What if hellions lost the flamethrower that many people complain about and the reaper got it instead?
Think about it: its got fuel in its jetpacks, its designed as a base-raider, early splash would be useful against any number of things (but short firebat-esque range: maybe 3?), upgradable bonus vs light just like the hellion has now (the upgrade gives +10 vs light instead of +4 to keep it useful late game) and throw in D8 mines and stim (both would have to be upgrades) and suddenly, you have yourself a seriously badass unit.
Make them fast, weak and maneuverable and give them cliffclimb and they could be an awesome unit.
And we will be able to see a logical progression from the firebat to the reaper.
What do you all think?
PS I also posted this in the SC2 Armory, so if you want, you can read peoples' opinions on it here

i think game is too close for release to change such a big things, i mean, new models, animations etc. but idea sounds good

Lawls!
In case you didnt know Starcraft 2 is trapped in a space time continuum rift. Its release point has an equal probablitiy for every moment from right now untill the end of time.

reapers with d-8 charges and flamethrowers would be real successor to the vulture. scary as hell.
also, rofl @ archerofaiur's post

I know hellions aren't popular, but why can't people bring up new unit ideas instead of messing with currently existing units?
Think about it: its got fuel in its jetpacks
And has limited fuel, which it has to use to jump. (Obviously they don't run of either fuel or ammunition in-game, but I'm countering your lore argument here.) Furthermore, flamethrowers are large weapons, not like the small pistols; they're not a good idea for a "weight conscious" unit. Furthermore reapers already have a splash damage option in terms of mines. Using them takes a bit of micro; I presume Blizzard took away splash damage from banshees because you could worker raid too easily with them without bothering to micro. (With splash damage, they can kill workers easily without supervision; just queue up their attack orders.)
Also, firebats are (in lore, and in Wings of Liberty) heavily armored units. They really have nothing in common with reapers other than being infantry, and in-game both being reasonably good at killing light units like zerglings. Firebats are more like marauders in-game in that they're supposed to "tank" (against light units - something marauders are no good at) rather than use the reaper's strategy of outmaneuvering them.

I think a reaper with a flamethrower would remind me of a certain someone...

Making reapers even more of a one trick pony isn't the way to go here. Firebats with jetpacks would be insane peon harassers, but still be pretty much useless in a straight-up fight against anything but lings or zeals. As it is, reapers kick ass at harass, but suck at fighting. Flamethrowers would make it even worse.

i proposed this a long time ago along with other people who had the same idea. I really like it because it just doesnt look right on a vehicle like the hellion.
Then maybe they would bring the vulture back :D!!
For those that say its too much to change this late in the games development.... Beta isnt even out yet, sooo yeah.

Whatever, with D8 and cliff-hop, as well as greater speed and a strong late-game attack against light units, this unit has a potential to be vastly superior to the firebat. If it can take on zealots and zerglings as well as raid, its still more useful than the bat, and D8s add a very strong harassing ability to this unit.
The only other way to make this unit less of a "one-trick pony" is to give it longer range (so it can kite) or some unique ability (someone on the armory thread suggested letting the reaper move while attacking, just like the old cobra).
Personally, a more mobile firebat sounds cool, just as a more tankable firebat sounds cool. (thats what i always thought the marauder should be: a buffed firebat).

^^^^^ ha ha ha that's exactly what I was thinking. Though who wouldn't want boba fett in their army?
|
It would be cool if the reaper was given a flamethrower, they would then be able to get rid of the retarded hellion and have a new unit that can harass and fight small units extremely effectively.
|
I only dislike the hellion because Terrans went from hovercraft to fucking ATV's or something =,=
|
-_-....We've discussed this before...
This argument is ancient. I'd like all those ideas...if I was a terran user and not getting my base raped by 15 splash damaging cliff jumping, already fast but also stimmed ass holes that can not only destroy my entire worker line, but also drop mines on my buildings....-_-

I always felt that the Reaper should have flamethrowers.
1. Boba Fett may have had pistols, but they don't fit in the SC universe well. Remember the Starcraft "Amerigo" cinematic where that one marine was shooting off his pistol at that hydra? Hilarious.
2. Balance wise, just replace the stimpacks with jetpacks (double movespeed and cliff jumping ability for ~5 seconds at the cost of 10hp)
3. What I'm really not sure about are the mines. However, if balance is an issue, the damage they do is easily adjusted

Reapers should have the "power overwhelming" ability so that critics would stop whining about it.

You mean a probability of zero?
On topic, giving reapers flamethrowers won't help them. They already have stim, do extra damage against light, and D8 charges could be balanced for nice AoE anyways. How much more interesting can you get?
I mean, the only real improvement gameplay-wise that they could get would be an actual function in a massed army.

A cliff-jumping unit with flame-throwers? That just sounds like a shitload of awesome.
