Coming from StarCraft 2: HOTS to Broodwar, I am quite lost. I have read a few posts here, but I am not even at the point where I can start to follow the posts. I'm not able to get to the point where I can find practice partners, or even ladder. I have played some campaign, and some games against computer opponents. I have been able to overcome pathing for most terran units, except when defending, blocking zerglings etc. I have also been able to figure out patrol micro with vultures, but only in small numbers(2-3), in larger numbers I have trouble managing them, or even making patrol micro work consistently). The "P" key is very far away. I'm not sure how to use camera hotkeys? do you use different keys to make them in broodwar?
Mostly lost when it comes just to basic functionality. As well as chat commands, how to add someone to a game, etc. I have watched a lot of broodwar, and played campaign in 2000-2001, but this is essentially my first time clicking on multiplayer for Starcraft 1.
I chose the Fish server because of what I have heard about hackers on iccup, and I don't feel comfortable playing on iccup unless I have some friends that I can trust.
- I have successfully installed the wLauncher for fish server - once wDetector was installed I decided to instal mca64Launcher (not sure if I shouldn't use it over wlauncher?) - I use mca64Launcher and trigger wDetector from there(in options under Fish server) - I have all kespa maps installed for 1v1. including obs versions I believe - would like to have apm counter and ingame clock to look similar to the ones korean's use on snipealot/afreeca; do they use chaoslauncher or something else?
If anyone is interested in helping me out, I can get teamspeak up or another program for communication. If not I guess I will try my best to move forward and figure this stuff out. D:
Thanks for reading.

I would highly recommend playing on iCCup and joining the channel: Op Teamliquid
To play on Fish, you'll need to be able to type with the hangul alphabet and read some basic Korean phrases. Using wLauncher also means you will need to reset your system locale to Korea, and then every time you host/join a game, type: 나는 한국인 (which is "I'm Korean" when translated literally) and this is, of course, if you don't get banned for not having the map downloaded.
Being able to host is pretty integral to playing nowadays, so you'll need to make sure you can host by opening a game and having someone join. You need to open port(s) 6112-6112 before you can host successfully, otherwise your firewall will prevent people from joining your game.
There also is the option of playing on Gameranger, which, actually, is not a bad place to start playing, EXCEPT THAT EVERYONE SPEAKS SPANISH.

I second the opinion that you should start out in iCCup. Although the server repeatedly gets criticized by some for the same problems, it's still the most reliable place to find games with foreigner without having to worry about Korean language and stuff. And I don't know what you heard about the hacks, but it's not that bad.

For this point, just play players who play with the antihack, (who are 98% of the players). I also recommend you to play iCCup. Take a look on the practice partners thread, play D-/D ladder games, and watch a lot of replays !
See you on op teamliquid !

you should defintely not play fish server, first it's a bit complicated and unrewarding as Nina pointed out, second you find enough games until you hit ~C rank on iccup and that should be quite a while for any beginner. I would recommend hanging out op TL, get noted on the "trainingspartner list" (thread somewhere here). If you host games, host as D- for starters. Yes you start as D ranked on ICCUP, but D- is often times correct for beginners. dont get annoyed because you might get the feeling all those D players are so much better than you, a lot of them are smurfs

Yeah the D through D+ range is more than enough for a beginner to handle on ICCUP.
No reason to go to FISH server and get massacred.

Thanks for the info on Op Teamliquid, I've been playing on iCCup the last few days but it's been hard to find games consistently. (Just checked the channel OP Teamliquid on iCCup, though, and the only user in the channel was Teamliquid. I'll have to check back later).
Concerning Gameranger, is there any more info you can give me about that? I speak Spanish, so it would be tons of fun. Is it easier to find a game there than on iCCup or US East? I'm only a D- or D player right now (same situation roughly as the OP, though I have played bw before but at a non-competitive level) so I don't want to get my feet wet on the Fish server quite yet xD

I wouldn't recommend starting on Fish... Besides the difficulty of getting a game, the skill level will be too high. ICCUP isn't that bad in terms of hackers I don't think, and in any case I don't think anywhere is safe if someone really wants to hack.
Getting games on ICCUP is far easier if you can host. If you have control of your router and can port forward 6112 so people can join your games it helps a lot.
edit: Also, don't worry about micro TOO much. Any macro and "positioning" is much more important. By positioning I mean "a" moving your troops in with proper angle, all together, but don't sweat the small micro tasks if it degrades your micro, because it doesn't matter if your 3 zealots kill his 3 zealots with 1 left over, if he has 3 more on the way and you don't.

Everything you know from SC2, forget it. BW is alot more refined and a higher skill cap than SC2.
Fish tends to be a higher skill cap than ICCup, so to start out learning, picking things up, get on ICCup first.
You're taking up Terran from what I gather to start?
|
Yeah I'd strongly suggest iCCup over Fish if you're a beginner. Even in unranked melee games most players there are equal to iCCup C- at least.
As for apm counter and game time, click on the little gear beside 'Shittyplugin' in mca64launcher and check the stuff you want.

This sounds like you're talking about east server. iCCup has its own antihack, although I don't know if it's up to date or not.
You can add friends by typing in /f add (username) and likewise you can type /f remove (username) to remove a friend. Chat is pretty easy. I always hold ctrl+enter for allies or ctrl+enter to message all depending on the chat default setting.
For camera hotkeys you hold shift+f2, f3, or f4. Best way to patrol micro I believe is to keep one hand on the patrol key repeatedly pressing it and the other on the mouse. A lot of this you can find in the keystrokes help section.
As for GameRanger, I wouldn't recommend it since 1v1 low money games are rare to come by and mostly fastest games are hosted with a few UMS games. The user base overall is smaller and less skilled. It's really funny.
If you want to PM me via teamliquid or Skype(Skype is..kamsenhen). I also have teamspeak. I can help you with the bare essentials of the game.

They aren't "smurfs". Everyone starts at D rank. Besides that, anyone at any letter level can be better than what you expect.

Welcome to BW! As others said, iCCup is a better place to start. Don't hesitate to visit Liquipedia's strategy section. Many builds are outdated, but the basics are still valid and covered pretty well. Terran Strategy Portal:Beginners

i'm starting up as well :D

Welcome to BW! You will lose over and over again vs other players but don't let discourage you! losing in bw is honorable! except maybe vs romanians! joke

As a player who has recently started playing Brood War (I started playing Starcraft 2: Wings Of Liberty first then to Starcraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm next) only 2 weeks ago, I am with you in this. Perhaps we could play together as practice partners someday?
PS: I usually play on iCCup now with Brood War along with Starcraft 2.

Hello all, sorry for the late reply. Been very busy at work. Come home late, eat some food, watch tv, chill out go to bed kind of thing.
Thanks for all the help and responses. I really appreciate it. My days off this week are wednesday and thursday. I'll probably do some serious BW games/coaching on skype on those days. For today though I'm probably just gonna jump onto op Teamliquid channel and try out a few practice games.
The iccup account that I made is: TR-FireBird
So if you see that name, its me! I will hang out in the channel for most of Sunday afternoon. Hope to see you guys there.
