Hey guys, I'm the sponsor of today's games. Want to give u some more info about Chinese players: 1. Top Chinese players play against Kor pro games often (typically there are higher prizes by rich sponsors). Chinese players have won a lot of games, although they haven't won any bo5 or bo7 sets yet. For example, Xiaoxiaoma took the first game of his match with Best this year. 2. Why Chinese players don't participate in international matches? Two reasons: 1. Lag. 2. Matches in Chinese tournaments have much higher prices. Two days ago, Caicaizerg advanced from China Star League round of 16 group A, and he received about CNY 70,000 in total ($10,000+). Also, there are many active sponsors in China who sponsor show matches everyday. I estimate there are at least 20 show matches being played every night. Each bo5 ranges from $45 to $300 in prices. 3. I guess you all all familiar with Soma, who lost to Zero in Asl final. He is what he is today, largely because of a Chinese sponsor. The sponsor paid $50,000+ (rough estimate) for Soma to play against other top Kor players, so that he could grow that fast. 4. There is a Twitch equivalent called Douyu in China. and several other platforms such as TicTok and Huya. There are 1,000+ ppl watching ~10-20 active streamers every night. So basically as you can probably tell, BW is doing well in China, mainly driven by sponsors. Top sponsors, like the one who sponsored Chinese Star League (CSL), donates ~$50,000-100,000 annually. And there are some "much poorer" sponsors like me who's willing to donate a few hundreds every month.

thanks for the links, and info about China scene. Sounds huge:O

Btw u guys remember F91? He has been the most successful SC2 commentator in China since SC2 came out. He and Xiaose formed the most influential duo of commentator and entertainer in SC2. He is earning at least $300,000+ per year. So he won't return to BW anytime soon...

would love for some western ccommentators to cover the replays.. that would be neat

This is an awesome initiative and I am really glad to learn more about the Chinese BW scene. Looking forward to future events and exchanges between the two scenes

Today's results: Bonyth 3:1 Jaystar, 0:3 Jedi, 3:1 Kid, 3:0 AirChina (aka rushgoon) Let me give a brief intro of active Chinese players: Protoss: Zhanhun: used to be the no.1 from ~2015-2017. He's still the best pvz player in China and he beats Jedi every time. ~2500-2600 mmr Qiaogege: currently the best pvt player in China. ~2500mmr AP: very good player overall but unstable, ~2500-2600mmr. He recently lost to Caicaizerg in an epic Bo9 game and Caicaizerg won $5000+. Jaystar: former pro gamer. 40 years old. Still active but old age has gotten the best of him. ~2400mmr Free: Chinese version of Free[gm]. Low APM, ~2400 mmr. His highlight was when he beat Zero (yes the ASL champion) last year 3:0 on ladder. Kukuboy: one of the audiences' favorite. He can absolutely win anybody and lost to any weaker players. He is best known for his rival with Caicaizerg, when each game can easily last 1 hr. His highlights include his victory over Sorry (ASL participant) by 3:0.

Zerg: Caicaizerg: the one, and only Bonjuwa in China. The legendary player with a broad fan base and countless haters. In the past few weeks, he won $5,000+ when he beat AP in a bo9 match and $10,000+ when he advanced from "the group of death" which included Mihu, Fengzi and Bustterran. He beat Mihu by 2:1, which was the only bo3 game Mihu lost for the entire year, and beat Fengzi by 2:0. Caicai is one of the reasons BW is still alive in China today, as he kept broadcasting for 5 years without income during a period BW was pretty much dead several years ago. The two largest groups of BW audiences today are Caicai Fans and Caicai haters. When Movie played with Chinese players for the first time, Caicai beat him with drone rush. p.s. his actual MMR is a mystery. Jedi: Overall he's the no.1 zerg. Dominate zvp player, except for the fact that he always loses to Zhanhun. Very solid zvt and zvz. He lost to mihu 4:5 in a close match-up in the last China Star League (CSL) final. Fengzi: Used to be the no.1 player in China from ~2013 - 2015. He is practicing again and is now among the top 3 zerg players. Extremely strong zvz, solid zvt and zvp. Xiaoshuai: very strong zvp player. Inconsistent zvt. Good zvz. ~2400-2500 mmr. Kid: good all-around 2nd tier zerg player. ~2400 mmr.

Terran: Mihu: Most likely the best foreign gamer outside of Kor. He ranked at no.3 on Kor ladder at one point for the last season. His recent highlights include: won 4 out of the 5 bo5 games vs. Movie (OSL runner-up), many victories vs. Mighty (ASL Participant), Noob (ASL participant), took 2 games vs. Snow. Dominate tvp player. When he won Tangu (Kor gamer, ~2700mmr) a few weeks ago, Tangu called him "Chinese flash". His tvz is also strong, as he almost beat Action in an ASL race war in June. His tvt is his weakest match-up.
Busterran: top 4 terran in China. Most known for his strong tvz, when he nuked Caicai countless times and made Caicai haters go insane. Solid tvp and tvt. ~2500mmr.
Xiaoxiaoma: top 4 terran. Known as "Chinese Fantasy". Crazy vulture control and shitty macro. He took the first game easily when he played with Best in a bo7 game and almost took another one when the two put on a great show of vulture vs. goons. He is semi-active recently due to health issues.
Loup: top 4 terran. Solid all-around player but his style proves to be too conservative at times.
AirChina: ex pro gamer. 38 years old and his old age has taken away his advantages at micro. ~2300mmr.

Thank you for these player write-ups!

good stuff
its nice to know that China has a strong scene with a ton of quality new players, haven't heard about any of those guys except for the super oldschoolers like F91/Jaystar/Fengzi/Rushgoon, maybe 1 day we'll get to see more of Sen/Lx/Pj
hopefully we can play more games vs Chinese players on Shieldbattery once its fully ready

I'll try to get more sponsors to support matches of Chinese players vs. non-Kor players. Money is not an issue as there are many rich sponsors in China who used to play BW when they were younger. The issue is lag and the effort it took to host. I had to give up bass fishing today to facilitate those matches I sponsored

ya it should be easier to manage on Shieldbattery, the ping is better (and they're still working to improve it even more for 2v2 ladder)
