Why don't those players participate in BSL or RCG?
Are there many active players in China in BW?
|
Probably because of lag? It'll be just like South Americans playing with 8TR
|
What TR was Mihu vs Bonyth played on?
|
I think tr24 high latency
|
Is there a way we can get the replays? Were very good games.
|
This is a result that is difficult for me to understand. Chinese have yet to win against the Koreans, but Bonyth and Dewalt win against the some Korean pros ofc low odds. hmm....

Hello,I also want to watch the game between Chinese and Western players, because the strength of the two teams is close,Koreans are too strong. But network latency between China and Europe may be relatively high.
There are about 4.5K players online in CN server, and at least 16 “semi-professional”players who often participate in competitions, for example: "Bonjwa" Caicai Zerg.

Could it be related to network delay? China and South Korea are geographically close, and lower latency. So Korean players can better use their skills.

Hey guys, I'm the sponsor of today's games. Want to give u some more info about Chinese players: 1. Top Chinese players play against Kor pro games often (typically there are higher prizes by rich sponsors). Chinese players have won a lot of games, although they haven't won any bo5 or bo7 sets yet. For example, Xiaoxiaoma took the first game of his match with Best this year. 2. Why Chinese players don't participate in international matches? Two reasons: 1. Lag. 2. Matches in Chinese tournaments have much higher prices. Two days ago, Caicaizerg advanced from China Star League round of 16 group A, and he received about CNY 70,000 in total ($10,000+). Also, there are many active sponsors in China who sponsor show matches everyday. I estimate there are at least 20 show matches being played every night. Each bo5 ranges from $45 to $300 in prices. 3. I guess you all all familiar with Soma, who lost to Zero in Asl final. He is what he is today, largely because of a Chinese sponsor. The sponsor paid $50,000+ (rough estimate) for Soma to play against other top Kor players, so that he could grow that fast. 4. There is a Twitch equivalent called Douyu in China. and several other platforms such as TicTok and Huya. There are 1,000+ ppl watching ~10-20 active streamers every night. So basically as you can probably tell, BW is doing well in China, mainly driven by sponsors. Top sponsors, like the one who sponsored Chinese Star League (CSL), donates ~$50,000-100,000 annually. And there are some "much poorer" sponsors like me who's willing to donate a few hundreds every month.

Whooaaa, this is awesome. Thank you @ Calvinbobo for making this happen. So happy to see Jaystar is still playing after all these years.

thanks for the links, and info about China scene. Sounds huge:O

Btw u guys remember F91? He has been the most successful SC2 commentator in China since SC2 came out. He and Xiaose formed the most influential duo of commentator and entertainer in SC2. He is earning at least $300,000+ per year. So he won't return to BW anytime soon...
|
|
would love for some western ccommentators to cover the replays.. that would be neat
|
This is an awesome initiative and I am really glad to learn more about the Chinese BW scene. Looking forward to future events and exchanges between the two scenes

caicai is my favourite chinese broodwar star. I hope he can play for more years.

lets combine the chinese and foreign scene to overcome our korean overlords

Today's results: Bonyth 3:1 Jaystar, 0:3 Jedi, 3:1 Kid, 3:0 AirChina (aka rushgoon) Let me give a brief intro of active Chinese players: Protoss: Zhanhun: used to be the no.1 from ~2015-2017. He's still the best pvz player in China and he beats Jedi every time. ~2500-2600 mmr Qiaogege: currently the best pvt player in China. ~2500mmr AP: very good player overall but unstable, ~2500-2600mmr. He recently lost to Caicaizerg in an epic Bo9 game and Caicaizerg won $5000+. Jaystar: former pro gamer. 40 years old. Still active but old age has gotten the best of him. ~2400mmr Free: Chinese version of Free[gm]. Low APM, ~2400 mmr. His highlight was when he beat Zero (yes the ASL champion) last year 3:0 on ladder. Kukuboy: one of the audiences' favorite. He can absolutely win anybody and lost to any weaker players. He is best known for his rival with Caicaizerg, when each game can easily last 1 hr. His highlights include his victory over Sorry (ASL participant) by 3:0.
|
Zerg: Caicaizerg: the one, and only Bonjuwa in China. The legendary player with a broad fan base and countless haters. In the past few weeks, he won $5,000+ when he beat AP in a bo9 match and $10,000+ when he advanced from "the group of death" which included Mihu, Fengzi and Bustterran. He beat Mihu by 2:1, which was the only bo3 game Mihu lost for the entire year, and beat Fengzi by 2:0. Caicai is one of the reasons BW is still alive in China today, as he kept broadcasting for 5 years without income during a period BW was pretty much dead several years ago. The two largest groups of BW audiences today are Caicai Fans and Caicai haters. When Movie played with Chinese players for the first time, Caicai beat him with drone rush. p.s. his actual MMR is a mystery. Jedi: Overall he's the no.1 zerg. Dominate zvp player, except for the fact that he always loses to Zhanhun. Very solid zvt and zvz. He lost to mihu 4:5 in a close match-up in the last China Star League (CSL) final. Fengzi: Used to be the no.1 player in China from ~2013 - 2015. He is practicing again and is now among the top 3 zerg players. Extremely strong zvz, solid zvt and zvp. Xiaoshuai: very strong zvp player. Inconsistent zvt. Good zvz. ~2400-2500 mmr. Kid: good all-around 2nd tier zerg player. ~2400 mmr.

interesting. i was also helping xiaoxiaoma before. how is he doing nowadays?

Terran: Mihu: Most likely the best foreign gamer outside of Kor. He ranked at no.3 on Kor ladder at one point for the last season. His recent highlights include: won 4 out of the 5 bo5 games vs. Movie (OSL runner-up), many victories vs. Mighty (ASL Participant), Noob (ASL participant), took 2 games vs. Snow. Dominate tvp player. When he won Tangu (Kor gamer, ~2700mmr) a few weeks ago, Tangu called him "Chinese flash". His tvz is also strong, as he almost beat Action in an ASL race war in June. His tvt is his weakest match-up.
Busterran: top 4 terran in China. Most known for his strong tvz, when he nuked Caicai countless times and made Caicai haters go insane. Solid tvp and tvt. ~2500mmr.
Xiaoxiaoma: top 4 terran. Known as "Chinese Fantasy". Crazy vulture control and shitty macro. He took the first game easily when he played with Best in a bo7 game and almost took another one when the two put on a great show of vulture vs. goons. He is semi-active recently due to health issues.
Loup: top 4 terran. Solid all-around player but his style proves to be too conservative at times.
AirChina: ex pro gamer. 38 years old and his old age has taken away his advantages at micro. ~2300mmr.

Thank you for these player write-ups!

good stuff
its nice to know that China has a strong scene with a ton of quality new players, haven't heard about any of those guys except for the super oldschoolers like F91/Jaystar/Fengzi/Rushgoon, maybe 1 day we'll get to see more of Sen/Lx/Pj
hopefully we can play more games vs Chinese players on Shieldbattery once its fully ready

I'll try to get more sponsors to support matches of Chinese players vs. non-Kor players. Money is not an issue as there are many rich sponsors in China who used to play BW when they were younger. The issue is lag and the effort it took to host. I had to give up bass fishing today to facilitate those matches I sponsored

ya it should be easier to manage on Shieldbattery, the ping is better (and they're still working to improve it even more for 2v2 ladder)

Let me add some updates about PJ and LX.
PJ has retired entirely from BW. The last game he played was around 2013-2014, when he won Mihu by 3:0 (Mihu was not as strong as he is today back then). He is playing poker full-time.
LX (short for his real name Luo Xian) also switched to poker around 2013. Unlike PJ, LX is still closely involved with the BW community today. This morning he advanced from Group C of the CSL round of 16. He beat Kukuboy by 2:0 in the first round, lost to Loup by 0:2 in the winners match and beat Kukuboy again by 2:0 in the final round. However, there are some controversies as LX didn't use his real ID to participate at the beginning - he created a new ID (Qiuqiu) and even a new WeChat account to register for the tournament and made sure nobody knows him. His opponent (Guoqian, another top 10 toss player) at the round of 32 thought this "Qiuqiu" was a lucky noob and didn't prepare pvp at all. It's safe to assume if LX got eliminated at the round of 32, he would not reveal himself.
LX is also viewed as a "comedian" than a serious BW player by many people nowadays. He watches live streams of other players every night, especially Caicaizerg's stream. And here goes the "LX loop": LX watched Caicai play for several days - LX thought: man, what a noob, let me teach him how to play BW - LX got annihilated by Caicaizerg and disappeared for several months - LX became itchy again and requested a rematch - GG and back to lurking. What is interesting is that he often chooses a date that is close to one festival in China for those matches, and he gained many new nicknames. For example, LX was destroyed by Caicai around the Mid-Autumn day, and he was called "Mid-Autumn Luo" for almost one year.
Earlier this week when Caicai was playing in group A of the CSL, LX couldn't help but make fun of Caicai, as he firmly believed Caicai stood zero chance of advancing from a group consisted of Mihu, Fengzi and Busterran. He commented in the chat room and promised he would give Caicai 200 million RMB if Caicai could advance as the no.1 from his group. One hour later, Caicai successfully advanced as the no.1 and hundreds of comments popped up asking LX to fulfill his promise. So as you guys can imagine, LX now has 200 million RMB in debt, and is known as "200mm Luo" in the BW community :p

Chinese players for BSL! Would be so gteat to have fresh new players playing in BSL proleague. Bonyth played on TR 24high so lag is not that bad

Some more info about how sponsorship works in the Chinese BW community.
Normally the streamers would only play against each other when there's a sponsor (we call a sponsor "boss" in China). There are different prices for bo3, bo5, bo9, even bo99 matches.
Most of the tournaments are sponsored by several top "bosses". The prize pool is normally $5,000+ for major tournaments and $2,000+ for smaller ones. Most of these matches will be streamed by Sanpao and Coach Zhu, the most influential commentators. During each match, "bosses" can add additional prizes in real-time. For example, some of the most popular prizes/tasks include: Nuke, Infest Terran command center, win by x:0, win a tvz game without scanning, etc. If the player successfully completed those tasks, he will get the extra money. Oftentimes the extra prize could be higher than the tournament prize.
Here's a real example when Caicai advanced from Group A of CSL this week: There's a $150 award for the round of 16; two Caicai fans donated $1,500 each; the sponsor of the tournament awarded an extra $4,000; many other bosses gave gifts ranging from $15 to $100; audiences gifted ~$2,500 in Caicai's stream.
Another big part of sponsorship is ladder games. Sponsors pay streamers to practice on Kor server. Each ladder win at 2000 mmr+ level can get a streamer $3-7.

China vs The West
series of showmatches with 5 to7 full games would be absolutely amazing for starters. Wondering if it would be possible to organize such a thing. Chinese scene sounds amazingly well run..

Thanks for the info @Calvinbobo, great to read about the Chinese BW scene. I second the China vs world(ex SK) showmatch :D
Would be great to see the scene turn up in various leagues.

What is this Shieldbattery? Is it some kind of VPN? If the lag issue can be resolved, I would definitely try to organize China vs. World ex Kor or China vs. EU/North America/LatAM matches. I remember there was a match of China vs. Germany more than 18 years ago.

I agree, that would be great to have some fresh blood in BSL.

If Chinesee players would like to participate in BSL, they are free to do so. In order to qualify, they need to be TOP20 of BSL13 Ladder Stage. @Calvinbobo where can we watch Chinese Star League (CSL)?? Very interesting to find out the BW scene in China is actually active
|
Do Chinese players generally follow the meta, or is there some internal balance difference? For example, maybe there is a dominant player that favors a certain build so much, that everyone else has to adapt by opting for counterstrategies that aren't in line with established Korean norms?

Thank you ZZZero. I am in the BSL chat group on Discord. I think it will be difficult for Chinese players to play due to lag, but a national clan war might be possible.

Great questions! Most Chinese players watch Kor pros and adapt new strategies & builds. There are a few players, such as Jaystar and Caicaizerg, who have their own understandings and different strategies. Mihu is the dominant player for the past two years, and his opponents would go all-in or maximize the economy from the beginning with the hope that he will play safe.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing this. National clanwar idea sounds great, too. Poland represent? and add Julia in roster xD

Thanks for yur update. A while back some chinese players participated in a foreign tournament - just wondering how they are doing. I think you listed some of them (caicai/jedi and jaystar) but how about players like klkl/heroes and the.wk??

I was thinking about how F91 embarrassed IdrA in the show match 12 years ago and IdrA complained that F91 didn't play like "you're supposed to" so I was curious whether this was a more wide-spread phenomenon Cheers!

There's BSL-YHMihu in the ladder at 2300-2400 mmr right now.
Foreigners, watch out.

Guys, I'm discussing a potential match of CN vs. Foreign players with the Chinese BW community. I'm thinking six 1v1 games and one ace game if needed. We will test connections soon. Hopefully, we can make it happen!

Why is BSL-YHMihu not appearing in the BSL Ladder list standings? Is China also geo-blocked by BSL like South Korea is??

This Mihu is the real one, I contacted him directly and helped him set up his BSL account, now linked to the BSL website. The same applies to BSL-Prettygirl, however, due to his VPN IP address, Prettygirl's flag is currently displayed as Hong Kong, which is incorrect.
You are welcome to contact and organise other Chinese players to participate in BSL. It will be useful to have a few others assist with the coordination process as my time zone is very inconvenient.

One question, BSL starts time at 18:30, +6 hours in China. So will Chinese players play so late for them?

oh damn.. if Mihu plays for real, that will stir things up a bunch, for sure

Oh I see. I asked a few other players but haven't checked with Mihu directly, my bad I'm already in discussion with BSL-Zero and he is setting up a foreign team. The Chinese lineup will be Mihu, Loup, Fengzi, Jedi, Qiaogege and Zhanhun after my discussion with Sanpao and Coach Zhu. Please add me on WeChat (my ID is nkubobo) and Discord (uncletoss#8488). It would be great if you can help. If things go as planned, we will have the list of BSL players soon and we will test connections this Saturday on both Kor server and BN China.

Hype

@Calvinbobo maybe its best to create a separate thread for this upcoming event and also put in the details for CSL plus links so everyone can be more aware of the BW community there in China?
Awesome to hear you and Zero are organizing a showmatch!

Yes, it will be fine for them as most Chinese players stay up pretty late.

PrettyGirl uses the ID "[Y.H]Bestt" in game, but he is known as "QiaoGeGe" in the community. As far as I'm aware, he is the third-best Protoss player in China and also has the best PvT records against top Chinese Terrans.

I just watched Bony vs Fengzi. I don't know what to say really Fengzi looked very washed up and apparently hes top2 zerg after jedi in china right now? Someone knows if hes super active these days?
