good stuff

its nice to know that China has a strong scene with a ton of quality new players, haven't heard about any of those guys except for the super oldschoolers like F91/Jaystar/Fengzi/Rushgoon, maybe 1 day we'll get to see more of Sen/Lx/Pj

hopefully we can play more games vs Chinese players on Shieldbattery once its fully ready

I'll try to get more sponsors to support matches of Chinese players vs. non-Kor players. Money is not an issue as there are many rich sponsors in China who used to play BW when they were younger. The issue is lag and the effort it took to host. I had to give up bass fishing today to facilitate those matches I sponsored

ShieldBattery to the rescue! Same as W3Champions for WC3, hopefully

Let me give a brief intro of active Chinese players:
Protoss:
Zhanhun: used to be the no.1 from ~2015-2017. He's still the best pvz player in China and he beats Jedi every time. ~2500-2600 mmr
Qiaogege: currently the best pvt player in China. ~2500mmr
AP: very good player overall but unstable, ~2500-2600mmr. He recently lost to Caicaizerg in an epic Bo9 game and Caicaizerg won $5000+.
Jaystar: former pro gamer. 40 years old. Still active but old age has gotten the best of him. ~2400mmr
Free: Chinese version of Free[gm]. Low APM, ~2400 mmr. His highlight was when he beat Zero (yes the ASL champion) last year 3:0 on ladder.
Kukuboy: one of the audiences' favorite. He can absolutely win anybody and lost to any weaker players. He is best known for his rival with Caicaizerg, when each game can easily last 1 hr. His highlights include his victory over Sorry (ASL participant) by 3:0.

you mean Bonyth?

lol..

GGs anyways

Yes I meant Bonyth. I sponsored a few matches for Dewalt a while ago so I tend to misspell their IDs lol

Yeah man that's awesome. Good on you and those other sponsors and organizers. There's generous supporters (like Rus_Brain, Purepat and CRVT) in China as well!

Congratulations so far Bonyth!

Let me add some updates about PJ and LX.

PJ has retired entirely from BW. The last game he played was around 2013-2014, when he won Mihu by 3:0 (Mihu was not as strong as he is today back then). He is playing poker full-time.

LX (short for his real name Luo Xian) also switched to poker around 2013. Unlike PJ, LX is still closely involved with the BW community today. This morning he advanced from Group C of the CSL round of 16. He beat Kukuboy by 2:0 in the first round, lost to Loup by 0:2 in the winners match and beat Kukuboy again by 2:0 in the final round. However, there are some controversies as LX didn't use his real ID to participate at the beginning - he created a new ID (Qiuqiu) and even a new WeChat account to register for the tournament and made sure nobody knows him. His opponent (Guoqian, another top 10 toss player) at the round of 32 thought this "Qiuqiu" was a lucky noob and didn't prepare pvp at all. It's safe to assume if LX got eliminated at the round of 32, he would not reveal himself.

LX is also viewed as a "comedian" than a serious BW player by many people nowadays. He watches live streams of other players every night, especially Caicaizerg's stream. And here goes the "LX loop": LX watched Caicai play for several days - LX thought: man, what a noob, let me teach him how to play BW - LX got annihilated by Caicaizerg and disappeared for several months - LX became itchy again and requested a rematch - GG and back to lurking. What is interesting is that he often chooses a date that is close to one festival in China for those matches, and he gained many new nicknames. For example, LX was destroyed by Caicai around the Mid-Autumn day, and he was called "Mid-Autumn Luo" for almost one year.

Earlier this week when Caicai was playing in group A of the CSL, LX couldn't help but make fun of Caicai, as he firmly believed Caicai stood zero chance of advancing from a group consisted of Mihu, Fengzi and Busterran. He commented in the chat room and promised he would give Caicai 200 million RMB if Caicai could advance as the no.1 from his group. One hour later, Caicai successfully advanced as the no.1 and hundreds of comments popped up asking LX to fulfill his promise. So as you guys can imagine, LX now has 200 million RMB in debt, and is known as "200mm Luo" in the BW community :p

Some more info about how sponsorship works in the Chinese BW community.

Normally the streamers would only play against each other when there's a sponsor (we call a sponsor "boss" in China). There are different prices for bo3, bo5, bo9, even bo99 matches.

Most of the tournaments are sponsored by several top "bosses". The prize pool is normally $5,000+ for major tournaments and $2,000+ for smaller ones. Most of these matches will be streamed by Sanpao and Coach Zhu, the most influential commentators. During each match, "bosses" can add additional prizes in real-time. For example, some of the most popular prizes/tasks include: Nuke, Infest Terran command center, win by x:0, win a tvz game without scanning, etc. If the player successfully completed those tasks, he will get the extra money. Oftentimes the extra prize could be higher than the tournament prize.

Here's a real example when Caicai advanced from Group A of CSL this week: There's a $150 award for the round of 16; two Caicai fans donated $1,500 each; the sponsor of the tournament awarded an extra $4,000; many other bosses gave gifts ranging from $15 to $100; audiences gifted ~$2,500 in Caicai's stream.

Another big part of sponsorship is ladder games. Sponsors pay streamers to practice on Kor server. Each ladder win at 2000 mmr+ level can get a streamer $3-7.

China vs The West

series of showmatches with 5 to7 full games would be absolutely amazing for starters. Wondering if it would be possible to organize such a thing. Chinese scene sounds amazingly well run..

What is this Shieldbattery? Is it some kind of VPN? If the lag issue can be resolved, I would definitely try to organize China vs. World ex Kor or China vs. EU/North America/LatAM matches. I remember there was a match of China vs. Germany more than 18 years ago.

3. I guess you all all familiar with Soma, who lost to Zero in Asl final. He is what he is today, largely because of a Chinese sponsor. The sponsor paid $50,000+ (rough estimate) for Soma to play against other top Kor players, so that he could grow that fast.

Can I also get some support and practice harder so I can become as good as Soma?
Trying my best for ASL, ASTL

Well, boys you know what you have to do now. Buy a ticket to China and play BW full-time there in the hopes of getting in on some of this sweet action. I mean how hard could it be to learn Chinese?
