The 2013 season ended with the Chicago Blackhawks steamrolling everyone, earning the President's Trophy before defeating the Boston Bruins 4-2 in the Finals. Pattie Cabbie Kane is your playoff MVP. The lockout ended on January 13, 2013, and teams played a 48-game season only against interconference opponents.

Hart Memorial Trophy: Alex Ovechkin (32 G, 24 A, 56 P)
Vezina Trophy: Sergei Bobrovsky (21-11-6, 2.00 GAA)
Calder Memorial Trophy: Jonathan Huberdeau (14 G, 17 A, 31 P)

Goals Leader: Alex Ovechkin (32)
Assists Leader: Martin St. Louis (43)
Points Leader: Martin St. Louis (60)

So what is new this year?

New conferences

Cap recapture Penalty
Just read this. This is why Kovalchuk's contract was so toxic and forced the Devils to void it rather than fight it.
http://www.capgeek.com/recapture-calculator/

New cap limits: $64.3/44 ceiling and floor, down from $70.2/54.2 last season.

To get to this level, each team is allowed two total compliance buyouts, either this offseason (it is too late now) or next offseason. The league allowed teams a special buyout period before the 2013 season. The Canadiens and Rangers were the only two teams to use the period. The compliance buyout period is over for this offseason.

Player movement:

Compliance Buyouts:
Chicago - Steve Montador (D), Rostislav Olesz (LW)
Detroit - Carlo Colaiacovo (D)
Minnesota - Tom Gilbert (D)
Montréal - Scott Gomez (C; before 2013 season), Tomas Kaberle (D)
New Jersey - Johan Hedberg (G)
NY Islanders - Rick DiPietro (G)
NY Rangers - Wade Redden (D; before 2013 season)
Philadelphia - Daniel Brière (C), Ilya Bryzgalov (G)
Tampa Bay - Vincent Lecavalier (C)
Toronto - Mike Komisarek (D), Mikhail Grabovski (C)
Vancouver - Keith Ballard (D)
Washington - Jeff Schultz (D)

The Fucked Off to Europe List:

Leo Komarov
Alex Burmistrov
Sergei Kostitsyn
Ruslan Fedotenko
Ilya Kovalchuk

Important trades:
The Devils acquired goaltender Cory Schneider from the Canucks in exchange for the 9th overall pick in the draft Sunday

The Stars acquired centers Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley from Boston in exchange for Loui Eriksson. There were other pieces.

The Senators acquired winger Bobby Ryan from the Ducks for Jakub Silfverberg, some dude and a 1st

Ugh lets get to page two asap so I don't have to look at Patrick Kane's dumb face.

I am somewhat disappointed that the Red Wings decided to sign an aging Alfredsson and let the young guy with potential (Brunner) walk. Its not like they are in WIN NOW mode....

Nice! Looking forward to a full season.

Really hope the Leafs remain a playoff team this year, was nice to watch them in the post season despite their epic collapse.
Y'know sometimes people ask me y'know like "What's your religion and stuff?" And I'm like "y' know it's like RTS." Uh, and they're like, "What's that?" And I'm like, "Y'know it's kinda like, kinda like Buddism."

Nice OP.

I liked most of what Homer did this offseason but seems like it's gonna be the return of the goalie circus/graveyard whatever you wanna call it in Philly. Division D is also kinda cool because you have the old Atlantic division with 3 mediocre teams added to it.

As someone who lives in the Vancouver area and isn't a fan of the Canucks, I am greatly looking forward to plenty of Torts sound bites.

Also Hextall got hired as assistant GM in Philly. <3

I'd say Dallas are the winners of the offseason, instantly rebuilding their team now and for the future while moving into the division where they are legitimately a top 3 team, well behind Chicago and St. Louis but onpar with the Mild and the rest of the garbage.

Biggest losers, harder to tell -- as a Red Wings fan I want to say the Wings, they signed a mediocre 2nd center for 5 years and an aging winger and once again are shuffling around their youth in the bottom 6th while their d corps is as leaky as ever. If the Leafs werent their division I'd say the Red Wings will be the team that drops out of playoffs spot but it will be the Leafs, you can bank on it. They will be replaced by the Blue Jackets, whose GM has made a series of moves that are similar to what Dallas is trying to do and undone years of incompetence in a short season -- I imagine most Canuck fans once they move onto their depressive side of their manic-depressive season (look for lots of cup talk in Oct/Nov/Dec before the wheels fall off in Feb when one of the Sedins breaks his foot blocking a shot on a pk) hope they get one of those GMs soon to clean up the mess the alcoholic currently in place has made.

Had Philly not become a train wreck over the last two years and Kovy had not ran away to Europe to get more dirty money, I would enjoy D the most since you have a good mix of established and young up and coming teams. So that makes it A, with 3 good teams, 3 crap teams and two who-the-fuck-knows. Plus, watching the Sedins play 10 minutes a game because they arent back checking will be funny.

Oh god I missed that, JimmyJ and lamprey are the same person? I actually just argued a point to lamprey, and JimmyJ categorized my words as straw man. I feel like such a fool!

Should be a fun season. Hope we get to see Crosby play healthy, it's been tough to see the league's best player deal with such a nasty injury. Also yea, Sub40, I'll give it until November when the Sedins start getting the Gaborik treatment.

Moving from PHI to SF next month, anyone here a Sharks fan?

I don't think that anyone's surprised that they're the same person. But what about KelianQatar?!

I hope that Gillis does something good soon. Losing Schneider, Lapierre, Mason Raymond and Roy and only signing an at best 3rd pairing defenseman and some 4th liners isn't much fun.

Thanks for the great OP! I too was confused that the Wings signed Alfredsson and Weiss. But we will see what happens.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought lamprey1 was JimmyJRaynor. Lol

I couldnt get over how gross that pic of Kaner was. I was gonna go with a drunk one but shit son, he looks hammered there

I am a big fan of the new Patrick. I also like B, and would have loved it more if Detroit stayed there, time zones and historic rivalries be damned. I'll give a more fleshed out respoinse tomorrow but I agree, I do like what Dallas did. Detroit, I wouldn't really classify them as losers, but not really winners either. DOnt get giving up on Brunner so early, and they didnt do anything to address the D really. I dunno, they seem that theyre slooooowly heading down a slide to be a bubble team unless they hit gold on some of those young guys like nyquist and tartar.

I think Philly and probably toronto would be my biggest losers. Philly def #1 because I dont understand how you could be that willfully ignorant about your team needs. Toronto felt like they went the rangers circa early 00s route of just doing shit for the sake of doing it. Bernier was the only decent move, but even then, I would have much rather had Schneider than a wildcard with high potential, and he wasnt much more expensive. I hate the Clarkson and Bozak deals.

I have to disagree with you again, Quantic. PHI got the best forward available, the best defenseman available, and a cheap but decent goaltender. There are a lot of ways for them to be cap compliant on day one, and then by using LTIR on Pronger they will have plenty of wiggle room. There were no high-quality goaltenders available. And the success of many teams shows that you don't need stellar goaltending to be a cup contender.

Toronto, OTOH, lost two of their best and youngish players, and signed a decent 3rd liner to 1st line money, and are treating Bozak like he can actually play as 1C. I agree that those contracts are awful, and those are far more detrimental to their team than what the Flyers did.

IMO Boston and Chicago could still be the two favorite yet again this year. Boston has improved imo with the coming of Eriksson. Horton and Seguin wont be missed imo and Iginla could spark some lines.

Have no clue what to think about my Habs after the signing of yet another small forward. Hopefully MAB hasn't finished his work. I really hope we get rid of Pleky or Gionta (because we all know DD is untradable) so the youngsters can grow properly.

Philly had absolutely no need for another forward. That was just a silly signing. I also really dont think he was the best forward avaiable due to his age cost and general ability at this stage in his career.

Streit is no where near the player he was a few years ago, and he was never particularly good in his own end, which is where philly's weakness is. Furthermore, I beleive that's an over 35 contract, and it's a hell of a lot of money for a guy who is an offensive defensemen and ok in his own end. It doesn't really address a need.

Emery was protected by a team that was good enough to get the president's trophy, and he played limited games in a back up role. He was never really close to legit #1 guy, even when he was healthy. He's also got wonky Bo Jackson hips, and needs 2 hours to stretch even if he is just backing up. He's going to die on the ice if he gets more than 35-40 games, and that means Mason is getting starts which is bad bad bad. Furthermore, you had Bernier and Schneider out there for very reasonable prices, and if you wanted to go full retard, Lu was out there. The only positive about this is that it is very low risk, unlike the other deals Homer signed.

Also, for the teams that prove you don't need stellar goaltending to win, they do have something else: a very good defense, and philly's is no where near that, even with streit.

Philadelphia just likes having all the forwards I guess. Lecavalier should still be a productive, if not tradeable, player by the end of his contract. Streit's contract probably carries two years of 3rd-line usage. It was definitely a year or two too long, but isn't that bad in comparison to some of the other deals thrown out there.

I do agree that it's unlikely that PHI wins a cup with this defense, but it's not unfathomable to make the playoffs and win a few rounds. There is concern about Emery for sure, I guess it's just me being an optimist about his injury history. Bernier isn't exactly a sure thing either. He has a very small body of work, and got a big payday based on potential. No one saw the Schneider deal coming. PHI could have offered the 11th pick and something valuable, which would be much more enticing than just the 9th pick for sure (although VAN was nuts about Horvath). PHI wasn't the only team that missed out on Schneider's availability, VAN messed that up by not shopping him.

My hope for the goalies is league-average.

Nowhere near as bad as Toronto's moves. Nor as baffling as Nashville's absurd signings of more 3rd line players.

NJ is done this year i don't see them going far with clarkson and kovalchuk gone, 2 players michael ryder can't replace.

So boston has iginla jagr and erikson? omg... why

this years is the SEN'S year. with karlson and spezza back + bobby ryan added to the team holy shit

tampa is gonna look good with Valteri Filpula in the mix(even tho they still have no defense whatso ever)

Vinny got a NMC along with his deal that was way too long for too much money. He's already 33, on a noticeable decline. That's just silly for a team that had no need for another forward, esp since he's not gonna last more than a year or two in the top 6 because philly has a bunch of good young players that should be getting that time. Esp since Philly is going to have a hell of a time making the playoffs in their new division. (i do gotta update the op with the new playoff seeding)

As for Emery, there is a very definite reason why he came as cheap as he did. At least it is low risk like I said, but people aren't expecting much. Bernier, 2.9/2 is hardly a risk at all and he has high potential. Philly cant afford that because they're filled with horrid contracts and luxury items like Vinny. If you don't sign him, put any of those talented kids in a top 6 role, boom you got him. Bernier's trade wasnt even that much. Backup goalie, marginal player, and a 2nd. And Schneider being available had been out there for a bit because eveyrone knew Lu was untradable. The fact that lots of other teams made offers and Homer didn't know he was avaiable or didnt care speaks volumes about his ability as a gm.

I really dont know why youd reasonbly hope for league average goaltending. For all his faults, Bryz was lightyears better than mason, and def better than emery. He just had a horrid contract. That d, if it got better, it is marginally so, and not because Streit is that good but because most of the guys there are that bad.

I certainly wouldnt call nashvilles signins absurd. they filled needs, and they didnt grossly overpay. they could have used a legit top line forward, but i think by sheer virtue of not paying someone like Clarkson first line money to play like a third liner, they won.

I dont know if id say philly or tortonto was worse, but i do know that toronto at least made the playoffs last year, even if i think they benefited from variance on a short season, and theyre definitely in better position than philly to make again this year. As much as I dont care for Toronto's D, theyre much better than what philly has, and their goaltending situation is much much better.

The new groups are insane. I don't get what they were thinking. I think they just wanted Detroit in the same group as Toronto, and then did what they could to make it work, even if it meant breaking the balance between the west and east, and putting the sunshine state teams in the canadian group.

Anyway, I don't know why I'm complaining. This doesn't concern my team, San José, in fact they will be favored by a smaller western conference, and the new group will grant them many free wins against Edmonton and Calgary.

Also, I still can't stop laughing about Toronto paying 5.25M per year for 7 years for David Clarkson, that's just hilarious. It's especially funny considering it makes his replacement in New Jersey, the old shark Ryane Clowe, at 4.85M times 5 look like a steal, which he wasn't.

Agreed on Lecavalier as a luxury. Perhaps Holmgren/Laviolette still don't trust Couturier when they absolutely should be playing him 16-18 minutes per night.

As to Schneider's availability, I don't think Holmgren is the only one who missed the boat. TOR, TB, NYI all could have offered more than the #9 pick. I would have preferred to get Bernier and take the risk for sure. But having Emery/Mason as a one-year alternative is preferable to Boucher/Leighton! Although I'm sure I'll be eating my words by February the way it always seems to go.
