Nub friendly Masters Aproved Protoss Hotkey set up:
Hi every one this is my first guide so please be nice… Plus its finals week and my brain hurts from Ochem…
Overview: + Show Spoiler + So a few weeks ago my roommate got SC2. Being a total num at RTs he was constantly forgetting to build workers and units… He dint really know how to use hotkeys that well and was clicking to do everything. Looking back to when I first started playing it was really hard to learn the hot keys and micro and macro at the same time. Together we came up with a hotkey set up that work really well and can be mastered very quickly. The idea behind this set up is to be able control micro and macro without moving your keyboard hand position. We will be reassigning the Keys ~. R. W. T. and CAPS LOCK, we will also reassign some unit spells and upgrades to function like grid using the D.F.G keys, in addition we will change hot keys of the most frequently produced units to E.
Step by step: Skip. If you’re familiar with how to configure your own hotkeys.
+ Show Spoiler + Log in to b-net- - > Esc key- - > Hotkeys- - > - On the top left hand side of this menu you will see [select profiles]. Click on the + sign underneath the down arrow. This will allow you make a hokey template. - Then click on the race you want to config… the rest is self explanatory but feel free to ask questions if you get stuck…
The Template config: Picture is worth a thousand words.
+ Show Spoiler +
How to use:
+ Show Spoiler +Hot key your nexus to R. Upgrade buildings will also go on this hotkey. Use the TAB and CAPs to cycle upgrades. R and E really close makes it really easy to keep making probes… and since you have all your upgrades showing… every time you make probes you will be able see when things are done.. ![[image loading]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b97/kasun/Screenshot2011-03-1523_02_10.jpg) Hotkey your Gateways, Stargates, and Robos to W. You will lose automatically W- getting keyed to warp gates but if you hotkey your gateways manually it will function the same way…. Most protoss are use to spamming W anyways so its really nice to be able to Tab and hit E to make voids or colossus. ![[image loading]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b97/kasun/Screenshot2011-03-1523_00_53.jpg) Hot key your main army to Q - - A is right undernigh Q so it’s really nice to just Q- ->A . Hot key Sentries to T, insta forcefeilds are lot easier that way T- -> F.. Hot key a worker to 4 you can 4 - - > B - - > E [don’t get supply blocked nub ] ;] . I put my observer on ~ cause I always lose it on the mini map… but you have 5 other hotkeys to do whatever you like with.. 1-5.. easy to reach and most of you are likely used to hitting 5 for production buildings or army anyway.. ![[image loading]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b97/kasun/Untitled.jpg)

Camera Locations:
+ Show Spoiler +So been trying figure out the best rebinds for this. This is what Iv come up with. Change build Nexus to D. Change build Cybercore to S. Rebind set rally point anything (I never used that hot key ever... why would you when you can just click to set) Location gets 1 bound to N. Location 2 bound to Y. Bind the middle mouse button [Mouse Wheel Click] to 3. Location 4 to U. Location 5 to J. The logic: as to why this makes sense. (skip..its boring) + Show Spoiler + Firstly.Your hand and fingers know where N and Y are because you always build a core and you almost always build an expo. We can exploit this by just reassign N and Y to camera. Its just a cool way to program our brain into using camera locations when before it was too lazy to think about it. Secondly. You only build one core and only a few Nexus a game, so its not like you have to be super fast at building them. Bottom line you will still be good at Starcraft while you make the changes to use S. and D.
Mouse wheel button bind is great because you can bind Location 3 to your warp in location... Hit Shift-->W-->Wheel click-->S-->Click Click Click..
U and J little harder to get used to but since they are near Y and N you should be able find it with out looking at the keyboard..
But honestly IMHO you only need 3 camera location in most games...
Base camera and Builder probe. + Show Spoiler + Change probe hotkeys: Build building hotkey from B to F. Build advanced buildings hotkey from V to D.
Hot key base camera to V. Hot key your Builder (previously cntl group 4) worker to B.
VOD + Show Spoiler +
Any ways… hope you guys will like this set up.. I will try to figure out a way to make a copy template of my file available for you guys to download… anyone know a free file hosting site? Let me know what you think about this set up… any ways can’t wait till my finals are over this Sat so I can do epic SC2 marathons..
[i] *edit: Notepad version added. *edit 2: Added Camera Shortcuts *edit 3: Added Base cam and Worker probe hotkeys. *edit 4: Added VOD *edit 5: added better VOD *Final Edit: added Annotations to the Vod.

Hmm, very interesting. I havent really played around with hotkeys yet, but i like your setup. I might keep my army units on numbered hotkeys though, but having the Nexus on R, and all the production units on W, sounds nice
|
you can upload your own hotkeys you don't need to put up screen shots.
on win XP for me it is: C:/Documents and Settings/USER/My Documents/SC2/Accounts/RANDOM NUMBERS/Hotkeys
you can open the .SC2hotkeys in notepad and edit them that way or copy and paste, whatever you want to do, etc.
I have my own set of hotkeys as well, they revolve around WASD, 1234, never going past the T,G and B key so it's all localized around my left hand, even 7,8,9,0 are f1,f2,f3,f4. Also the only things in this file are settings that have been changed, things that aren't listed are default, that's just how it works for b.net. All of settings below are for all races, not just protoss (as this thread is directed towards protoss). On a side note I showed my friend, who recently got SC2, my hotkey set up and he loves it, maybe you will to

you may notice there are a lot of hotkeys that don't make sense, well that's because i played the BW mod and they screw with your hotkeys. Don't worry though, my hotkeys never had to be rebound after playing BW. A tip, if you play the BW mod and then go to hotkeys, make a new profile and edit those hotkeys as they will be the format of BW with the BW units, buildings, etc.

Thanks emc. just updated.

Very nice read, thank you!
Some additional thoughts:
- I use one additional mouse button for binding my camera position to where my warp pylon is and another for warpgates. So when I need to summon I just click them both fast (and ofc I set rally points of other producing buildings to the same place) - Hold position and patrol are quite far from 1 or Q. Consider rebinding these (another option is to use 3, 4, ... for army) - Build Immortal (I), build interceptor, etc are good candidates for rebinding - I use F1-F7 for camera positions 1-7. I use these for my main/expos (for easy chronoboosting and other things mentioned in Day9's newbie tuesday about mechanics). - I also use middle mouse button for "select idle worker"

-I have razer naga with 16 buttons on the mouse.. but I use it for graphic design stuff.. what Your talking about sound interesting.. -oh yea good point with hold position but I maybe I can rebind it.. I rarely ever use it.. I use stop instead... but im sure top top level players use hold position Frequently -Regarding my factory units.. I have them on A.D.S.E- observer, prism, Immortal, and colls. respectively. Stargate is set up the same way. A,E.S. with voidrays being E. -its really hard for me to reach F keys... I haven't trained my self to use them well yet..

Thanks a lot for the guide. I'm just getting back into the game after a long time away and am using your keys as a solid framework.

I don't get it. Why not to use the numbers (1-6)? I don't have to move my hand at all. Just 4-e 6-t and so on.

The idea is that it is annoying to use 6,7,8,9,0 as hotkeys so you rebind them as more easily accessible keys on the left side of the keyboard. Now Q, W, R are your main keys with 1,2,3,4,5, being your "do what you want" keys instead of 1,2,3,4 being your main keys and 6,7,8,9 being the alternate ones.
Keeping everything closer together is helpful!

was watching Artosis. think he is using something close to this build.
|
Lol that's pretty clever actually.
What's Warp Gates set to though?
|
Whoa, this will take a lot of time and practice to adapt into. Great idea though! I hope it is not as irritating as when trying to learn HuK's hotkeys of 0 Nexii and P for probe. Quit in 5 minutes lol.
|
All I have different from default is Q is now a control group as well as ~. Robotics always goes on Q, stargate always on 4, Nexus' on 5, zealot/sentry/immortal/colossus 1, stalkers 2, casters/air 3, Observer on ~ (extras are unbound).
My thumb mouse button is base cam so ive trained myself during macro to just grab the worker, hit B, E for pylon, place it down somewhere, hit thumb button, click mineral patch. I think day9 teaches something similar but with camera saves. I don't use camera saves as I dont find the time it saves, if any, as impactful at all when you're fast at everything else.
Masters btw, don't need anything fancy to be in masters and most progamers dont do all this fancy shit either

The thought of using "QQ A Move" into winning in PvZ's sounds hilarious lol.

Pretty cool application of putting w as a control group with warpgates. For me, its 5, but I'm seriously considering switching over.
w ssss tab c for colossus + stalkers in an attack feels a lot better. We already want to have gateways on a hotkey *somewhere* in order to not miss new gateways to transform to warpgates!
*Edit* And good luck OChem, aced that crap 5 years ago with notecards and a little ingenuity!

You are hitting W then S with middle finger, then Tab with your ring finger then C with your index.
Might be easier if you changed Tab and Capslock around. Unless you have some super long Pinky finger or something

I don't see what's wrong with that, having your entire army on one control group is not the same thing as "one control group syndrome" in case you've forgotten you still have 1-5 on this system to individually assign units.
i have an actual question to this post, you changed things like stalker blink to F but that doesn't appear to conflict with anything, is that just a preference?

He is just poking fun. People tend to "QQ" about the Protoss deathball, and having your entire Deathball as Q..well yeah, you get the picture

I changed Coll and voids to E.. so you don't have find C or what ever the hotkey voids was ( this feels so natural I don't know if I could ever go back to standard). I changed all spell skills to F D and G. Much easier after your brain adjust to. F being the skill being used to most. So if you want to blink I hit 3-->F click.. Force fields are easy too with just T-->F click.. Storms are chill too with 2-F feedback 2-D. Put Your upgrades on DGF and after a while your fingers will just do the actions on their own. R-tab-D-F I just upgrades ground weapons and amour on my forges..
You can do more with less APM with this build... Incidentally my APMs are doubled now than when I was using slandered..
I bound Warpgate warp-in to K just to see the cool down but I hardly ever look at the cool down why not right.. I hardly ever look at the cool downs cause im always taping W anyway..
Put your whole army on Q is really good actually... Then you need to separate them also... like put Zealots on Q and 1 sentries on Q and T.. helps when you need to move your whole army at once and then you can use battle micro individually too.
