I was debating something with malathion today and realized that we were both throwing around a term that neither of us had a clear definition of: "management style." What exactly does this term refer to? Who are paradigmatic management style players and why? Who are the opposite and why?

Koreans usually call macro games "management" and gay rushes "strategic play".
And all is illuminated.

Reminded me of the Savior interview: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=98685

He changed the paradigms of ZvT and ZvP, becoming famous as a perfect "management style" zerg. (Translator's note: "Management" is a rough translation of a term widely used in Korea to describe a style of play. It is more defensive than aggressive, more passive than active, more strategic than tactical. At its best, it means a very fluid and flexible style.)

Management style zerg requires much more finesse in its play. You have to defend very well. Zerg isn't naturally a good race for defense, which is what makes it so difficult. Also, multi-tasking is extremely important. In general, if you don't excel at everything, you can't do well using management style zerg. But if you can play management style zerg perfectly, then you can play with an aura of invincibility, and can make your opponents feel pressure from your mere presense.

Hope that helped.

A management style is a somewhat vague umbrella term people use to describe macro players such as Savior and Flash. It refers to attempting to control the game flow through intelligent expansion and harass timings that will prevent your opponent from being able to mess with your game plan, as your game plan already encompasses counters to all potential early and mid game threats. A late game management style is intelligent use of your resources and a view of economies, for example those crazy hanbang TvP and TvZ attacks:

Fantasy/Jaedong on Outsider, when Fantasy is dominated all game then does a 12 tank han bang with no economy to kill Jaedongs only 2 bases and be left with a stronger army. Or that Iris/Bisu game on Byzantium where Iris barely holds on and manages to kill Bisus only 2 remaining bases while maintaining 1 base himself.

So it basically refers, in almost all cases, to trying to get to the late game and then use superior resource management, macro, late game decision making and big army control to win.

EDIT: generally it requires absurd multi-tasking (particularly in ZvT) to play as effectively as an aggressive style.

A management style means that your aim is to keep growing and get a better position in the late game than the opponent, as opposed to aiming for a single strike to win like a hydra break or guardian rush.

Gorush was the original management zerg, and Savior evolved the style into modern day zerg play. Julyzerg is the opposiit, as well as Yellow, although he talked about changing his style at some point so he might have been more macro based way back.

Today, management style is the norm, and everything else is the exception so the term somewhat lost its meaning.

Thanks for the answers. It seems really easy to understand why Flash is a management player and why savior is known for management zvt. But as all protoss matchups almost always incorporate some form of harass or timing attack, is there such a thing as a management toss?

Protoss max faster than the other races, when performing most strategies. They also don't have the Zerg mobility to defend many bases (or the macro ability to build a large number of fighting units at the last minute), or the Terran defensive power that lets them split defense without getting reamed. I don't see a way to expand with Protoss without taking map control (so that your path to defend is shorter than the opponent's to attack, and to delay Terran pushes) which generally entails maintaining a large ground army off your first two or three bases... unless you're relying on shuttle (or arbiter?) play and possibly air units.
My strategy is to fork people.

Savior in an interview talked about "management" style Zergs, i.e., himself in his prime, versus "aggressive" style Zergs such as Jaedong, with the main difference being that management style led to a lot more reactive play, based on the opponent. If you watch Day9's on-demand VOD about Hogil vs Mind he actually explains the difference quite well, showing that management style Zergs are not very aggressive until late-game.
