And no, TL is certainly not a democracy, why would it be?

do you expect it to be one? why would being a democracy be better?
copied from the 10 Commandments thread (which you read, since all new members automatically get linked to it):
1. THIS IS OUR HOUSE You are our guests. We will make all attempts to treat everyone with due respect and to accommodate everyone's wishes as far as reasonably possible. But, this is a private site. So remember next time you come over to bring something; a jello mold or mac & cheese are common.

It's amazing the growth this site has had since TSL and Starcraft 2 hit.. I remember when i first started lurking in 2007/2008 It usually had around 600 active members online at any given time, now it's like between 2k-4k at any given time.
Even getting "Server busy" when there's no event or anything going on

Totally agree

Belive me TL is a fucking christmas wonderland compared to some of the sites I've been a mod on earlier. You say it's not a democrasy, well welcome to the internet my friend. And thanks to the high banrate on teamliquid we keep a high quality in the post section, as said in the op.
The thing is that once you've lurked TL for a while and learned what's acceptable you're ready to post. It's not like on other forums where you just dive right in, that's what sets TL apart from other forums and that's what makes it so great in my eyes. I mean I still remember the first time I created a OP here, I was fucking scared because I didn't want to get banned. I made sure to stay waaay under the radar and expand my posting. It has not only helped me become a contributor on TL, but it has also helped me become a better contributor in general.
Also I've NEVER seen the point in posting "lol" or anything like that.

I find it really easy not to get banned on TL or anger the mods by following one simple rule. + Show Spoiler +

I wish every forum out there was moderated like here, internet would be a much better place to visit. Exceptional job! =)

It's great because it automatically rules out anything from 4chan or in that style. I've learned everything I know about 4chan from TL. For me it's like a myth in a story that parents tell their children to make them behave.

The one thing I do feel about TL is that at times the colored staff and others with sick icons and stuff can be intimidating. I remember when I first lurked here, I didn't wanna post cause I just thought every post of mine would get ridiculed by that grim reaper guy.
However as I've gotten accustomed to TL, it's become second nature now. What I can do, what I can't do. While the staff and mods here might come off as intimidating, they're fair people. If your thread was closed, it's probably cause it sucked. Sometimes you might feel differently than they do, but I think they give everyone an equal chance.
Once you climb up the ladder and have proven yourself as a contributor to the community, you'll get more leniency and freedom. Haha rekrul is a good dude. I wouldn't say that making good posts is too hard of a thing to do. Just be active, voice your opinion without insulting people, and make good threads. Nobody will ban you if you're objective; I've read all the bans from the very first one on the automated ban list and every single one that has a reason besides the "I have my reasons" ones has been very understandable.
I made one thread once at the start of SCII about a crack, and it got closed. Hooray for my stupidity, and I never did it again. Granted, I'm pretty sure many of my posts are one-liners (hitting 3k+ in like four months (kona-ism?) can do that to you but I feel like I've been a good poster overall.
This site is great. To be a part of it, you yourself should be great. 3500 posts in with no warnings, one closed (lol crack, sorry~) thread, and four months experience has shown me how great a site TL is.

On April 22 2010 01:07 iounas wrote: ^ oh man double posting... Your gonna get banned for life.. The reason Im saying this is because I was on a small forum that talks about a lot of games.. Its a small friendly forum with no trolls or bs or 50% topic closing rate and one normal user posted a topic to post your screenshots from some game and said something like "if you can..post it like attach or link for people with slow internet".. And I take a screenshot from a game and resize it so its like 50kb and embed it and I get a mod warning saying "next time read the rules noob".. Its a screenshot thread in year 2009 with avatars of bigger size and it wasnt a rule and its a friendly site.. So I unleash a shitstorm of rage and I see my post was reverted but Im never visiting that site again.. It's difficult to imagine what it's like to mod a forum the size of TL. There are times that I think the mods are too strict, too subjective or out of line, but I've modded a medium sized D2 forum and I remember how difficult it is to handle every situation. If you give leeway, people are going to take advantage of it, and it's impossible to avoid subjectivity when there's so many people regulating.
This isn't a democracy, nor should it be. It's like a somewhat strict aristocracy, which helps keeps better posters around and at the same time while they're being strict, TL is also very very generous to the SC community.
There have been very few times where I felt like I or someone else was getting punished while being rational and the benefits of being in this community far outweigh those moments.

I think that's exactly how it should be. You shouldn't just jump into a situation without observing your surroundings first. I find observe, think, speak is a good method for TL and real life. The people who speak first are the ones who usually get banned, and they're annoying as fuck in classes when they ask shit that's right on the piece of paper in front of them. >.>

Yeah I guess what you say is correct, however, it's really difficult to not get banned or warned. I've been posting on here for a while without any warns or bans too.
And yeah, the longer you post and peruse this forum you learn what kind of threads are successful (in terms of community interest and # of posts it'll obtain).
Two things I find most respectable about TL is the maturity (which is definitely thanks to the strict and well-done moderation) and the sub-communities. And by sub-communities I mean the little interest groups that pop up in here. The one's i'm most involved in are the HoN thread, NBA thread, and high thread ;D
Regretfully, I have to say that I lost most of my interest in starcraft a while back ago when I started playing DotA but all these other interesting groups and topics keep me busy =)
