People like you who think the only reason people would have a problem with someone is because they are xenophobic sexists. I can't tell if you are being ironic on purpose or not. "You're mad because you're mad and you haven't decided whether or not you ever needed a reason other than "Asian girl doing a white man's job"" Your words. Or were you meaning something else?
"YOU PEOPLE ALWAYS THINK WE'RE JUST BEING XENOPHOBIC"
it's the exact same thing as "Pfft. Condescending? Like you even know what that means"

All the while just coincidentally not noticing every other thick and difficult accent to understand because Artosis is talking so loud over them they may as well not talk. By people he meant just you, because you are alone in being devoid of logic. The job is meant for people fluent in English, hence you have Artosis and Tasteless (both fluent in English). Pointing out that it is hosted in a non-English speaking country does not even matter, are you saying you can condone pathetic English commentators for the China Olympics or other international events not held in an English speaking country?
People are not whining, they are making a point that she is bad or at least not up to par for the job. The criticisms are constant because the problem is constant, if she got better of course they would die down (some trolls will still continue). Last thing, accent is only part of the problem, her diction and pronunciation, failure to connect with co-caster and also occasional lack of knowledge (this factor is not a big issue in my opinion) are majority of the issues that have been pointed out. So don't just choose what you think you can refute and make a fool of yourself.

I liked her! Hopefully she does well with whatever she does next
|
I think it's such a huge shame that she won't be casting anymore. I never really had a problem with her. Sure she was inexperienced in comparison to Artosis/Tasteless but she never detracted from the games.
|
Best of luck to her in the future. Atleast she had the balls to give it a shot so fair play to her Hope she gets a better reaction at her next job.
|
so they are booting her because of a few forum people? damn that sucks, she was really good for a girl caster, actually knew her stuff
|
Although she had a rough start, after a few weeks of her casting I'm sad to see her going. I don't know if she changed anything or I just got used to her casting/voice, but hopefully she makes a return down the road

Too bad Kelly didn't work out. I'll still check out things she's involved with in the future for tournaments since thick accents don't bother me one bit over that crap audio stream gomtv has. When I can't hear even tastosis with all the noise and stutters half the time. I'm kinda shocked Gom can't just hire a korean to cast the english stream.
|
she tried her best, but ultimately she wasnt captivating or interesting enough. doa is kind of the same way, except he sounds pleasant and sticks to the play by play.
in wc3 there were a few female casters who were applauded by the community (bunny, jackie, kidarctica) and two of them had thick accents as well. they were captivating, and used their differences to the standard casters to their advantage.

Some people really are inconsiderate and immature. Unbelievable.

I think everybody finds it pretty hard to realise that all people have preduces, but that the right thing to do is identify them in ourselves and then adjust our opinions accordingly. If you're someone who can't even see predudice within yourself, you're not anywhere near realising what equality means.
Predudice doesn't only mean that you openly say "ugh, what does this GIRL know about gaming!", it means that you might have an overly harsh opinion of someone simply because your predudice has affected your judgements.
In my mind there is no doubt that people gave Kelly short shrift because she is a) female b) normal looking c) SE Asian with a strong accent.

Glad Gom gave her a shot, she tried hard, but sometimes its not effort or lack there of that matters. Certain positions just require certain things, naturally, and being a commentator for an English audience that previously listened to two of the best casters, it's going to be hard to meet those standards. Sad to see her go and possibly lose the position, but some things aren't meant to be, me and many others will be a lot happier when we can watch the game and not have to figure out whats been said, or not know completely.

Yea these forum people also happen to be the people who are paying for their service. Also why are you lowering your standards because of her sex? This isn't the 100m sprint, "Oh she ran under 10s thats really good for girl" this is a job where sex does not play a factor in how well you do.
|
I think GOM did the right move actually, they test her for one season, and now they want to test other casters. I don't see where is the problem. The more choice they have, the better the final results will be. So people need to calm down and see the other casters and give their opinion about which casters or which duo-casters they prefer.

What's with all this "tried her best" and "didn't work out" nonsense? Read the OP. She was planning to return to Singapore before she even started, they're trying out casters. Period.
We may very well see her again.

agreed. I too wish her success but I really didn't enjoy her accent. I hope she does well elsewhere. And yeah, I'm paying for premium service, so I really hope I get to see someone better.

I don't think anyone in this community would dislike Kelly because she's a girl, or even less so because she was Asian. The forum outcry was to do with her quality of English, many people have great difficulty understanding that accent and of course they will be upset if their favourite show suddenly became 50% less understandable because a caster chosen for an English stream had a difficult accent. I think the moderators handled it poorly in live report threads and elsewhere on the forum in an attempt to quell the criticism. For example in the first few LR threads where it was forbidden to comment on the casters at all only negative comments were banned.
I think it's a testament to the strength of the community's interest in the GSL that people were willing to voice their disapproval, accurate or not. It's not childish to say you don't like someone regardless of who or what they are. The people vehemently defending Kelly did so hopefully because they liked her casting and the people criticising Kelly did so, again hopefully because they disliked her casting. TL's moderator stance was pretty bad and it would have been just as bad had they taken another stance. But they were very much Kelly positive and I feel that has led to a surge of people defending Kelly simply because it was seen to be TL's official stance.
Also on a personal stance I think Kelly really lost all the respect she could have ever hoped to get from me by saying that her critics disliked her because she was Asian and a Female. In such a tolerant environment as this community I feel that this just highlights her own racist and sexist views in a way everyone should be ashamed of.

Sure we might need to calm down but GOM also needs to know what their customers value the most. From the responses it is quite clear that what we value most is a commentator who can speak good, clear English.

Considering the community reaction, I would say that is most unlikely. GOM had to start locking every thread with the word Kelly in it because the user base was not pleased and it was swamping their forum with criticism.

I think it's fair to give other caster a chance to shine
