Woah, did they fix knifing?
I knife only (don't go "LOL SOMEONE WANTS TO BE ONLYUSEMEBLADE", I've been doing it long before he started making videos) and I've noticed a huge difference in the mechanics of it since the patch. Lunge is significantly smaller, you seem to not be invincible while lunging, so forth. I mean, I'm not complaining, this is actually a challenge now. Especially when using Ghost/Ninja instead of Lightweight/Marathon.
|
Yes, there's was a lunge range reduction in the patch. Was also a tweak to sniper rifles so they don't sway quite as hard when you scope in. Still has that "zoom in off-center, oh whoops time to recenter" every time you zoom in, but it isn't as pronounced.
I haven't had a chance to snipe enough yet to see if the hit detection is better or not as I prestiged right before the patch hit and just got the L96 again. Did have a game where I was sure I hit the guy twice and got no hit markers, but lag was kinda bad that game so that might have something to do with it. It does feel a tad more solid and isn't quite as frustrating to use.
Hrm, just checked Den Kirson's site and though he hasn't updated the charts as the PC hasn't gotten the patch (aka, not taking word of mouth) his update said that the PSG-1 now kills to the stomach (along with the announced headshot multipliers to allow all suppressed snipers to one shot kill with a headshot). I went and tested in a Private Match and the PSG-1 does indeed kill to the lower torso now. Huzzah for having the Barrett back (think it was the gun I had the third most kills with in MW2, after the Scar and RPD). I'll play around with it and see how things go. Edit: Hit marker central. Screw you, game. Edit 2: Apparently the better stomach multiplier is only if the PSG-1 has no attachments. With attachments it doesn't one shot kill to lower torso. Weird, but whatever. Time to give it another go. Gun still feels plastic as opposed to the solid feeling the Barrett had. ... ... seems to work decently with no attachments after playing one game on Villa.
ISP came out and found the problem with our internet (patch job from years ago basically came undone, one of the cables had been in the weather for years without the normal cover it should have). Get disconnected about a fourth as often now, but it still happens irritatingly often. -.- Still get random ass lag that only seems to effect me (everyone else not 1 barring while I am and vent ping goes up) from time to time as well.
On the other hand, I gave Nazi Zombies another go last night after watching a video xcalizorz put up about getting to the later rounds while solo (on Kin der Totan at least). Hadn't really understood the strategy before so I didn't get very far but he explained it fairly well. Only made a few attempts and got to 13 before dying to being stupid (was rather tired). It's an interesting diversion, but maybe I need to play with other people as I'm not seeing why people get such a hardon for it (when I looked last night, there was a ton of people in the playlist, maybe 70% of the number in standard multiplayer). Then again, some people are just suckers for killing zombies and that's all they need to have fun.

Seems like every patch that releases makes gaming with my friends that much harder. The first week or two the patches were horrendous and would spend 1/3 of the time connecting to a lobby with my friends 2/3 of the time actually getting a game without lag and 3/3 of the time gaming. Patches got better after or during the 2nd week and wasn't to bad until this latest patch. Now i'm barely to get a game going with 5-6 of my friends and if we do get a game it seems to drop half my friends or i end up getting put into a good lagless lobby where i get separated from my friends. I have a friend that uses the same ISP and lives in my same town and it seems like we can never get a game going.
Was also a tweak to sniper rifles so they don't sway quite as hard when you scope in. Still has that "zoom in off-center, oh whoops time to recenter" every time you zoom in, but it isn't as pronounced.
yea it seems like patch by patch my sniping goes off and ranges from the dragunov or ls96 as being my best options but keep changing up it seems.
Edit: and now i read this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-15-ps3-gamers-outraged-at-black-ops
I really enjoy the game to pass some time, hopefully they are able to fix it. Getting a new ISP in a couple of weeks so heaven knows if that will make anything better for me, not that my current ISP is shitty but just that im getting a better deal changing up, and i hope a better connection.

for those who haven't heard about it yet... in february the first dlc comes out! Call of Duty: Black Ops - First Strike
5 totally new maps and one new zombie map/mode
|
Don't know about anybody else, but I'm not sure I trust Treyarch to make good maps to make the map pack worth it. Especially since they likely had the basic design of the First Strike maps done before the game even released.
About half of the current maps are terrible. A good number of them have retarded rooms with only one entrance (or one viable entrance and the other isn't usually useful enough) making it stupid easy for campers to sit inside watching the door and you can't really go around to flank them.
Villa is a large culprit of that. Seems like in TDM it's just about which team can camp the upstairs room in the center above the bar. Has another one entrance room, too. Havana has two rooms like that as well (and is absolutely horrible for spawn trapping on Demolition - it practically auto traps you once the other team pushes up a bit). Everyone also camps the center blue building on Firing Range. The stairs are easy to watch and coming up the middle window is usually suicide. The back window is the only one that can work, but they can check it if needed (especially if someone else is in the tower - though that's easier to deal with) and you're vulnerable when climbing through it in case they're looking that way anyways.
WMD technically has one, but it's fairly small and has a bunch of windows (aka, hard for them to hide inside) as well as not having the greatest view of the map so it's not a huge deal. The two main buildings in WMD are easy enough to infiltrate, so they aren't a big deal (the really high catwalk apparently being nigh bullet proof from below is damn annoying, though). Summit is a clusterfuck of spawn flipping, though otherwise it isn't -too- horrible, design-wise. Launch also spawn flips at the drop of a hat (think it's my most hated map in the game - the layout is just frustrating to work with, even discounting it only really having two spawn areas).
Array usually has a horrible flow in TDM, due to where the spawn points are. A ton of the fighting just happens on that hill... until the bottom of the hill flips to the third spawn point 100 feet behind the top of the hill's spawn point and then shoot them in the back, causing those guys to spawn at the bottom and get anyone at the bottom of the hill still in the back. Otherwise Array works out ok, for the most part.
Nuketown I've pretty much gotten used to, and everybody and their mother seems to love it anyways. Learning that you can climb up to the ledge outside either one of the main windows, giving another way into that second story to deal with campers without taking them headon, makes it less painful as well. Can't always use it if a lot of people are in the middle, but the option can come in handy.
Crisis, Hanoi, and Cracked are the three maps I actually kinda like. Hanoi's middle building is kinda strong and fairly defensible, but so far hasn't proved too annoying to deal with and the rest of the map has some decent routes you can take.
On a fairly unrelated note, I've found a new class that thus far has been the most fun class to play for me.
Stakeout (Grip) Crossbow
Grenade (use Semtex or Tomahawk if you really want to), Concussive (Flashbang can work too), Jammer
Scavenger Pro Sleight of Hand Pro Hacker Pro
The Stakeout is a pretty fun gun to use and is actually quite effective unless you're on something like Array or Hanoi (too much mid range combat on Hanoi). The Crossbow is for long range shots, among other fun uses. Scavenger does a number of things, aside from refilling lethal and tactical grenades (good for getting past claymores to hack them/shoot people behind them, if you dropped the jammer elsewhere) and letting you not run out of ammo for the Stakeout really fast, Scavenger (Pro) starts you with five total crossbow bolts instead of two AND it lets you pick up more bolts, even though they could be counted as explosive launchers depending on your definition. Makes it a lot easier to spam a few bolts to root out campers, and getting a crossbow stick at medium to long range has to be the most satisfying thing I've come across in Black Ops so far. Hacker lets you not walk so easily into the 40 million claymores that are on every map, among other all around uses. Sleight of Hand just works incredibly well with the Stakeout, as you reload your four shots faster (which are reloaded individually) and you ADS faster, as you pretty much always want to ADS the Stakeout - outside of a few panic strafe moments right around knife range. Along with, of course, letting you spam a few crossbow bolts at a much faster rate.
The Spas is ok, but usually doesn't get the job done for me. Has a slightly shorter range and less damage per pellet, to start with. It's really bulky when ADSing, blocking a lot of your view (and you need to get a little closer often, so the slower movement while ADS'd sometimes hurts more than it helps). The last few times I used the gun for Spas Brutality contracts, I ran Flak Jacket, Steady Aim, and Marathon (none Pro). Only real annoyance with Steady Aim is that the Spas takes -forever- to reload at normal speed. Just doesn't work out for me as reliably as the Stakeout, though. Too many shots to kill on average leading to some deaths, and more deaths due to the shorter range.

Nazi Zombies has lost its luster to me. I loved it on WaW, but now that it's the new "in" or "cool" thing that everyone plays, I don't want to play it anymore. Even my own family plays it >.<
Edit: For the map pack, I'll probably wait to see what the people on this thread think. The game's maps are bad enough already, I won't just blindly buy more maps like most of the idiots that play this game.

Is anyone on TL looking to play this game at a professional level? I'm kind of curious to see whats out there as I am looking to play this game at the top level. As far as the pro teams out there for other FPS's I haven't seen much about Black Ops, maybe that will change when competitions start up in the new year.

Don't know about ppl on TL but best players plays on gamebattles I believe so if you want to check some of the videos youtube it, it think woody gamers and machinima have some of them too.

I've been trying out stuff I've seen other people use, tweaking it a little bit and now...I dominate. If my team is not busy suiciding(which does happen) it's nearly imposible to lose.
The classes I use the most:
AK74u + Rapid Fire Scavenger, Steady Aim and Ninja Yes, that's a noob class. But since everyone is running around and most claymores are placed in useless locations, it's extremely effective.
Spas-12 + Silencer Ghost, Steady Aim and Ninja This is the counter-class to the above. To be precise, it counters almost all MP-users. Reload time isn't a problem, since I'm hard to detect - I found time for it, even on Nuke Town.
AK47 + Red Dot Scavenger, Sleight of Hand, Hacker I found the AK47 to be the perfect assault-rifle for close-medium range...but only with Scavenger. I just empty a full clip on an enemy and refill.
Equipment is always the same: Semtex, Stun Grenade, Claymore
As soon as I'm level 44 again, I'll make 2 new classes: Both copies of my AK47-class but with the Commando/G11.

No way that this game will be played professionally. And I am talking about cod2/cod4 professionality. This game is a nice public game that everyone will be forgotten in maximum 2 years.

i need help TL, i barely played MW2 and i want to get into BO with my friends. I played halo and battlefield in high school but the killstreaks and terribad spawns prevent me from even going positive in some games QQ. Is there any play guides for playing well or noob-proof classes i can use?
i am level 13 and right now i'm using: M16 with extended mags LAW hardline hardened tactical mask
Right now i am trying to get double kills for getting the RCXD for more kills so i get at least 2-3 kills a life, but as it stands i can barely get 1 kill without dying.

Don't use the RCXD (on a regular basis). Use the Spy Plane. Knowing where (most of) the other team is at is far more helpful than driving around the map for 20 seconds for a kill (though sometimes you get to ruin someone's day by ending their killstreak as those damn cars are like ninjas on crack sometimes). Especially because the spawns LOVE to flip constantly. Spy Planes will let you know that you're gonna get shot in the back in about 10 seconds if you don't turn around (hi Jungle, screw you). Counter Spy Plane/SAM Turret aren't bad, either. They may not inflate your kdr, but they do help. I ran a 3-4-5 setup for multiple prestiges and I usually average over 2.0 in normal TDM (joked with a friend that due to all the people that got it for Christmas, I could go get a bunch of 5+ kdr game - haven't played much and already got half a dozen of those). Just because they're low killstreaks, doesn't mean they aren't worth using. Knowledge is power. I think the highest killstreak I've had equipped for any length of time was the Blackbird, but I took it off because I just can't get often enough for my tastes. I'll take 5 Spy Planes, 3 Counter Spy Planes, and 2 Napalms over 1 Blackbird.
I personally love Sleight of Hand (Pro). The time reduction on reloads alone can really save your life. Pro just makes it that much better. Assault rifles (that aren't the Enfield - it ADSs like a SMG) take 0.25 seconds to look down the sight (LMGs are .35, but don't use them if you're new). Sleight of Hand Pro halves that, taking off 1/8 of a second. 1/8 in a gunfight in COD, where you can die so quickly, can be quite the advantage. It's not exactly a flat bonus, due to hip firing (sometimes people only hip fire, other times they start firing and then ADS) or people ADSing as they walk around a corner.
Do not chase people. I don't mean people that haven't seen you that you need a better shot on (though sometimes even then you should let them go - like if they're about to run into the middle of the map where one of their teammates might pick you off). I mean if you get into a gunfight with someone, you get some hitmarkers (possibly he did on you as well) and he pops around the corner. Don't chase him. He's likely sitting around the corner, already looking at where you're going to run around it, ready to blow your head off because you need to determine exactly where he is (depending on the corner), aim at him, and then fire. If you get some hit markers on somebody and they get away - let them get away. Chances are they're going to turn around, possibly regen their health, and try to find you. Wait 'em out (or just leave) - preferably not in the most obvious spot (crouched 5 feet behind the last corner they saw you at).
The middle of the map. Avoid walking there as much as possible. Preferably never. Stick to the outer edges. Get your flank on. Doesn't matter if you take an extra half second to aim on average if you're shooting someone in the ass because they don't know you're there.
Slow the fuck down. Just in general. Just because you can't see an enemy to shoot, does not mean you need to break from cover instantly and charge where you think they are at. If you don't see someone for a little while then sure, move out. They might be spawning on the other side of the map, avoiding you because you raped them too hard from your defensive position (upon which they will usually yell "camping noob" and then rush straight at you for a revenge kill, only to get shot again), or they're all camping really hard in random corners of the map (in which case you get to practice your anti-camp skills - tactical grenades are always pretty handy, and hacker to see the claymores/motion sensors). By the same token as earlier in regards to chasing, if you know someone is around the corner (even if he doesn't know you're there - like a teammate walked in and died, or you died there recently, or maybe even due to a wonderful Spy Plane) and you're reasonably sure he's keeping an eye on the direction you're in - don't walk around the corner and try to outgun him. Go around and flank. Yes it takes longer, and yes you sometimes get killed en route, but you'll die even more trying to fight people head on that more than likely have some cover (and often a small doorway to watch vs scanning the entire room as you enter).
Depending on the game mode, certain maps trend towards certain tendencies due to the spawns. You'll pick those up over time, which'll help you out (Jungle TDM being about fighting among those huts and having people spawn behind you 80% of the game, 40% of Array TDMs taking place on that single sloped hill) over time. As you learn stuff like that, it'll also get easier to place decent Napalm strikes (and other killstreaks).

In addition to what Vortok said: When creating a class, think about what it is good for. Especially the perks dictate your playstyle.
Burst-fire-weapons like the M16 are harder to use in Black Ops than full-auto-guns like the Enfield/FAMAS because you will need 2 bursts in most situations and the other guns out-DPS you in that case, since there is a delay between bursts. At level 44 you will get the G11 - if you like burst-fire use this weapon.
A class I use for the first ~20 levels:
MP5K + extended mags ASP Lightweight Steady Aim Marathon
Not only is it easy to get kills, but you will get to know the maps since you can run around very fast.

here's my classes i use.
L96 "Variable zoom" akimbo m1911 Scavanger sleight of hand "yes i know it doesnt help with the pro version with rifles but i reload a lot" ninja
Galil "silencer" Akimbo m1911 Scavanger Sleight of hand Ninja
Fal "Reflex" Crossbow Scavanger Sleight of hand Hacker
Galil "Duel mags" Crossbow Scavanger sleight of hand Ninja
Commando "reflex" crossbow scavanger sleight of hand hacker
Use frag grenade, stun grenade, and C4 as my equipment. with Uav, Napalm, and Rolling thunder as kill streaks. duel mags and sleight of hand are montrous reload times when together, which helps my bad habit of reloading after every kill. the fal is really good but only when you have a good connection "ie 4 bar and maybey 3 bar" its a 2 shot kill

Thanks for the advice guys, i sort have just been picking cool weapons and charging into fights. I'm so used to playing halo where you can get away with being rambo. I'll make a better class and try moving around the map like you guys described.

I'm confused. It's an attachment on the gun. But I am really depressed about the LMG's in this game. All of them are heavier assault rifles, only one of them actually feels like an LMG. Their is already like 10 AR's to the 5 LMG's, they didn't need to make them all into 30 bullet clip assault riffles. M60 is the only real LMG. Only other thing I noticed about the guns is that the AK74u is absolutely ridiculously good, and famas is up their with it. I dunno about you guys but I get killed by these two guns more then every other gun combined. I really, really hate the new LMG's. One of my favorite weapons in COD4 was the RPD because: 1) 100 rd clip = RATATATATATA or 1 Heli 2) Really good iron sights so I can put a grip on it. 3) One shot kills at any range in hardcore, and 1-2 shots through a wall to kill. It seems like LMGs in Black Ops are just .. heavier assault rifles. Same damage, same clip size but you move super slow.
The M60 is the only real LMG in the game, I think it still sucks though.

I really, really hope PC. The game is way more interesting on PC than it is on console because of how the skill ceiling changes.
