Introduction:

Hi everyone. I'm DioS and I'm Belgian, gamer of the belgian team: Brother's Community team ( http://www.team-bsc.com/ , check this out). I'm Terran and I'm currently mid-top master league ~800 points, top 15. I love macro games & epic battle. I use to play with many drops in my match-ups. The TvZ is my favorite & my best match up because of the gameplay. I have 72% win rate with this build against zerg at the moment. And I win more and more ladder games.

I play a classic marine/tanks/medivacs style & I searched a long time for a good build order to make what I like to do. When I saw MMA playing at MLG Colombus I understood it was what I wanted. He made a super cool build against many Zerg & it is this build that I'll show you.

After a lot of practice I finally take the opportunity to present you a guide of this fast drop style. It is my first contribution to the community on TL, be understanding.

A last thing, my English isn’t really perfect & I'm sorry if there are obvious mistakes in my guide. Please tell me in comments to be corrected.

+ Show Spoiler +
I have to tell you something before you read this post. This build is hard to execute if you are in low leagues. It required a lot of multi-tasking & a comprehensive match-up. Timing is very important in the drops timing. Be careful to execute the build in the good way to have these medivacs before the mutas pops out.
I think this build can easily be used by everyone in top leagues, I mean from Diamond to Grand master.

Overview:
+ Show Spoiler +
The build is made for macro games. You can use it on big maps (the majority of the maps) or in long spawn position. I can't recommend you to do this if you are on fast rush maps like Xel Naga cavern. Big B1 area are cool for drops (Test Bug,..).

Goal:
+ Show Spoiler +
The general idea of the MMA's build is:
⇒ 1 Barrack Reaper fast expand
⇒ Fast double Medivac drop

Your final goal is to get these buildings:
On 2 bases:
3 raxes /w add ons (2 reactors;1tech lab), 1 factory /w tech lab, 1 spatioport /w reactor.
0n 3 bases:
5 raxes /w add ons (5 reactors or 3 reactors;2 tech labs), 2 factory /w tech lab , 1 spatioport /w reactor.

When you have these building you can create a solid marine/tank/medivac play. And the coolest part, dropping!

It looks like this:

Build Order:
+ Show Spoiler +
Here's the opening I make a lot of times. It is good for fast expand because you make a little harass on him & he can't punish your fast expand in the very early game.

Opening:
-10 Supply Depot (at ramp, scout with scv when supply is finished)
-12 Barrack (at ramp)
-13 Gas (send 2 more scv when gas is completed)
-15 OC
-@100% Barrack: (two choices)
•Tech Lab (More pressure before queen pop)
•OR 1 Marine THEN Tech Lab (more safety, less pressure)
-16 Supply Depot (complete wall)
-@100% Tech Lab:
•Reaper x2 (DO NOT lose these reapers, scout, take Xel Naga, kill some drones but never lose them because they are important for defense of the fast expand.)
-Expand between 2 Reapers (you can build your base directly at your natural)

Transition to mid game:

-@300mineral:
•Add 2 Barracks (constant x3 marine production)
-@100gas:
•Combat shield (Stimpack right after Combat Shield)
-Bunker @natural
-@150/100:
•Factory + 2nd gas (take your 3rd gas right when the 2nd is finished)
-@100% Factory:
•Spatioport & reactor on Factory
- Make Eng Bay while building Spatioport
-@100% Spatioport:
•Switch Factory & Spatioport
-Medivac x2
-@100% Eng Bay:
• +1 attack upgrade

Transition to goal plan:

-Build 3rd CC when Medivac pops.
-Add 2 more Barracks (switch 1st Barrack with factory when Stimpack is finished; Make 2 reactors on 2nd & 3rd Barrack; choose to make 2 reactors or tech lab on 4th & 5th barrack. Your choose depends of what the Zerg is doing)
-Start 1st Tank & Tank Siege
-When 3rd base is mining, add 1 more Factory.
-Start Armory & second Eng Bay when +1 attack is half done.

Build order variation: (my own build inspired by MMA)
+ Show Spoiler +
Reaper expand into fast tanks (better in small maps, but can be used in any maps)

• If you don't know your opponent & fear about cheese.
• If you want to change a little bit your build in a BO3 to keep surprise.
• If you think you can't fast expand safety (small maps, your opponent is really aggressive)
• If you are in a bad day (:D)

⇒ Prefer to make tank siege before medivacs in any of these situations. It's an opening I did in the same idea of the MMA's build order. It will be a lot more safety but your drops will be late.
It allowed you to push around 10 minutes while dropping with an only Medivac or just defend your natural while double dropping.

Opening: (the same as the MMA's build order)

-10 Supply Depot (@ramp, scout with scv)
-12 Barrack (@ramp)
-13 Gas (Send 2 more scv when completed)
-15 OC
-@100% Barrack:
• Tech Lab (More pressure)
• OR 1 Marine THEN Tech Lab (Less pressure, more safety)
-16 Supply Depot (complete wall)
-@100% Tech Lab:
•2 Reapers (DO NOT loose these reapers, scout, take Xel Naga, kill some drones but never lost them because they are important for defense of the fast expand.)
-@400mineral(between 2 reapers)
• Command center in your main base.

Transition to mid game:

-@300 mineral:
•Add 2 Barracks
-@150/100(just after your second reaper):
•Switch 1st barrack & build a Factory on the Tech Lab + take your second gas.
-@100% Factory:
•Start Tank + Siege Tank (constant tank production)
-Tech lab on a single Barrack
-Lift your 2nd Command Center to your natural (just after your 1st tank pops out; take one gas).
Note: In case of any all in or cheese by Zerg, stay @ your main & wait for Siege Tank. Take your 3rd gas.
-@100% Tech Lab:
•Stimpack OR Combat Shield
Note: Make Stimpack if you are going to timing push, make Combat Shield if you want to secure faster your natural & dropping instead of pushing.
-After your second Tank, start a Spatioport & make a reactor on a near Barrack.
-Add 2 more barracks & a Eng Bay (Eng Bay before 2 barracks)
@100% Spatioport: switch Barrack & Spatioport, make 2 Medivacs

Now, you have 2 Medivacs, 4 Tanks, ~20 Marines, 2 Reapers & Stimpack is just now finished. If you made the build well, you should be @ ~10minute.

Transition to goal plan:

-Build a 3rd Command Center.
-Add a second Factory.
-Make an Armory & another Eng Bay for upgrades.
-Add reactors (or Tech Lab) on Barrack. Don't make all the reactor in the same time. Build 2 reactors in a time & when they are ready, add 2 reactors on the last Barracks.

Replay:
MMA vs Losira: http://replayfu.com/r/Gc8Jzm
It’s kinda the same as I do.

U Should now have this production: (Never mind the build order you did)

+ Show Spoiler +

2bases:

-Full Marines production (full reactor).
•6 Marines, 1 Tank, 2 Medivacs.
⇒ Against standard play: Zergling/Baneling/Mutas.

OR

4 Marines, 1 Maraudeurs, 1 Tank, 2 Medivacs.
-> against Roaches, Ultras, Infestors.

3bases:
-Full Marines production (full reactor).
•10 Marines, 2 Tanks, 2 Medivacs.
⇒ Against standard play: Zergling/Baneling/Mutas.

OR

6 Marines, 2 Maraudeurs, 2 Tanks, 2 Medivacs.
-> against Roaches, Ultras, Infestors.

Note: You must produce a viking after your 2 first Medivacs, then produce 2 more medivacs; After this point you have to build medivacs ONLY if u have less than 4 medivacs in map, 2 drop, 2 in your main army. Spend your gas into Tanks & upgrades.

How to execute the builds?
+ Show Spoiler +
Early

– Your first 2 Reapers are only there for map control, scout, defense, & small harass. You must never lost them in trade with drones, if you see your Feapers are in trouble, pull back & retake Xel Naga.
Scout: - Hatch first or Sen build? Cheese or not?
- Check for speed upgrade
- Return to see if Zerg is gonna all in you around 4 to 6 minutes.
– When you have Combat Shield ready & some Marines, put the pressure with them. You will probably need to left the Xel Nagas (the Zerg will probably make some Zerglings to retake them), so take the Xels with your Marines. Check for 3rd base.
Let 4 marines in the early bunker to defend of run by.
Note: If you are doing my own build, you can harass with the marines without any upgrades.

Now it depends of the build:

MMA:
– When Medivacs pops out:
Load marines in them & drop the zerg in main & in the Zerg's 3rd base.

DioS: (2 possibilities)
– 1) Push. Move across the map, check Xel Naga & siege your tanks near the B2 of the Zerg. I will not tell you how to push; you probably know already how to do it. Load 8 marines in a dropship & drop the Zerg at main or at the 3rd base if the Zerg took it. Let the second Medivac with your main army.
– 2) Double drop (Read MMA above) let the tanks and the rest of the marines for defense.

Same for the 2 builds:

Now take your 3rd..
And of course, make fast upgrades! You can be 3-3 upgraded around 16-17 minute.

How to play & drop like MMA?
+ Show Spoiler +
You only need good multi-task to play like this. (Obviously you will be weaker :o) )
The heart of this style is to drop while pushing. You load 1 or 2 Medivacs with marines & you drop the Zerg in 2 different locations. When you are doing that, push with your main army in an opposite side.

You want to drop the nearest as possible of the Zerg's bases but without be spotted until your marines are unloaded.

Focus queens & drones or overlord… If an army is coming, pull back, kill some units but don't trade your Marines with his army. Load them & retreat. Find a good spot.

Play with the cliffs, when the Zerg is up, go down with your marines. If he is down, go up
Make damage without losing anything.
Try to single or double drop in same area or in different... Your possibilities are huge
If you know where his army is (attacking your base,..) drop far away from his troops. He can't do anything.
Each time you see a window to drop, just drop.

If the zerg scout your dropship with overlord, unload your marines & kill him. Next time the drop will be effective. Don't forget that you have vikings to kill overlord.

If you loose one Medivac, build another one. & directly re-drop him.

Remembers 3 bases Terran is painful for Zerg. 3 bases against 3 bases is MORE painful. Your best situation is between 10 to 15 minutes. In fac t, you can stay on 3 bases against 3. In this case you are winning. Each time you see Zerg trying to expand, push it.
Constantly drop him. Never let him the opportunity to attack your 3th base. If you feel you are behind in economy, try to harass him & push while taking the gold expand (with PF!).

Why is it important to drop?
+ Show Spoiler +

1) You want to make the biggest damage as you can. In TvZ, killing drones is important to stay with an economical advantage. Terran has better army than zerg but zerg has better economy because of larvas. So you need to make eco-harass & play your race like you have to do!

2) Gain time. You can use drop to gain time for many reason. For example, drop while taking bases are good. It give you the possibility to expand safety.

3) Force the Zerg to make micro and macro mistakes.

4) You can see where the zerg's army is & you can push in the opposite position of his army. It give you scouting advantage & the initiative of the attack.

5) Another think, drop is hard to counter. And a Zerg who has not enough multi-task can panic & makes huggggggge mistakes. You have the opportunity to punish him so hard to do not have a lot of multi task nor be patient...

Response to Zerg specific build order:
+ Show Spoiler +

Sen build:

Scout the expand timing. No expo @4min30 probably says there is something cheesy. Check gas, if he pulls off the drones of the gas, it will probably be an expansion. Take care: he can try to brain you. Make sure he does not retake his gas.

Your Reapers will be less useful in harass. Does not lose them (I know i said it before). Stay @ Xel Naga.

You don't have to dramatically change your build order. Just wall your natural. Don't let zergling overrun your defense. If the Zerg feels there is a window to end the game early, he will make tons of zerglings & try to destroy your expansion. Be careful. Scout!

### replays coming soon ###

Classic hatch first:

Your build is construct to counter or at least stay equal in economy. There is really nothing that can be dangerous for you in early game. In case of tech lab first, you can kill some drones before the queens pop! When they are coming, pull back and don't lose your first Reaper.

Speedling will be late & you will have the map control. He can't scout you & your fast expand will be safe.

### replays coming soon ###

Spanishiwa:

The same as the classic hatch first. But your build will be more powerful. He has only queens, spines crawlers & zergling. Your drops will be super effective in the early game.
You can seriously make drops earlier than the MMA's build because all of his defense are in front of his natural & the main is free for drop.

My classic timing attack with tanks is unfortunately well counter by Spanishiwa... So try to drop all your army in the back of his defense. His main base. Use lift tricks

### replays coming soon ###

7RR:

Don't make second reaper, build Marauders. Place a bunker at your ramp, make your expansion later.
Keep in mind: Roaches hard counter Reapers. Take 3 or 4 SCVs to repair bunker.

If you don't lost anything, you already won the game. Take your expansion & continue the build but produce Maraudeurs on the barrack which has the tech lab.
You don't really need to drop, start Siege Tank faster than medivacs. & timing push him when stim is ready. It will be an easy win.

### replays coming soon ###

Baneling burst one base:

Alright, easy to scout with Reapers. If you think it is going, lift the 2 added Barracks & put them on the ramp.

You can place bunkers, supply depot & make a double wall. Repair the wall. If the wall is broken, you are in trouble! Micro well you marines & use your SCVs to fight. Try to reconstruct the wall.
If your defenses stay in place, you won.

### replays coming soon ###

Baneling burst two bases:

This is the hardest one. You scout will be more difficult with Reaper. Check if he is making tons of zergling or if he is droning.

If your see baneling bust coming, wall with more supply depot, bunkers and other stuff. Split your marines & immediately start tanks & siege tanks, delay drop or you can make hellions to kill banelings. May the force be with you. You have to defend like a lion to counter it. Maybe you will need to retreat to main base, no a huge lost. Try to drop him. All his forces will be in front of your base. Try to stay alive while making a lot of damage with your drops. Don't forget: the zerg made a big investment in his army & it is kinda all in.

### replays coming soon ###

One base mutas:

Laugh. You have Marines & Medivacs, what do you want more? Easy win, split your army in two & place them in your mineral lines.
GG.

###Subject to MAJ ###

Response to composition:

Zergling/baneling/mutas:

Read « How to play & drop like MMA? »

You can also ready this:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=250714

Infestors/zergling/banelings:

Drops will be really powerful. The only thing you have to care is fungal on your marines. Split them to take less damage by it. He has less opportunity to kill your Medivacs & less map control. You Medivac can drop without any problems. U can kill his 3rd base & let him in trouble.

Take care to your Marines, never pack them in a ball =) or it will be a drama.

This part wasn’t easy to write. In theory drops are most powerful but the marines are less powerful. It’s a paradox

Maybe you should start making ghost if they are too much of infestors when your 3rd base is mining. Some Marauders are good to snipe infest too.

DioS vs TuckFrance (Infestors): http://replayfu.com/r/4Pg91d
(Ok I know what you want to say, he is diamond. But it’s just to show you the build.)

Infestors/roaches/ultra:

The same as « infestors/zerglings/banelings ». Just make more marauders & ghost.

This build seems a lot like the build jinro used to do all the time, reactor starport from a 2 rax. Nice write up i will give it a try. Also the "you should have this in production" thats of 2 bases right?

Awesome post I like the way you put the details in.

Although I believe that this will require a decent amount of multitasking ability, something that I'm lacking

The thing about this build is that if you can make multidrop work it's harder for the Z to defend so once you start to learn how to execute it it's so so hard for the zerg to deal with. Especially if he decides to go infestors instead of mutas

I don't like some of your "in response to" sections

Fast Mutas - I don't get how you can simplify this so much. Fast muta normally means before 3rd hatch. It's not designed to kill you but limit movement and that's exactly what you suggesting. Just leaving packs of marines around your base isn't the most ideal situation. Think you need to go deeper in this.

Baneling bust 2 base - With MMAs build you won't get siege tanks with siege out in time. The best bet is to stagger bunkers and get hellions. Target fire down banelings and wall off main. Trying to get siege tanks and splitting marines without bunkers is going to be rough.

Also what on earth is "Spanishiwa/Sen". I assume Spanishiwa means the late gas style but have no clue what sen means

Your why drop section is also a bit iffy. Most of it is talking about forcing a mistake from the Zerg. This isn't really why you want to drop. This is more a byproduct of bad play. A lot of dropping is about getting positional advantages and buying time. Buying time is super important in the early stages of dropping. You need time to get expansion and infrastructure doing. The damage and error is a nice byproduct but not always the main goal. Highlighting them while not talking about the other very important things I think is just a bit silly

Your build:

Overall I actually don't like this build. MMAs build was centered around gaining that early map control and exerting that presence into mid game to allow you to pressure and gain third. By going so early to siege tanks you basically committing to some kind of timing push but you don't outline doing that push. You have no map presence after your initial reapers and have no plans to gain that back. The zerg is free to take a third and drone up heavy then switch to hardcore army production to stop the timing you need to hit but you don't do it. So it's really confusing. I'll have to look at the replays of your variant to really get more of a feel for it. Just reading it doesn't sit well with me

@Numy:
Fast mutas:
You don't understood what I said. It's my fault. I meant "one base mutas". It's edited.

Baneling burst 2 base:
In fact in MMA's classic build you don't have these tanks. You have to wall of with bunker & supply + other stuff.

For Spanishiwa:
Because his defense is in front of his b2, has no in base defense. It's why dropping is good.

For the drop section. I will edit it. Thank you.

For my build:
You can also gain map control with your marines while defending with tanks. He can't take is 3rd easily as you said. You can drop around 10-12 and punish it. You can also push with tanks.

I don't understand what you are saying here. The build that OP outline specifically said it focused around a double Medivac drop before Mutas. As a Zerg player, this is incredibly difficult to deal with without Mutalisks. You can easily split up your drops at two different bases, doing enough damage where an early third base by a Zerg is undesirable.

It makes complete sense that if the Zerg goes super fast Mutas, you can't drop. But the Zerg will likely not have the best economy either so you can already gain an advantage by defending the initial Mutalisk harassment and expanding. The point of the build (as how it differs from a standard Tank/Marine) is that it's designed to wear the Zerg down for that mid-game 2 base push or the 3-base late game push.

I've been having some problems myself with fast mutas: they pop around the time my 2 medivacs are going to drop. If you see fast muta, u just dont drop i guess? And get faster/more tanks instead?

Scrubs- Like the guide says, you need to do your best to keep your reapers alive. If you do then you should hop back into his base just before your factory finishes (~6-7 minutes) to check his lair timing, (you'll have to scan if you don't keep the reaper alive, but then your'e screwed if he just made the lair at the natural) and you need to see when his third goes up (I usually try to keep a marine/scv there). If he takes a super fast third or has a late lair, then go for the reactor on the factory and go with the double drop. If he has quick lair and you SEE the infestation pit, you can still go for the drop, you just have to be attentive to them to try and make sure you lift up and move away before the infestors can fungle you. If he stays on two base, and has a fast lair, then get a techlab on the factory and keep the starport naked, and go for a ~9-30 min push jsut before his mutas pop. If he goes for BOTH a super fast lair, and a fast third, then you can most likely just 'go fucking kill him'.

Hope this helps

Great response by tjd2191.

I don't have any problem with fast mutas but it's sure drops must be make carefully.
