o my fucking god i just saw this on gamespot.com forums. I listen to this radio station like everyday, on my way to school, going home from work ETC. Well anyway i remember they have this WATER DRINKING CONTEST (if it wasnt enough for that one torture case of i think it was a frat making this kid drink gallons of water...) ANYWHO my former favorite radio station 107.9 THE end from sacramento basically palys the coolest pop hits that i listen to.
Their just like any other radio station they give out stuff listen to stuff talk to people etc.
Well theres a contest where they see who can drink the most WATER basically without peeing. Im not sure how much time they were given but they had to down like 100 ounces of water something like that.. and as it progresses they move u up in yet BIGGER water. I like how fucking whoever organized this didnt even test it, or see any of the precaution of doing this(i mean if it can save a life wtf are they thinking). Anyhow this mother age 28 who was in the contest was found dead due to water intoxication according to the coroner's office. This really sickens me because i was hearing about it and they were even joking how not enough water was given to contestants blah blah i knew something like this was gonna happen. Note checkout the catchy name "Hold Your Wee for a Wii".... good god have some common sense what kind of competition is that.
anyhow heres the full story

Sounds like something a POP music station would do. But i never knew you could die from drinking too much water. Are they going to sue?
|
To be fair, I think that it is excusable for the radio station to have thought water to be safe. It is terrible that the lady died, don't get me wrong. I don't think anyone can really be blamed.
|
I had no idea that was even possible--one would think that one's bladder would give out before one's actual life--but this isn't the first time I've heard of such a contest. I was watching a Japanese game show once in which the contestants had to eat a ton of spicy food but were allowed all the water they wanted. Then in the next round, there was a machine that gently beat on the area between the crotch and the belly button (give it a try the next time you really have to pee), and it was an elimination contest; whoever held out the longest moved on.
Added: Still, the whole incident is tragic. I sort of figured that, out of everything we consumed in this world, water would be the most innocuous. I guess it really is everything in moderation.

wtf is wrong with ppl... i remember a girl at my school in highschool ate like 52 recees cups to get an A in her history class. Idiots

I am surprised more people don't realize that drinking too much water can be deadly. My understanding is that it can cause too much swelling in the brain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_toxicity You learn something new everyday...
The concept is basic chemistry: osmosis. Cells in your body need both water and electrolytes to function properly. When you drink too much water, it saturates your system and your blood becomes too hypotonic (too much water, not enough solutes.) As a result, electrolytes are flushed out of the cell while water rushes in. One of the most common consequences is that red blood cells literally explode because too much water is going into each cell.

It's kind of stupid to blame the radio station, and sorry to say this, but I don't mean any offence: it's an american thing. You have to blame someone, you have to sue the radio station. WHY?? If I'd tell a 28 year old woman to jump from the 20th-floor of a building for a free car would she do it?
I feel sorry for her, but it wasn't really the radio station who should have considered water is bad for your health it's the people who choose to drink it! I can see how this could be blamed on the radio station if there were kids in it or so, but at that age you should ask yourself some questions before doing crap like that.

Yea but people get carried away. Theres other factors such as Pressure, or not thinking enough/lack of proper support. I dont konw what to say this contest was ridicoulous to start out with. They shoulda done like a donut or sausage eating contest instead. But not stuff like water where it's harder to realize where ur limit is...
|
They should have done a Mentos and Diet Coke contest. Eat about 3-4 mentos without chewing them then drink as much Diet Coke as fast as you can. And have someone film it even!

... I thought it was fairly well known that too much water does this.

!! Guess I'm smart after all !

If you drink too much water you flush all the minerals from your system... your pee should never be white, it should always be a little bit yellowish... 2 L of water MAX per day... 1.2 L minimum.. spread over the entire day of course..
personally, i found that I drank too much water and couldn't understand why I always looked so pale and "flushed"... then I realised the water was literally draining all the nutrients I was taking in... like DJ said... EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!!!! VARIETY VARIETY VARIETY!!!

I live in Sacramento and I listened to the 107.9 contest live on my way home.
"Hold Your Wee for a Wii" was a funny contest. It was fun to a lot of people that entered as well as for the listeners.
I think she was either the lady that got the 1st place prize, the Nintendo Wii, or the other lady that placed 2nd to receive a consolation prize, a pair of pop concert tickets. Both females out lasted several big males in the contest. I recall the lady that got first place, could drink more if she wanted, but the 2nd lady wasn't feeling so good so she opt out and got the consolation prize.
It is unfortunate that the lady died, but let's be serious.. who the hell is gonna predict that someone is going to die from drinking water? Drinking water is nothing compared to the other funny contest they have.
I recall they both drank more than 1 gallon of water. I'm not a big guy and during the summer, I drink almost a gallon a day.
Let's not overreact if we don't know the complete story. Should we start banning hot dog eating contest too?

Agreed.

If only these people would be more educated and try consuming things like ecstacy. One of the first things you learn (assuming you research drugs before you try them out) is that it's far more likely to be harmed by drinking too much water than you are by consuming the actual drug.
These people need to get their act together and set their priorities straight. Doing drugs = good. Entering Drinking Water Contests = bad.

that's absolutely tragic, i wonder what it'd be like dying from water overdose.

“I was talking to her and she was a nice lady,” Ybarra said. “She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids.”
That's sad. T_T

The ironic thing is that this might not have happened had it been alcohol instead of water.

On the contrary, if she drank as much alcohol as she did water to the point where she suffered from water toxicity, she would die instead from alcohol poisoning. Either way, too much of anything can kill.
