flying fish fuse is probably one of the most things to play with... you can just buy it and do so many things with it. one of my favorite things to do is to make small mines with them, they take like less than 5 minutes to make and are pretty cool.
here is flying fish fuse, it's basically just some fuse that makes bright colors, sparks, and creates a lot of gas when it burns so it can push itself around.
i don't really expect you guys to try this, so iunno why i documented every step, but i guess it's just cooler to see how it's made.
rammer, tube, fuse, lighter, bentonite clay, black powder and scissors.
put da bentonite in
ram (hit with hammer)
o look how nice it turned out
put in the lift charge (black powder... kinda shitty batch i made though)
pack it in there
cut up fuse, stick it in there, i think shorter lengths of fuse from 0.5 in to 1 in look the best.
doesn't have to be tightly packed or anything
stick a little piece of paper towel/tissue to help build up a little internal pressure (this isn't necessary as we are using a lift charge)
drill a hole (should probably do this first... i just am dumb sometimes.)
widen the hole with a... hole widener. and you're done.
let's light it.
(all of these are from during the day, i was gonna do one and record it in the night but i ran outta black powder, my next batch will be done tomorrow and i'll add in a night video of the mine, it looks a lot better, trust me ;P)
you probably think it's kind of lame right now, just lemme get the video of it in the night though :p. hope you enjoyed reading.
yeah i could try, i was about to order more stuff tomorrow anyways so if there's anything i don't have i can just order it :p. my friend is gonna come over tomorrow and we do this stuff all the time... just give me a description of what it is exactly.
I think a potential problem is what would happen as the fuse burns shorter. I'd maybe roll some paper around the fuse so that even if the fuse burns inward the paper is still there to let the hot air out at the edge for spinning.
hmm so basically it's like a fairly flat spool with fuse wrapped around the center? im not sure if i could make it exactly like that, i'd probably need some special fuse. could you give me an estimate of the diameter of the center where the fuse is wrapped around? also, how long does it take to burn and how many times is the fuse wrapped around?
also, when you wrap fuse in paper you end up making a special type of fuse called quickmatch. basically all the hot gases get trapped and ignite other parts of the fuse and it ends up burning really fast. i've only tried it like once and i kinda half assed it but it still burned really fast, like at least 10 ft/second.
edit: i could also kinda half ass it and just pack a tube of black powder and attach it onto a side of a disk or something and not have enough thrust for it to go out of control but for it just to stay on the ground and spin.
i have no idea how its made lol. I just used to buy them in new years for couple cents each and light them up and watch them spin on the ground hahaha. they DO have a coil of some thing that kept pushing out hot air, thats for sure
