William "Chobra" Cho, OGN Creative Director and Global Relations Advisor, is the star of the 63rd episode of my 'Grilled' interview series.
Being as Chobra has lived in South Korea and the USA for a number of years, being fluent in both English and Korean, the interview sees him explaining and exploring the context of Korean gaming culture for Westerners. The focus is often on matters specific to LoL, but we discuss BW heavily in the first section and a number of the later topics contain interesting information for StarCraft fans.
Some of the topics discussed: - How accepted gaming is in Korean families. - How big BW was at its peak, its penetration into the culture and when it began to wane in terms of viewing numbers. - How LoL in Korea compares to BW's peak. - The team house environment and expectations placed on pro players. - Korean fan culture and its, at times, extreme nature. - Korean gaming organisations operating as companies, with strict hierarchies. - Chobra's personal approach to interpreting.
The entire 2h23m video interview can be watched at Team Acer.
2 hours and 23 minutes? Wow Thorin, I love your interviews, but... Holy shit. 143 minutes? Damn. Thanks for the interview though, it's sure to be an interesting one with some of the topics listed.
anyone summarize the main points? i'm a starcraft player, not a civilization player. Neither am I goody and so I don't have the attention span for this

good idea, in fact now I think I'll play a game of civ and watch a goody replay while I listen to this one

I think the Youtube video has anchors so you can just jump to whatever you want to listen to

They really need to learn how to do condensed interviews and get right to the meat or focus on separate issues for an episode and then re-invite a guest again. I will try to watch parts of this when I find the time to because I like the work Chobra does. I can see why you made it long winded but please keep in mind not everyone wants to sit through 2.5 hours of content. It's not just you. It's JP and just about everyone else for that matter too. You guys need to plan/cut better.
I respectfully disagree. There's a lot of different types of interviews and this is clearly one that tries to go beneath the surface and delve deep into the guest's thought process. The only criticism I have is that the interviewer occasionally seems to be somewhat unable to formulate the questions accurately and instead talks for 5 minutes straight before finally allowing Chobra to reply.

Your criticism would fall under tact and that ties into planning.
Perhaps it's different in LoL now, but in BW the star power of an individual player was very important to the team, despite how much in decline they were performance-wise. (Referring to the players that got cut, that is.) But it makes more sense that they would be axed for the good of the team's success, whereas Reach and Yellow could warm the KT bench while looking sharp.
