Blizzard just updated their forums with a really cool feature allowing players to modify the default UI while observing. This change is being introduced in HotS, it looks like there is a Patch 2.0 coming that will introduce this.
One of our goals for Heart of the Swarm is to make watching StarCraft II more awesome for the viewers. The new User Interface features in Patch 2.0 are focused on giving tools to the caster, observer and production crews so they can create even more epic broadcast experiences.
We've upgraded these core observer features: Leaderboard entries can be clicked to focus the camera on that unit or structure Added leaderboard tabs for Structures and Upgrades Units under attack now flash white in the minimap, making it easier to see when action is happening off screen Status bars can be set to “team colored” to better differentiate between two armies in combat Status bars can be set to only appear when a unit’s life or energy are not at full All observer UI in 1v1 matches now has the concept of “side”; which side the players appear on can be toggled via hotkey

And there is more info here regarding Observer Interface Mods: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/7593742229#1
This can only be a good thing, it will make tournaments smoother and make the user experience in watching replays much better. But not only can you add in your own interfaces, but you can even change the default UI! You can add new skins, resize any aspect of the UI. I can only think of the possibilities to come. What do you guys think?

apparently the new changes to Antiga and entombed are going live in WoL and HotS today.

I wish you could modify UI you play with.

Nice changes! I also think they should consider allowing people who are observers to have more control over the camera. Being able to smoothly rotate 360 degrees, and zoom out even further should be an option. Of course for players there are obvious reasons against this, as zooming out gives you extra sight, but for viewers it could be better than simply hiding the UI during big engagements.

Wow, glad they are doing this! Definitely unexpected.

Wait, are these fanmade skins or official blizzard ones?

Ye I'd like to know too :D

These things would be something that could be unlocked with the XP-Leveling system...

Hello everyone I have made some experiments with new custom obs UI. Unfortunately, it is not as powerfull and flexible as i would like it to be. For example, it doesn't give us the control over the camera. Though you can hide some frames/add overlay images. if someone is interested you can dowload the result here http://tinypic.com/r/30nf0vt/6 the minimap is 30% larger and ui is transparent. How to install: Extract files Put the "Interfaces" directory into your account's main directory (for example, C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\StarCraft II Beta\Accounts\51247202\1-S2-1-97\) Note: you have to paste the files into the BETA folder: ...Documents\StarCraft II Beta\Accounts... not the ...Documents\StarCraft II\Accounts... because standard SC2 does not currently support custom interfaces Run the game and select the UI in options (Gameplay tab->Observer Interface field). Run a replay.

Anyway, very cool stuff.

I disagree. This is nonsense. UI custom should be downloadable for everyone like any option. This is not a RPG.
