Automated tournament is a sweety thing among all new stuffs from LOTV, but it feels like something missing.
Always I think automated tournaments is a great idea from Blizz, but the format can be improved. Now a "small' automated tournament is just 3 games in row where if you lose you're out, but nothing very exciting from this. You've got your ladder points if you win, and a tremendous! trophy if you know a nice end...so what When I watch pros tournaments, I like to analyse how the pros prepare a serie (BO3 or BO5) cauz it is all but a ladder session. You have to be agressive in the first game, maybe more macro oriented in the second, or to put a cheese...All those things create a real excitement, and something totally unavailable for me poor little gold sc2 player.
I would like Blizz change single elimination format in BO3 format for the automated tournaments. I know they will be longer, but today I think they just look like classic ladder games in a small tournament bracket.

problem with automated tournaments is the system is not yet set up to account for how many people tend to sign up and no-show or have to leave during them. even in bo1 there are a lot of dropouts. i mean, no-shows are a problem even in paid professional tournaments, i can't imagine how you can stop ladder players from doing it
if you start punishing people and making it more strict (like so you can't queue on ladder while signed up for a tournament etc.) then people are going to be less likely to play. but if you keep it loose like it is now then more people will play but more people will also drop out. it's not an easy thing to fix. hell, i quit and no-show to tournaments all the time
point being, making the tournaments longer and more involved isn't viable until the system is stable. i don't think ladder players want to spend hours invested in the current tournament system because it's not that attractive yet

There is also the fact that there arent enough people playing the tournaments. I signed up the other day only to be pitted against Incontrol in the first round (I am a diamond league player)...

What's the problem there?

The whole point of tournaments is indeed the fact that you can play more than one map, have different veto strategies depending on the matchup, and maybe win 2-1 instead of losing 0-1. When i realised automated tournaments were gonna be 3 bo1 in a row, finals included, i just stopped caring about them because It's basically ladder.
If they were bo3 or at least in the final i would exclusively play tournaments, as you still lose/win mmr points, and it's just so much more exciting, rewarding, and less coin flippy than ladder You could even win extra points for each boX win!
Now theres the problem of downtime which is an issue, but the current version is basically the ladder + downtime, not a tournament so why bother...

Yeah, of course, because there is no fun to play 3 BO1 in row for nothing more than some ladder points (and a trophy!) I am sure that if the format could be different as 3 BO3, more people might be interested. The challenge would be much higher.

Yeah, unbeliveable that the final is only a BO1. I was shocked when I realized this.

The problem with these tournaments is that it's scheduled. Who has the time to wait for a tournament to start? Why not just let me create a tournament and depending on my mmr people can join it. I am sure tournaments would be a lot more active if it would work like that tbh. Or even just completely custom tournaments, it's sad that blizzard cannot deliver a truly great experience there tbh, even "diabotical" will have a better ingame tournament system.

You also have to factor in that if you do a bo3, that you'll be using a different system then the rest of ladder, so possibly making the ladder less accurate.

It would take way too long if it was a bo3

imagine you get a walkover in one round, and your future opponent has a very tight series which ends up 2-1 after 3 30 minutes matches. Who in their right mind would wait for that amount of time ?

People who have done it for years on esl or other numerous sites where this was possible even at a low level I know i did, and i'm sure if it was ingame it would bring at least as many players as right now
