Very nice spreading ! I would like to see it this way.

Gotta scratch my head at the spread it to everyone option. $156 for each of the 32 players does pretty much nothing for the effort involved. He goes from having to worry about getting money to 8 players to all of a sudden 32 players. Adding it to the Top 8 at least gives them something more to play for or hell even the showmatch option would be fun. Make 5 polls with 5 matches each and let the community decide. $700 first, $300 second. One match per player to get as many people involved.

I think everyone at some level agrees that it should go into the prize pool and that prize pools need to be less top-heavy. But am I the only one who doesn't like the idea of prizes for people who go out first round at invitational tournaments? I really think we need this to be more of a sport and less of a popularity contest. I wouldn't mind them getting a little, but my vote would be to spread it in the top 16.

how has this thread not been closed? I started the same one.. it was closed in 4 minutes . Oh well..
IMO.. the money should be spread out further down. This event is about a celebration of the players and making SC2 more fun and intimate.
Adding money only to 1st place now.. kinda takes away from those that already have no chance.
Maybe put some towards a few show matches..
Maybe towards some 'awards' for sportsmanship.. best poker player... so on.
But overall.. this should be about spreading it out to as many of the players as possible.

You make a great point.. especially about it needing to be more like a sport.. but I think in this case, for this type of event, it should be spread out even more. This event was really about the players and combining a real competition with a 'home' feel to it. When I welcome people into my home..I want to host them by offering them all some of my hospitality. I think that is the idea here.
I would spread it out to at least the top 16.. those that advanced from the group stage and I would offer up some show matches or something for those that did not advance.. for an opportunity to feel a bit more included.
It's too bad that Twitch.TV did not announce this BEFORE Group stages were almost completed though.

Prize money doesn't matter to me, only production quality.

I think spreading it across all players spreads it too thin. I think there should be 3 categories all the players secretly vote on, like in a beauty pageant. Mr. Congeniality etc. Winners split the cash.

$5000 dance contest
MC would be happy

The problem with that is that some of the lower tier players don't get a lot of money from their teams, don't get money from winning the tourny, and won't even be able to come to a lot of tournaments if there isn't some kind of compensation. I mean, look at it like this: You spend a week or two planning your trip, then you buy a ticket to fly out there, spend a couple of days there, and you go out first round, which under your system means you get nothing. So now you've essentially spent 1-2 weeks of working for no pay. Now, the tournament sponsors and the tournament itself still gets the money from your match, but under your system you made them money and didn't get anything at all. You may as well have not even gone, but if you do that then the tournament is not really going to work. If only the richest and absolute best players can even afford to play then the viewership will probably not grow out of the niche it's in. There would be no up and coming players because only established names would be able to compete in the big-time tournaments.
In "real sports" the players usually have teams that pay them salary, or a league that sets a minimum, or a players union that can argue on their behalf. In e-sports, it is not so established and therefore much harder for the little guy to be able to support himself and turn himself into a big guy.

Pimpest play awards - make this happen!!!!!
EDIT: The reason why I think this is the superior idea is because no other league or cup honours the pimp plays that we are blessed with throughout said tournaments, and so far this tournament has definitely seen some pretty cool moves (i.e. Grubby reinventing the townportal in SC2).
Doing this would definitely set HSC apart from other tournaments and even act as an epic highlight reel whilst at the same time hopefully provide players with a bit more of an incentament to think outside the box...

take half of it and donate it.. rest to the top 8

i would love to see some showmatches for like 100-200$ each, share the rest between top 8 and give every player one case with beer

aaaaannnd i want the remaining 1000 bucks for Showmatches....like 5 showmatches, chosen by the community who will play and 200 for each winner....
wouldn't that be nice?
Also big shoutous to TwitchTV the LEADING platform when it comes to streaming <3<3<3<3
edit: now they get bucks instead of bugs ^^
Another option: Keep the $5000 for HomeStory Cup 5 with a prize distribution similar to the above quote (just make sure to bump the prize distribution to $20000 for HSC 5 if possible or just keep it the same as the current one). The current prize distribution (before any additions) is quite agreeable. Thumbs up! Keep up the good work! Keep the ball rolling! (don't let it stop!)
