, my phone ran out of battery. Didnt think I'd have time to fit a walk into the schedule but I did and I am happy that I did.
+ Show Spoiler [Sunday] +I was first thinking about adding a lie here "I was just to tired" but today I was simply to lazy. Was a late night yesterday so I decided to say "fuck it". Need to work on that. btw, Studio 60 on the sunset strip is the best hangover show ever.
And everything added together + Show Spoiler [Total] +Time: 2h 45min Distans walking: 15,5KM + unknown 40 mins Distans swimming: 0m
What will I do next week? + Show Spoiler [Goals for next week] +Time: 6 hours Walking: 4 hours Swimming: 2 hours
And, as promised, a picture! + Show Spoiler [Current pic] +
So that's it, week one has really been up and down for me. Being sick two days and that short walk on the third day felt like it killed my lungs a little bit so hopefully this was just a bad week and by powering trough I hope my next week will get easier!
Cya in a week!

|
Gogogo! :D
Don't worry, usually when you start doing something more physically demanding than your usual routine, you can get sick more easily, but once you get it rolling, it will be a lot less common. Just keep it up!
You can take a break one day if you feel your muscles are hurting though, they do need to recover. The "real" training routines are usually made so that you have 3 of them in the week, and at least one day of rest between two. But since this is "just" walking, walk when you feel well, even on two consecutive days.
And no laziness, just the power of Will!

why would you want to lose weight??? put on 25lbs imo

wtf.....

Nice initiative julmust. However, know that nutrition is probably the most important thing for weight loss although exercise of course is awesome too.
You should try spinning too, it's a great way to exercise and it doesn't put pressure on your knees like running does.
Eat lots of protein and fat and less carbs. Stay at around 2000 kcal for a smooth weight loss

He might be talking kilograms.

Need to look into the food situation, this week I haven't had any junkfood but that's saying that the rest of the food was healthy. Anyway, brb taking a picture!

Ever thought of jump roping? It's really awesome!

Walking isn't excersise. Did you even measure your heart rate while walking? 5,5km in 50 minutes is a regular walking pace - it is not going to help you lose weight and have better cardio.
You need to do some aerobics at home - even 5 minutes of running would be better than a walk. You need to start swimming ASAP.

Yeah and I'll lose my knees after a week. People has to understand this fact: I am really overweight. My current weight is probably 140kg+ (300+ pounds), why dont I know my exact weight? Cause my scale at home doesnt go that high. I CANNOT start running it will KILL my knees in the first week.

Walking 5,5km in 50 minutes burns about 250 calories per kilometer for me being as heavy as I am. I am going to start swimming aswell, but saying it's not helping me at all to burn around 1250 calories extra a day just isnt gonna cut it. And I'm not looking for a fast weightloss. I'm looking to drop 1-2 kg per week. That way I get a controled weightloss while I'm changing my everyday bad habits. By taking it slow until I lose enough weight so I can start to run I'm giving myself a better chanse then if I go out, swim for 3-4 hours a day, lose alot of weight and then fall back into the same trap again.
Oh and walking is exercise.

Nice work so far, it's great to see you trying to change to a healthier lifestyle
I lost about 9 pounds in the last 2 months and plan on keeping it up!

Stopped reading. I'm sorry, but you are horrifically misled.

Dude, fuck jump roping, that's cardio fitness, a completely different area(and totally inappropriate), when you're just trying to burn fat. you have the right idea with walking and swimming for now, stick to it man - it shows that you feel good about it since you can be honest about occasional lack of effort.

Wow nice!! Keep it up man!! And ignore Sadistx.

Awesome start! When are you planning to incorporate muscle-building exercises? You are actually in some senses in a good position for it--because you are significantly overweight, and because you were not very active before, you can probably burn fat and build muscle simultaneously. For most people who already work out or are in reasonable shape this isn't possible.
|
keep it up man. and don't go lazy, walk every day We're here to cheer you, let's see how you look after a month, or let's say after six months :D
This is my (almost) daily routine:
-30-40 minute excericebiking (set on the toughest level) and lifting hand weights at the same time (I'm always really really swetty after this)
-random amount of pull ups during the day (but always in sets of at least 15 repetition, depends on how tired my arms are)
-different kind of ab excercises
-don't know what this is called in english: + Show Spoiler +but I do them too in sets of 20 few times a day
I'm not trying really to lose weight or trying to get oversized muscles, just work out at home to keep myself fit for the ladies and as a student the gyms are too expensive here for me. i'm about 173cm/68kg

nice man keep it up! your doing a good job.

This entirely depends on his muscle mass vs bodyfat%.
He does sound skinny but there's nothing wrong with losing excess fat.
You are all thinking in american sizes I think.

Nice start and good luck. I have to second the people saying various forms of cycling is good. It is really easy on the body and you can easily hold a fatburning heartrate for hours even as a novice. Dowside is price (assuming you want something that wont break right away) plus the swedish climate. I guess cross country skiing is good too but kinda hard to learn. Atleast I think it is hard to learn coz I've been skiing since I was a kid so it's kinda hard to tell.

You are very mistaken about how many calories walking burns. I would say you burn about 300 kcal (tops) all in all walking 5,5 km at decent pace if you weigh 100 + kg. Definately not 250 kcal per km. Hell, when I run 10km I burn about 800-900 kcal.
Yeah, swimming is good so definately take that up. You will get in shape in no time if you swim and eat well.
Walking is imo not really exercise unless you walk at a fast pace for like an hour. The term exercise when talking about cardio should be reserved for something that actually makes your heart pump fast and that tires you. Walking is something natural that everyone should do in their daily lives.
But of course you have to start somewhere and walks are a good start!

If OP isn't used to physical activity walking is probably not a bad way to start at all. Swimming is ideal as it should avoid the injury risks of running. It is like load free exercise.
Edit: Oh well now you go and change it and make my post irrelevant! :p

I've started on walking too (since I am unable to do running due to that health problem.) You're definitely doing a more comprehensive job than I am! Good luck and keep at it.

Relative to sitting in a chair and eating burgers all day, yes it's excersise. Relative to running/swimming it isn't. I should have been more clear on that. Oh and ignore scyper and Shallow. I mean if you want to lose weight and not just listen to the circlejerkers telling you you're a hero for walking.
There's plenty of people who walk the same distance in a week as you just as part of their daily routines - i.e. from the building to the parking lot.
I don't want to diminish your efforts, because it takes a lot of willpower to start (it took me 3 years to start weight training - lol), but I'll reserve my praise for when we see progress here
PS: like Foucalt said, swimming is a great way to start, because you arent likely to get any joint injuries or split shins or w/e that you might have from running.

back off julmust is my weightloss buddy ^^
edit for my update: No picture this week I forgot my camera at work lol but in addition to playing table tennis for 2 hours a day 4 days this week I played 3 on 3 basketball for an hour and a half. Current weight: 156.0lbs(70.76kg) Overall Goal: 140lbs(63.50kg) I'm really looking to just burn my excess fat if I end up weighing closer to 150 with more muscle I won't be bothered by that. Height:5 feet 7 inches(1.70 meters) Next Week's Goals: I have a huge research paper to get done by Thursday so I really don't think I can exercise much this week so being realistic if I can lose 2 lbs(.9kg) by next Sunday I will be happy.
edit #2 this post turned me into a zergling from a lowly drone!!!!!!!!

You actually burn roughly the same number of calories walking for a given distance as running, it simply takes longer. Obviously running is better for your heart health/lung capacity/cardiovascular system, but in terms of purely losing weight, it's the distance that matters.
Obviously, if you're cutting for a bodybuilding show or something walking is even better since with less intensity you're more likely to be burning fat. In OP's case I don't really think it matters much.
|
OP should be weighing himself regularly as well
|
wow you're fat
keep it up man the second week is always the hardest

Dude I can't speak to why the others reacted as they did to your post, but I got really upset but not because what you are writing, but because you come into the topic like this: FUCK YOU MAN YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE DOING, YOU NEED TO FUCKING START RUNNING CAUSE RUNNING IS LIKE DA BOMB MAN
and I don't listen to people like that, and your statement about "running 5 minutes is better then walking for an hour" is just a uneducated guess from your side. there are alot of people who chose walking to LOSE WEIGHT, you're confusing what I'm trying to do with getting in shape, ie. improving my stamina or building muscles, that's not what I am aiming for here. What I am aiming for is to lose weight, I have no intention what so ever to start going to a gym to shape my body.
Now since you seem to be into "weight-training", as you so nicely put it, let me ask you this: if I wanted long muscles instead of short bulky ones, what would you reccomend?
Nevermind, shit was a rethorical question, the answer is: work out longer but with lower intensity. Same goes for losing weight: I need to stay active for a longer period of time. walking slower might actually IMPROVE the amount of calories I'm burning.
So please gtfo out my blog, I don't want "circlejerks" but I definatly don't want assholes like yourself around.

holy god julmust just went super saiyan on sadist. Seriously though please keep your comments on target I think it's kind of mean for all of the "You're Fat" jokes in here he knows he's overweight he doesn't need you guys to be fucks about it the whole point is to show the process of him losing weight and hopefully it will encourage others to actually lose weight. It already worked for me.

He explicitly stated that his knees wouldn't be able to handle running at this point. It's a logical progression that you have to make in order to improve. What seems like nothing to you has a great chance of being relatively difficult to someone without your training background.
I bet you the huge-ass mofuckas in your gym don't look at you, grunting when you're squeezing out those last few reps on the bench, and secretly think 'what a pussy i do twice that in my sleep', because by that point they realize that everyone starts somewhere.
My dad is overweight. He wouldn't be able to run, if he tried he'd probably hurt himself, so he goes for daily walks. It's waaay better than nothing.
If you increase your calories burned and decrease calories consumed, you will lose weight. It's that simple. It doesn't matter if you're running marathons or masturbating with the intensity of a thousand burning suns, you will lose weight if your caloric intake is less than the amount you are using up.

Going by this, 50 minutes at 4mph (5.5km/50min in mph) at 300lbs burns 585 kcal. So it definitely makes a difference.
Dietwise I'd suggest counting calories, not to force yourself to stay under some set amount, but just to make that 700 calorie burger a little less appealing.
Good luck! (Not that luck has anything to do with it. Just stick with it and you'll get there :p)

SonuvBob: Haha I just started that actually, not like today but 10 minutes ago. Gonna start counting them just to see if I can adjust my intake in any way to make this easier for myself. I need to burn more then 3500 kcal a week to lose one pound. So yeah we'll see
