I thought the referee sucked. I realize that wasn't an easy game but he was not in control and just kept blowing his whistle.
Yeah, i dont think anyone was happy with the refereeing. All the argentinian post match interviews started with "i dont want to talk about referees because we end up being sanctioned".
Im sure the dutch arent happy with it either. Dont know how this guy managed to get selected for such an important game.

God I really think Qatar did something to him

So ever since beating Germany in the 2002 final, Brazil have never beaten a European team in the knockout stage in the World Cup again.
2006 - beat Ghana (Africa) in ro16, then lost to France 2010 - beat Chile (South America) in ro16, then lost to Netherlands 2014 - beat Chile again in ro16, then Colombia (South America) in ro8, then lost to Germany and Netherlands 2018 - beat Mexico (North America) in ro16, then lost to Belgium 2022 - beat South Korea (Asia) in ro16, then lost to Croatia

How? :/ i really struggle with this. I get it if you were from cro or mor but otherwise?
None of those teams play aweinspiring futeball or anything close to it for bystanders to root for them. The underdog thing? Dont really get it.

I tend to agree the final in that case wouldn't be great, but it would mean that the semi finals had been excellent

I also don't get this obsession with underdogs who play anti-football and luck their way through the tournament. The only people who root for such underdogs are either (a) someone with strong nationalistic and cultural views (including trivial stuff like disliking players dancing); (b) casual viewers who don't really play, watch and understand football other than watching WC and major tourneys once in a while; (c) gamblers.
I feel sad that Brazil is out. A Brazil-Argentina grudge match is a missed opportunity - an epic match that could be remembered through the ages and win more footballing fans around the world. Look, I admire what Croatia has done and players like Modric and Kovacic. But playing for the draw and penalties is really not the way that football should be played. I also admire Morocco - in fact, I have been rooting and hyping them up since the start of the tourney and early in this thread. But a Croatia - Morocco final? Based on how both teams have been playing in the knockouts so far? Sorry, I'm not even going to bother watching that final - and neither will many of my football buddies (and also casual viewers).
I really wish something can be done to do away penalty kicks. Maybe a 5v5 and 3v3 offence v defence turn-based contest instead. Or player v keeper with player starting at the middle of the field. Or sudden death extra time with number of players being removed after intervals. Anything that replicates real football. But this is wistful thinking of course. Everyone is just too used to penalty kicks.

Absolute nonsense. People like an underdog story. Simple. I suppose you could call that a 'strong cultural view' but its pretty common everywhere. Saying to those people that they obviously aren't a real football fan is stupid. In England every year people complain about the FA cup until an upset happens and some team no-one's heard of knocks out a much better team and all of a sudden everyone's engrossed. Its always fascinating tactically too to see how its done on the part of the underdog.

The dutch started it with Boulahrouz intentionally injuring Ronaldo with van Basten laughing in the bench. I've hated the dutch teams since then. Lots of great matches this world cup. Time to prepare the game luck rituals for tomorrow. Van Basten is pretty famous for wanting to play attractive football and giving his players instructions to make the game fun to watch for everyone. He wasn't laughing because Ronaldo got injured. The worst thing about these types of games is the victim complex of fans. Dirty games like this happen when it's a tough match, emotions are high and the referee loses control. It takes two to tango.

the only thing i like about croatia winning is that messi has an easier path to the finals. im of the same opinion as a few others though on the underdog thing. i dont give a shit if a team is the underdog or not. outside of the teams im affiliated with by country, i want the best performing teams to win, not the team that sits back and hopes they can win on penalties

There is a difference between rooting for an underdog which plays like a champion and an underdog which plays like a loser. Obviously I'm exaggerating the difference, and underdogs can fall somewhere between both extreme ends of the spectrum. And whether underdog is truly good or bad can be a subjective question. But the point is that it's silly to root for an underdog simply because they're an underdog.

An Argentina Portugal final with Ronaldo on the bench would be somewhat poetic.

Morocco has only played one knockout stage so far.their group games were awesome and better than Spains or Argentinas and yet there is hate on how they play football?

Imagine Croatia playing Argentina in the semis and doing 2-3 cynical fouls on Messi in the first few minutes and getting him off the pitch injured.

Then Portugal wins on penalty shootout and CRonaldo is permanently crowned GOAT because he won a world cup and Messi did not.

Neither Morocco nor Croatia 'played like losers', what the hell are you on about.
They aren't Greece in Euro 2004 playing for a draw every game, they've both played actual football complemented with work and passion.
