Alright, so DJ Wilma here, wanting to rant about the pause feature in SCII!
Now this would only apply to ladder, and would have no effect on Custom Games (aka tournement games), but Blizzard should really implement a pause timer for ladder games, where the opponent can't unpause when the player goes AFK for a bit.
My reasoning behind this feature: - It creates a situation, where if a player really needs to go AFK for a bit, there is no way the opponent can unpause the game, causing them to lose that game. I am finding when someone is just so desparate for those ladder point, or cued up into a match up that they don't like, they will try and take advantage by unpausing after a short period of time. So, if the opponent pauses, you can't unpause for a certain ammount of time (maybe 30-40 seconds) and after that time has elapsed, you can unpause the game (if you choose) if your opponent has not returned. - I know there maybe issues after a player has effectively lost, that one can pause the game, all three times, delaying the player from winning the game. This could maybe corrected by taking in account the duration of the game, or if Blizzard could get fancy, if there is a significant difference in supply that the timer is eliminated. - This feature may also create massive ammounts of trolling, so if a player is frequently pausing games, their timer maybe eliminated as well.
Obviously I am mainly suggesting this fix due to the fact of having to quickly go AFK near the beginning of a game, and the opponent unpaused about 8 seconds after I left, cause me to just fall behind to a point where there was no return.
I know this situation doesn't come up very often, and I'd like to think that most SCII players are mannered people who just want to enjoy the game that Blizzard developed for us, but it just pisses me off when people do this.
Just a thought....
Much Luv

I think players will almost always fall into one of two categories:
1. Those who respect their opponents enough to wait at least 30 seconds anyway (your recommended time) when an opponent asks for a pp (pause please).
2. Those who don't want to wait for any pauses, who would instead argue that you shouldn't be playing the game if you're going to be pausing it and putting off your opponent who actually wants to play, and not sit staring at his screen.
Personally, I fall into the first category, but I understand the second's argument. I hate asking my opponent to pause the game, I rarely ask such a thing, and I'm always paranoid that he'll just unpause it after five seconds anyway.
I think it's just important to recognize that you're putting off your opponent by pausing the game. You're wasting his time. They're doing you a service by waiting patiently, and they can wait for as long (or as short) as they want. Implementing any timer where your opponent can't unpause the game will just end up being another BM tactic.

Err, I think I misunderstood/\

The amount of people that would spam pause when they were losing would make this feature terrible, imo.
Your opponent is not obligated to wait for you to come back from being AFK. If it's that urgent you should forfeit the game.

The other guy may be desperate for ladder points but on the flip side who cares if you lose one game.

No I understand, but its just ppl like this give SCII players bad names >.>

Dunno. I find it a bit disrespectful to pause in a ladder game where you don't even know the person. Why waste their time? If I really needed to go do something urgent then I would just leave the game instead of pausing and making them wait.
Also, your idea is horrible. People will already pause the game before they leave sometimes just to be a dick, now you want that to prolong the game for another 2 minutes? No thanks.

I can honestly say it was a waste of time to read this :/
You had a bad experience. Unbunch your panties and move on. You're never going to go anywhere if you blame little things or big things on the game. In the time you wrote that you could have played at least 10% of another game and you'd be 10% further than you are now.
You went afk, it probably irritated them, they unpaused. No big deal. They aren't obligated to wait on you. Is it polite? Yeah. Is it really that malicious to decide not to wait for you after its clear you've gone afk? Not really.
And your idea is very dumb. It actually creates more opportunities to fuck up the game than it fixes.
Just wow dude. Think this through and you'll hopefully realize how petty it is.

lol... I don't think it's that bad. If I'm not mistaken, HoN (heroes of newerth) has such a feature, and you actually freeze not 1 but 9 people. So what, can't spare 30 freaking seconds?
That being said, it could be abused. But it's not abused that much in HoN, which arguably has the worst population of gamers/ragers known to man.
All in all, who cares, it's not like a blog in TL would change anything anyway.

It's all about respect your opponent. If your not capable to wait for a couple of seconds or maybe a minute until he's back then really u need to ask yourself what the hell is wrong with u...sometimes the phone rings or maybe u need to pee or something else...i know it's shocking to some ppl but this things do happen.

Dunno, I just wish people actually state why they pause instead of just "pp". Then I know how long I'll have to wait.
But if someone "pp" for longer than 10 seconds or so, then I just put in "i'll be back in 1 minute" then tab out to a nyt article or something. Then by the time I'm back, he's back too. Plus, if someone pauses, he'll usually wait for me to get back before unpausing due to the basic human tendency to abide by the give and take principle.
As for me pausing, if I need to be afk for longer than a few minutes, I just type "gtg" then leave the game. If it's shorter, I usually just give 'em a time like be back in 30 secs or something. If they unpause during that time, then I just play when I get back and hopefully win so they'll feel like shit. Passive agressive troll ftw.

HoNs way with dealing stuff is very questionable, for example when someone in your team feeds like 0/30/0 and you stay in fountain and get reported you get banned. In HoN the pause abuse wouldnt work because theres always one black sheep in a team who will unpause in your team if you paused (If one team pauses, 5 players decided to pause). Starcraft is 1on1 theres is no teammate who can instantly unpause(It'll get abused as shit). Also HoN Games are used to be much longer than sc2 games why 1 minute pause doesnt change the amounts of games you play, but in Starcraft 2 it would.

Honestly, ive played thousands and thousands of games and rarely have had to pause for something important that I could not wait for till after the game.
If I know I have important things to do, or somewhere to be, I do not play and waste other's or my own (because I'll be distracted anyway.. no concentration = no win) time.

Don't queue up for a game if you don't have time to play it out uninturrupted. In the rare case that something does come up that can't wait just take the loss and move on. Other people can choose to wait for you if they want but it's a courtesy, not a requirement.
|
If you need to take a phonecall, just take it and leave the game. It's just ladder points. I wouldn't wait any more than 10 seconds for a pauser, and I only pause if it's to change a setting or something.
|
I think people should almost always give each other a minute here or there if they need it. But I don't think this should be a feature. I prefer to go by the kindness of other players.
And ultimately, while I find it obnoxious if someone won't let me pause for 10-20 seconds, I'm happy just to leave the game if need be.

Play the game as if pausing doesn't exist. If someone grants you a pause, treat it like they're doing you a favour.
So in this case, no one is at fault and you deserved your loss.
