MBCGame to shut down? - Page 54

Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it.

If a media company wants to shut this down, it will be apparent to other company that this is not sustainable. Unless the board of a company or some sort of high enough reputation person has enough passion and interest in it, otherwise it is very unlikely that the broodwar/esports scene will be able to gain any enterprise support anymore. Yes, this is the general concern. I'm pretty sure Broodwar was (probably still is) the most successful esport they've ever had on television, so if a company that has been deeply involved for years is pulling out, it casts a long shadow across every other game. No BW players will switch to SC2 because of this, there isn't any less money in BW because of this, it's just that there will only be about half as many televised games as before.

That's kind of a contradiction. If there's less games on TV, there's less advertising which means less money in the sport.

The money in BW will drop directly because of this. Even if you exclude the prize money for winnings and the bonuses in player contracts, the money will still drop. The reason sponsors pay players is because the exposure they get makes the investment worthwhile. Having 50% of your exposure disappear is going to make that value drop significantly, which means salaries will also drop.

I guess the chances of a new tv channel taking it's place are pretty slim :/ Do we know what happens to SPL now? I mean now they can't play 2 matches at the same time anymore.

I remember reading somewhere that a problem with recreating BW feel was due to the fact that in BW a unit can only move in 16 different directions whereas in SC2 its pretty much infinite. Theres not point if it looks like BW but doesn't feel like BW.

Theres not point if it looks like BW but doesn't feel like BW. It's possible that someone would figure it out, or that Blizzard could actually just make a setting for this in the editor. They constantly update the SC2 map/mod editor to have new features that are only useful in very limited circumstances. This could be one of those circumstances.

Yeah but the viewership wasn't high enough to continue it after 2006, which is why in 2007 it was on G4 and now they don't do it at all anymore. To be fair, it was highlight clips and a general overview of each tournament with a good production value and it wasn't anything close to live (The first episode aired like 8 months after the first event). Meaning as of right now, there isn't really a good market for it to be successfully put on television outside of Korea.
