You can enchant weapons with Soul Trap so they steal souls if you kill the enemy within 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. seconds. It's particularly useful with daggers and Sneak, which kills stuff in one shot anyway. Furthermore, you can just buy filled gems from merchants, albeit a bit expensive at first unless you can save up and manage to get the Banish enchantment.

Yes, you can buy full soul gems and enchant with them or get a weapon with a soul trap enchantment that automatically fills soul gems. But soul trap is a low level conjuration spell anyway. You only need like 25 conjuration or something, I recommend getting it.

I just got the game so it doesn't matter too much, but it's really frustrating. Yes, I think this is one of the many annoying problems with the PC version. So far the solution I found for this is to use the favourite menu. So press f on the spells you want to favourite, then hotkey them say 1. Sparks and 2. Flames. To put Flames on the right hand, press 2 twice, then put Sparks on the left by pressing 1 once.

From stealing/looting I already had enough soul gems for around 50 skill or something, and buying a few gems every vendor I visitted and continuing looting I actually did reach 100 skill without casting soul trap once (It's easier to just kill enemies than worry about soul trapping them when you cast destruction spells ).

Do mages get more badass spells or sneak get harder or something? its an ego thing

It becomes stale when you start oneshotting everything and a boss does like 5%/hit. If I played against enemies who could oneshot me, sure I had to reload a couple times and I had to make sure mages were out of mana before I could go into melee, but I wouldn't want it any other way. But I do agree, if you start glitching enemies so you can kill them at range without being able to get hit, it's just cheating.

Do mages get more badass spells or sneak get harder or something? You scale pretty hard. As long as the build you are doing makes the slightest sense, at some point the game becomes very easy. I started at expert, and at some point i did not feel threatened by anything at all anymore, so i turned it up to master, and it was better. I have got the feeling that this game has actually an inverse diffculty arc, where it becomes easier over time. For another thing, i think a useful information would not be a strict build, but actually percs you would NOT take again. For me, those are: Frost Casting in general, since i got the feeling that most stuff i meet has resistance against it (not exactly unexpected, we are in Skyrim after all), but especially the perk that stuns a low-Hp enemy, or any similar one. You have already got a stun with Destruction Dual Casting, and this one only triggers at about 10% HP, and at that point your enemy is probably already nearly dead. Mana return on capturing a soul. Completely useless. It might make sense when you get the one following it because you use a lot of enchanted weapons, but i don't really believe so.

There are also some "lazy" perks. For example, being able to sell your items to any merchant or being able to sell stolen items to non-fences are what I call lazy perks. It's fairly simple to sell items to the correct merchants, and except for gold limitations, you should have no problem doing so. However, you can spend some points to be lazy if you wish. These perks aren't as bad as the infinite resource ones since they provide a small benefit, but they should be avoided unless you enjoy the benefits they provide. I could elaborate and list all of them, but this should be a good basis to make an informed decision

For example, the indestructible lockpicks are useless because it's fairly easy to maintain a large supply of them if you buy them at every opportunity (they're cheap and weightless). Weightless armor seems good at first as well, but you'll reach a point where you don't even bother looting because you have infinite gold (or just loot the big ticket items to keep your cash pile growing). At this point weight becomes meaningless and those perks are wasted. With proper follower use, weightless armor is even more pointless before you even reach this point. Consider the steed stone if you're having problems prior to reaching a nice place (+100 carry weight and weightless armor). :| Sneak is affected by armor weight.

You have already got a stun with Destruction Dual Casting, and this one only triggers at about 10% HP, and at that point your enemy is probably already nearly dead. To piggy-back off this: I went Ice/Fire on my mage with the mind-set that "anything that resists fire will die to frost, and against melee opponents frost is really good because it drains their stamina" Two problems: 1. Just about everything is vulnerable to fire anyway, while far less is vulnerable to frost. What isn't your companion can probably kill pretty easily, unless it's a dragon, in which case can STILL use fire just to stun them constantly (and use frost if you really want to end it faster, either way though, you're fine), or they're a fire mage, and you'd be better off with lightning perked up than frost. 2. It doesn't matter how much stamina your opponent has when you can stun them until they are dead.

As I understand it correctly, you can learn it if you disenchant something that give +x% to alchemy, but I've never found anything like that. i know i found it on a ring. That doesnt help you find a way to get it specifically, but i guess it reaffirms for you at least that it does exist.

I start on expert, then ramp it up when I find things being a bit to easy.
