Saudis only want a win, a draw or loss likely both lead to elimination (if Arg win or draw). So they're not going to play for a draw. Mexico also needs a win obv. So that's going to be an open game. If Saudi win or Mexico wins 4-0 +, Argentina need a win. So they're never more safe than Mexico being 1-0 or 2-0 up, and 2 late goals could send them home. Not a safe scenario, so they're going to play to win. Poland are the only ones who don't mind a draw, which will get them at least 2nd place. So I expect a 4-4-1-1 / 4-5-1 from them. Lewa is going to have a tough time getting stuff done as he isn't the best on the break. Even if they're down 1-0, keeping it that way could get them through if Mexico don't manage to score 3. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up Arg Mex Pol Sau after all. Saudis already seemed more tired in their 2nd game and their entire plan is to run after opponents for 90 minutes. Argentina will need a bit of individual skill to find that first goal, but after that, they're set. Arg 1 - 0 Pol Mex 3 - 0 Sau Mex and Pol both have +1 goal difference, but Mex has scored 3 and Pol only 2. So Pol goes home as usual, Mex reaches the ro16 as usual.

Not sure why we haven’t seen that Argentina so far but I think it was pretty reasonable to have them up there amongst the favourites Spain/Germany is looking pretty tasty given Spain started so strongly and Germany cannot afford to lose of tomorrow’s action

Funny how they had this great chance in 2002 being placed in Group A (being a quirk due to two co-hosts) but bungled it massively. And ended up being the first team to be knocked out.

Maybe it's just a cultural rivalry of sorts. The stereotype of Latin American footballers being cunning cheaters (eg Suarez). In contrast, Brazil and Argentina are widely loved by football fans in Africa and Asia. A lot of my friends see players like Messi and Neymar as heroes. They are aware of the dark side of such teams and players (including the likes of Italy and CR7). But such anti-heroes are still respected for the fun and flavour that they bring to the game. Just an observation of mine. Not sure if it's fair and accurate. And just curious to get some views from Europeans.

Actually, in 2002, France was not the 1st team to be knocked out, because they were still alive going into game 3 while there were other teams who were out after game 2.

Sorry, my bad then. Now that I try to recall harder, France lost against Senegal, drew the second game, and entered the third game needing a win (the only game that a half-fit Zidane played). So yeah, probably some teams got knocked out earlier by the second round of matches.

As you said, I don't like cheaters and if you say you like them for bringing 'flavour' to the game, that's a really fine line. Nothing wrong with a match that's on edge and players go the distance to win, but watch an average Getafe game and you've crossed the line, you've taken away the entertainment and skill and you're left with only drama. I particularly hate it when people are lying. Rivaldo faking getting hit in the head? Scum. Busquets peeking at the ref when simulating? Scum. Suarez goalkeeping against Ghana? Not so much, it was in the heat of the moment, he has to accept the punishment by the rules and the game continues. Maybe that's one reason I welcome the VAR, even though it's not 100%; I can't stand the injustice. Asking for a yellow when it clearly isn't one should get you one yourself (even better, only captains can argue). I don't agree Arg and Bra get a lot of hate - at least, I don't see it. Lots of people here hope Messi will crown his career with a wc win. Yeah, we hate some of their behaviour and hope we get to see as little as possible of it. But I also hope those big names get to play every minute.

I don't mean to say that some African and Asian football fans liked cheaters. But not liking cheaters don't mean that we should wish physical harm upon them. So seeing people cheering and gloating when players get injured just sickens me.

So seeing people cheering and gloating when players get injured just sickens me. I don't see anybody gloating that Neymar is injured, nor did I see any of that when he got kneed in the back in 2014. I don't think anybody has ill will toward him, or Messi, or CR7, or Mbappe. At most they are relieved if something happens to them because their own team is then relatively stronger if they have to face them However, even those are a small minority in comparison to the vast majority who just want to see the best players play the best football, and then preferably their own country come out on top. But if not the latter then still definitely the former!
