This is going to be posted on our site a little later today but I thought I'd start here since a lot of the speculation is coming from r/starcraft

Statement below-

The original agreement between MLG and GSL through the League Exchange Program (LXP) stated that the highest ranked player in the Top 3 from each MLG Pro Circuit event in 2011, including Providence, who did not already have Code S status would be granted Code S status at GSL for one season.

With the recently announced changes to the 2012 GSL season, GSL switched the MLG Providence Code S invite to two spots at the GSL Blizzard Cup. Naniwa was awarded one of these spots. Unfortunately, the change was made without notification to MLG, but it is within GSL's jurisdiction to adjust placement.

quote from reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/ne2jh/mlg_official_statement_as_requested/
same statement now on MLG site: http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/official-mlg-statement-regarding-the-naniwa-code-s-issue

Update: The statement on the MLG site apparently is slightly different. The addition is marked bold.

I find this a bit weird. I found the annoucement of Blizzard Cup by GOM on October 6th.
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=272406
This was way before the annoucement of the 2012 season and the eventual removal of the Code S spot.

At least this is a huge communication mistake.

Clarification: The changes were made before Blizzard Cup (unclear, if before Providence). So removing the Code S spot had nothing to do with the Naniwa incident during Blizzard Cup.

Yeah, quite strange. It's really not acceptable for GSL to change stuff like this around without notifying their partners. Bad business strategy.
That being said, no real harm done. GOM just needs to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

Strange by GOM. When you make a deal you don't change it without the other part at least knowing about it.

Do you see the irony in that?

They didn't lied and they had the right to do so, it was not against the rule. But doing it without telling anyone was seriously unprofessional.

Naniwa got punished, because he was unprofessional. But, what he did was not against the rule.

Weird, is in it?

Foreigners bending over to Korea, sounds similar to NASL. They know people want to watch Koreans play and with that card in their hand, they can get away with things as they please.

We really need to drop this and move on. For anyone that doesn't want to support GOM, so be it. I feel like all of this drama impacts every organization and the fans negatively. The best anyone can do is to avoid situations like this altogether in the future.

Let's just enjoy some SC2!

So basically MLG Providence code S prize was an unintentional bait and switch, made by GOM? wtf.

It's not like code S seed even means what it did when the season started. Before code S was a guaranteed paycheque and hard to ever lose out. Now it's a serious competition and Code A seeds are worth more proportionally; as they can now breach code S much easier.

So yeah, they probably shoulda been more clear all around what was happening with the seeds but it makes sense if you think about it.

Sounds reasonable. Figured things changed once Gom revamped the GSL completely.

Huh? what was the date that slasher tweeted the Code S status wasn't from MLG, they had to know prior to this, if not at the time of the event. This is so unnecessarily messy and it doesn't seem like either side wants to clean it up.

Why exactly should they be doing that? It was GOM's decision to remove naniwa's Code S spot, and MLG have clearly said in there statement that GOM was within their rights to do so. The only organisation that should maybe (depending on which side you're on) be apologizing is GOM.

On topic: The statement itself is pretty much cut and dry..GOM hasn't violated any rules, and MLG seems pretty powerless to revert the change if they wanted to. I mean, sure, there's the whole debate of "MLG should cancel the partnership now" but that's kinda silly to do over an incident such as this. The whole situation is just becoming silly now anyway. There have been countless new threads opened every day since it happened all about the same issue - this doesn't just apply to TL either, it's on reddit aswell. Sure, it's a potentially huge upset...but people need to stop making repeated posts about the same issue.

GOM has lost much of my respect after this whole thing, claims to suspend Naniwa due to 'unprofessionalism' and then pulls something like this? Very bad, very unprofessional

Doubt their intent was bad. Probably just a miss communication.

Nevertheless, massive drama ensuing in 3-2-1....

Yeah right. What's funny is that this is their claim, which is preposterous in the first place. But, the reality is that they decided to change it after they didn't like the results (ie. NaNi in Code S) and that's what makes this such garbage by GOM.

The actions that they show are just as, if not worse, bad as what Naniwa did.

I feel that GOM as an organization is dishonored by there actions and the way they have acted is insulting to us, the paying viewers. They are not professional nor are they fitting to host a tournament like the GSL. I'm saddened by this, just as I was by what Naniwa did since his actions also insulted a lot of people.
