re: advanced stats:
http://somekindofninja.com/nhl/
awesome site
honestly i dont understand corsi and all that higher level stuff as well as i should. i do find the zone starts and player usage to be pretty fascinating though. rock solid proof to see if a player is getting sheltered minutes, if something like grabovski's decline in production was him sucking or the leafs absolutely burying him in his own end, etc etc. it is the quickest way to figure out who the unsung hero is on the team. like in dubinsky's last year as a blueshirt, his offensive point totals were shitty, but the dude was just a monster at sucking up hard time to open up the game for the top two lines, starting in his own end against top lines quite a lot
i miss prince dubinsky

Let's be clear that I'm obviously talking about jimmyjraynor and his other mouth-breathing accounts.

Well obviously, but you think I am an expert right??!?!

If we set the bar at jjr, then everyone is an expert.

phil even said "play the game with passion and heart" are you saying phil didn't know how to pot a roofer down the line? do you even watch hockey?

all you armchair feather dusters need to learn to watch the play develop because ron didn't and that got him a fast trip through a slow door where, guess, what randy was waiting on the other side with a aint-no-dandy-boy.

Of course replacing Martin Brouder is impossible so I guess thats expected

MAF aint exactly a clutch performer. Tends to suck when it matters actually. Like a more exagerated version of Louongo

Probably. Putin is going full Brezhev over there so he has to 'prove' that the KHL is 'just as good' as the NHL. Plus the Russians dont really have any legitimate defensemen left anyway. It will be just poor old Bob, with a Columbus like defense and a couple of lazy super stars getting smacked around on home ice.

At the top-most level, it can be pretty close.
Canadian hockey:

Other top countries:

Notice how similar the images would look if you cropped off the top 5%.
Point being, Canada could ice 3 teams and have a realistic chance of sweeping the podium, but in a single-elimination format in a sport largely determined by bounces... you need to be have some luck just to medal at all.
