So you're imagining beginning of the story Kurisu having romantic feelings for Okarin like that when they just met and well, that's just a bit strange to me (but then, she is a blatant tsundere so what the fuck do i know) Speaking of tsundere the anime seems to spam this fact OVER and OVER again to the point where it makes no sense. Same thing with her being a 2channeler or whatever. It's so stuffed down people's throats that it's weird. I think maybe the anime didn't get the psyche stuff down correct. Okarin "breaking" down would have been better for the series perhaps but what I saw was Okarin getting more and more focused as he goes through the d-mails. Reading your analysis though I think it's a bit weird he never started thinking for more than Mayuri. I mean, the point is that they are going towards the dystopia future -- why doesn't he ever start using that as a justification? Why doesn't any of the characters (especially Kurisu, who would be smart enough to figure it out) or any other characters? With regards to Kurisu's suspension of belief, that's largely because he strays further and further from when Kurisu comes up with the time leap machine - when she knows it's possible, she believes it (the possibility of such happenings cross her mind obviously), but when she doesn't it's a lot harder, and so he and she need to use more of a private trick to convince herself. Okabe in particular is pretty ingenious; I guess the anime didn't convey it well but in the VN it was pretty clear he acts retarded but is incredibly smart in his own right (obviously not the genius that Kurisu is but he's pretty damn smart). A lot of the bone-headed stuff he ends up doing is because he panics or is stressed out of his mind that he does something rash. I never got the impression during the VN that anything he did was inordinately stupid, with the except of lack of foresight, which certainly plagued him, but you could also chalk that up to pure overexcitement (upon finding the time machine) and then a naive hope that he didn't need to go further (or specifically, by the time he undid the first one he more-or-less knew he'd have to keep going back, he just didn't know until when, but after the second DMail he knew he'd have to undo everything... the one he completely forgot about was the initial one for Kurisu's death). He relies on her because he needs someone else to ponder time travel theory with, and obviously the one he initially confides in (Suzu) is gone. Also, sending back a repair mail isn't as easy as it may seem when it came to Moeka, who was the grand finale of sorts, so he deffo relied on her more clear mind to figure something out (though it didn't really matter since he ended up relying on luck and strength lol). Finally, she's the one that created the time leap machine, and he didn't know how exactly it worked etc., so that factored in too. As for their relationship, hrmz. It was implied that Kurisu simply found him a love at first sight (why else would you go hunt down a random guy that you met? O_o and then cancel your damn flight home in order to watch him? I mean yeah the time machine ended up being a big factor but it doesn't change the fact that she completely altered her future plans to find him and stick with him) and slowly developed respect and more realistic love as time went on. It's certainly debatable to what extent Kurisu was actually in love with him, as she's social awkward, but by the time the decision rolls around (which is like 2? weeks from their initial meeting) she's comfortable enough with him that she certainly considers him at least a friend. Her tsundere-ness was one of the things I didn't really like that much, but people say she's the perfect tsundere and stuff, so I dunno. Not gonna touch on that. It was kinda forced in the VN too and was one of the things I argued with Eca about. And as I slightly mentioned, he did think about stuff other than Mayuri. But in the end he simply prioritizes Mayuri over everything else, because of his attachment to her. He refuses to use other stuff as justification because he's trying to be honest with his priorities (to a fault I guess, I mean he forcefully takes responsibility for killing Akiha's father and such), and trying to repent and atone for his selfishness as much as possible. It's why in the epilogue when Suzu comes in he shouts WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME? I KILLED THE GIRL I LOVE TO SAVE YOUR GODDAMN WORLD. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME!? Part of his tragedy (prior to the epilogue) is that obviously as time goes on, he appreciates Mayuri's survival less and less. Along with his breakdown in psyche you definitely notice that he begins to chant saving Mayuri more as a self-hypnotizing sort of mantra than anything else. He clutches to that goal because it's the only thing he has going for him, and he begins to be willing to sacrifice everything for his goal. In that sense he becomes more "focused," but that focus is because he's so fucked up and worn down that he doesn't want to completely break apart. | ||

Apparently its one of the better done ones. Says something about VN adaptations I guess (its difficult). I guess I'll leave it as "there's way worse". ...reminds me of that research paper I wrote on it (VN adaptation)... | ||

alot of what hes talking about translated reasonably well, despite the confines of the medium, hence people liking it so no the anime didnt really suck at all, theres alot of anime sucks going on elsewhere though. The majority of the tropes and motifs were conveyed well enough for me atleast. Its not like you didnt "get" anything as such. Maybe because I marathoned it and it was easier to connect but either way it isnt particularly lacking. edit : Also all I can remember well about seto no hanayome is that its basically Aoi yori aoshi cept with mermaids and Masaaaa -san.. | ||
