The legendary Sega/AM2 fighting game is coming to consoles soon. Players had wait for quite some time for the FS version to get ported (there's ver. B on PS3 and C on Xbox available right now) but it's finally here. It's going to hit PSN on the 5th of June and XMBL on 6th. It will be priced at $15, with paid DLC available (item unlocks for characters).

If you haven't tried this awesome game before it'll be a great chance to get to it as this price is a true bargain for such product. The game is very good both for beginners and experienced players alike. It's easy to get into as everything there is highly intuitive and moves flow really nicely and even a total newbie should be able to put some strings together. For experienced players there's the joy of exploring a range of unique characters (19 of them), each with a fairly daunting list of moves and even more daunting chain/string possibilities for them. Despite it's easy controls (3 buttons and a stick) the game is considered one of the hardest to master. Apart from huge movelist and combo possibilities there are a lot of technicalities you can dig your teeth into. You have full, unrestricted 3D movement (it's the only game I played so far to have it to this extent, even in Soul Calibur the movement was a bit limited --- you couldn't just walk out of an open arena for example).

Changes from earlier versions for those who played:
- 2 new characters (one new, one returning from previous iteration of the game)
- every single animation re-worked for more smoothness and easier tracking of hit type/height
- complete change to online play, it should be easier now to find opponents and it should be working a lot better (can't say for sure as the game isn't out yet)
- all characters now get 6 different costumes with ~1000 items/character for customization
- stages changed

changes to gameplay

Nice interview with top players about this new release:

A recent Arcadia magazine showed FS as being more popular than SF4 in Japanese arcades. How do you feel about VF’s chances at becoming popular outside of Japan?

Chibita: hmmm... I'm not sure of it’s chances, but I definitely want it to be popular outside Japan. I definitely think it’s an easier version to get into, and probably the most accessible version of VF for beginners.

Is there a specific aspect of the game that can make it stand out amongst the competition? What makes VF stand out?

Fuudo: when playing VF, you’re playing against a person. In 2D games, you’re usually just playing against the other character.

Just watched the finals addded below.. awesome!
I remember plaing Virtua Fighter 2 alot on PC back then but unfortunately fighting games
never got me enough exited to buy a console so I'll rather enjoy finals like these to experience the game
instead of getting frustrated over not hitting combos and getting owned although thats also kinda fun in its own way

Since Pachi made such an awesome thread regarding fighting games and decided to include VF5 there (linking to this very thread) I thought it would be a good idea to add some more content here. I know that the game doesn't have all that much following outside Japan but it remains one of the best fighting games ever in my opinion (and I tried most of them). It's really easy to get into (intuitive controls, just 3 buttons + directions etc.) but really hard to master (which all games should be about).

So, here is a nice tutorial video covering the very basics, just under 3 hours long:

It is a good overview of the very complex mechanics of the game, but it will be useful for other fighting games as well as it covers a lot of tactics/strategies/moves that are universal for most (if not all) fighting systems.

And here is another superb tournament performance by Fuudo (player names are switched in the video for some reason):

Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

I don't watch nor play VF, but a friend of mine religiously plays this, and it seems appropriate to mention that the SEGA Cup happening in SoCal somewhere in April will be pretty big for VF fans.
